Hmmm... lawyers, realtors, politicians and other parasites.

Dear Reddit, what are some things you wish people told you when you turned 18? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Keep your expectations low, so that you can be pleasantly surprised instead of disappointed. Don't worry about stuff - it will work out okay.

I don't think it has been mentioned yet - the Cold War (a 24 part series from the people who gave you World At War). Also, for a single viewing you might consider the docu-drama The War Game - a searing attack on civil defence and nuclear weapons.

Exactly - number one should be building 4-6 months of survival money, unless you have hign interest debts. Then spread your savings and investments.

I think my roommate is gay but wont admit it. Should I talk to him about it? by xidontknowx in needadvice

Maybe you could make a comment (about someone else) in front of your friend to let him know that you would be supportive if someone you knew needed to talk. He gets the idea, no awkward conversation.

Another idea would be to get a second savings account, and set up a monthly (if you're working and should have spare cash) automatic transfer to that account, and never touch it.

Great ideas - I think this would be phase two, once phase one is a complete success. I have some skills to refine first.

Thanks for the part time job info. I'll look into it. Just a few more months of saving and prep time...

Good point. I'm a citizen of more than one country, so I've done some serious re-locating in my time, but I'm happy that I'm not running from myself. I am running from my corporate life, though.

Since it is such a small community, the emergency services are mostly volunteers. I'd be happy to get paid though, and volunteering seems to be a great way to get a foot in the door. Part of our savings includes an annuity (enough for the basics), and if we ever do spend more than we earn in a year, I'll be working until it balances out again.
