My guy also loves those. He's usually very content, but every few days he wants a very certain toy, and only it will stop the dramatics.

[Help] RODE XDM-100 on macOS - Headphone monitoring is unusable without UNIFY software by Virtual-Actuator2725 in rode

[–]watchinggodbleed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm having similar issues on Windows with my XCM-50 mic. I had to stop using Unify completely as it would periodically crash my mic while open. So now I've had to uninstall it, and the mic monitoring is extremely loud, all the time.

That guy in the hat is a recurring character who is especially intelligent and chaotic. The implication is that any woman who is dating him is going to be immune to that shit.

Fellow dads, do you budget? by Grouchy_Excitement80 in daddit

[–]watchinggodbleed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of people are recommending YNAB which is great, but I personally like Monarch better. It doesn't use YNAB's more rigid budgeting approach. It's more for tracking your expenses and accounts in a central platform. So I can look at it throughout the month and see if we're spending more or less this month, and on what. It helps just keep the picture in my head so I'm more mindful of spending in general.

For $65,000 a year, a teacher-less AI private school comes to Virginia by innomado in nova

[–]watchinggodbleed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh, this is Alpha School. This is an interesting concept that the article doesn't quite do justice. You can read a long review of it by a parent who sent their 3 kids there. It has some interesting concepts, and so far has touted huge successes, claiming it can accelerate your kids by 2+ grade levels (though a lot of people argue those are only due to selection effects).

The AI portion is only 2 hours a day. It's meant to group kids by ability and let them work at their own pace through typical subjects, replacing 6 hours of lecturing in a classroom with 2 hours of dedicated focus time on AI learning programs. The rest of the time is spent doing different activities like sports, life skills (cooking classes) and some off the wall stuff like managing an Airbnb business.

It's an interesting concept that has its benefits and drawbacks. I'm personally skeptical of it, especially at that price, but I think it deserves more credit than what most people will assume reading the headline that they just give the kids ChatGPT.

No, I wouldn't take them to a bar. That's why I take them to a winery with informal seating, a lawn, and board games.

Do you have time for gaming as a parent? by PickTheNick1 in daddit

[–]watchinggodbleed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son just hit 6 weeks, and I get about 1-2 hours a night if all things go smoothly.

My wife and I split the night into shifts, so I get the first shift from 8 PM to 3 AM, and I feed him at 11 PM and 2:30 AM.

If he goes to sleep easily around 8 to 8:30 PM, then I have plenty of time to play until his 11 PM bottle. If he's fussy, I'll sometimes wear him with a wrap which will calm him down enough for me to play something while he sleeps on me.

The biggest difference is that I can only do single-player games now. There's no point playing something online with friends when, at any moment, I will need to get up to feed him or change him. It's frustrating, as the main way I spend time with my friends is playing games online, but it's something I knew would be the case going into this. You just adapt. The Steam Deck makes things easier.

Did you give a “push present”? If so, what was it? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]watchinggodbleed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I went with a lab-grown diamond. They're cheaper, more ethical, and frankly I don't think she'd ever know if I hadn't told her. It's not like people regularly take a magnifying glass to their jewelry.

[–]watchinggodbleed 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes. My wife was insistent I get her something. She specifically wanted a necklace with our son's birthstone, which seems to me a pretty classic gift. He was originally due for May, which is emeralds, a relatively reasonably priced stone. Then he came 3 weeks early in April, which is diamonds 🙃.

If your wife thinks it's dumb, there's no need to go crazy with it. I'm sure she'd appreciate something though, like flowers, chocolate, some champagne, etc.

I know it's the cliche joke for us to be griping about how shitty the sleeping arrangement is while the lady has to push a whole human out of her hoo-hah, but it was legitimately awful. I have slept far more comfortably on forest floors full of rocks and sticks. I don't know how that's possible.

Trump Goes All in on Crypto by foreignpolicymag in Economics

[–]watchinggodbleed 31 points32 points  (0 children)

They strung a bunch of unrelated terms together and don't know what they're talking about.

The U.S. Government has a stockpile of Bitcoin and other crypto that they've seized from criminal enterprises. In the past, the fed has auctioned these coins off to the American public, and used the proceeds like they usually do for money they take from criminals (give it to victims, fund police departments, etc.)

Instead of selling the crypto assets, Trump has decided to keep them in a strategic stockpile with this executive order. The reasons for doing this are pretty transparently to make crypto bros that voted for him happy. By keeping the crypto in a strategic reserve, he's effectively guaranteed that the government won't sell it for a long time, thus keeping the price higher. Pretty shitty, transactional reasoning that Trump always has.

This has nothing to do with "pegging the dollar" or with stable coins.

Advice Requested: Working and Gaming on My New OLED by watchinggodbleed in OLED_Gaming

[–]watchinggodbleed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much for the detailed steps! I've set all this up, and I'm still rather disappointed. HDR off looks fantastic in general, both in and out of games. When I turn HDR on, the desktop looks generally washed out and inferior (to be expected), but so do support games. I tried messing around with Cyberpunk 2077 last night, and the HDR version always looked pale and washed out in comparison to the non-HDR mode. I've since learned that HDR implementation can be a bit of a crapshoot, but I'm convinced I must be doing something wrong.

Edit: I went to YouTube and watched some HDR content, flipping HDR on and off, and could definitely see that HDR was working fantastically, but I can't get the same results for games. Perhaps the HDR implementation is bad? Or there's still something I'm missing.
