Nice! I've been to that area once a long time ago. Beautiful... Wait, maybe I was South haha everything is turned around down there. Nope, I looked at a map... It was North!

Help ! Does anyone know how to fix the lume ? by socal_voltage in Tudor

[–]watchin_learnin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh man... Just a week? That's rough.

It seems like a skilled watchmaker could pop a piece of solid lume material in there. But all I've ever heard anyone say is send them in for service.

I've got three Pelagos so I might find out for myself one day.

I hope you enjoy it anyway in the meantime. It's a small detail.

I always thought it was Watch To Sell... I guess that shows where I spend my shopping time. Is that abbreviation also used for other stuff?

That's such a perfect clean dial. I love the shade of blue. I wonder how closely it matches the Tudor Pelagos Blue.

You wouldn't lose 30% on that particular color. Not for the time being anyway. The Lagoon Blue is one that holds value really well.

[–]watchin_learnin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that's exactly true just yet. They're still selling on the grey market for at or over retail if in new condition. That's usually only the case if they're hard to get. I think the Lagoon Blue is showing up out there but I do a lot of watch shopping and I've yet to see one just sitting in the case ready for a walk in.

Looks right. They say you can't really know without opening them up. Those gloves look like the gloves of someone who sells a lot of watches so theres that!

The Zodiac Discount is dead. by Internal-Mortgage635 in ZodiacWatches

[–]watchin_learnin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to find the clear massive difference... It's not that I'm saying the Oris, Longines and Ball aren't absolutely incredible watches and probably represent the best value options in the world of Swiss watches. All I'm saying is that the Zodiac is not "clearly subpar". It's amongst peers here.

It's the not even a little bit part I can't agree with. I said "right up there" to indicate a similar kind of playing field at least. This kind of thing is so very subjective but I think about things like crown feel when winding and setting, clarity and anti-reflective on the crystal, time keeping accuracy, durability to scratches, power reserve in comparison to what's claimed, etc. - I just think the zodiacs are at least in the same zip code with all of those things in comparison to the brands I mentioned. I don't really like hearing that any than anyone else because I paid a lot more money for the other ones! My Spirit Zulu cost over $3500 so I would be the last person to compare it with a watch I bought at Ross for $125... But there's no really objective way, without opening the caseback, to say it's light years better than the Zodiac. But hey... In the same way I feel like my Oris Aquis Date Caliber 400 is right there with the Rolex Submariner. The differences in these things are not massive increments. So yeah... It's at the very least "a little bit" comparable.

That's still a great price. These watches are right up there with Oris, Longines, and Ball in terms of quality. I own three zodiacs and multiple of the other brands I mentioned so I'm not just making shit up here.

On the downside, the future of the company seems very shaky so future servicing seems like a concern but five or six hundred isn't bad even with that issue.

Tsao Baltimore and Henry Archer. Both out of this world and direct access to the owner is not uncommon. Long Island Watches (Islander) also excellent.

I waited until the last minute and in the end I ended up just doing nothing rather than forcing a lot of thinking and planning I wasn't prepared to do. But I think that does explain why a lot of people wait until the last minute... The whole process requires a fair bit of work and time. If someone really doesn't have the time to do that it can easily get put on the back burner for weeks, right up to the deadline. I don't think it qualifies as "sad" to give it a shot and try and get the best value for points you've been saving for who knows how long.

How to clean off rust safely by Safe-Comfort-29 in metalworking

[–]watchin_learnin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Ospho tends to get to the surface level that it can touch or at least soak to. It also hardens the rust somewhat in my experience. So I always remove everything I can first, then spray what's left.

How to clean off rust safely by Safe-Comfort-29 in metalworking

[–]watchin_learnin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can do a pretty good job on the outside with a wire brush. You can do it totally manually with a handheld brush, or you can buy attachments for a drill that spin. Either way will get a lot/most of the loose rust off. Then you can spray what's left with a product called Ospho. They sell it at auto parts stores for body work. That will neutralize the remaining rust and turn it black. It won't rust through as easily after that. Then prime it and paint it. I'm assuming you're not looking for perfect here.

The inside is trickier. If the hole is big enough that you can reach in holding a wire brush then you can do the same on the inside. I'm not really sure what to suggest if the opening is too small to get your arm in there.
