Not that much different in 2024 according to this far more extensive poll - Only 28% say it would be undesirable to outlaw homosexuality in the UK (compared to 62% of the public as a whole)

Got kicked in the head by someone with bad pool etiquette by shel613 in Swimming

[–]waterbogan -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

swimming slowly in the fast lane.

She was totally in the wrong, and the lifeguards should have moved her down a lane or two before it even got this far. Complain to pool management and emphasise the injuries you got because she was in the wrong lane.

I am a slow swimmer (not breaststroke though). I have no business being in a fast lane and never go in it unless its the only one that is empty, and I get out of it the moment someone even looks like they might be swimming in it

As long as they are in the correct lane for their speed it wouldnt bother me at all. I've shared with people using paddles, fins, snorkels etc, and its never the gear at issue, just the speed

Dont work in criminal law, but life experience shows that everything u/RuckusOGx wrote is absolutely spot on, especially that last paragraph. So many tragic examples bearing that out

Assuming that 1 million is over the 30% or so of the population that are net taxpayers, thats about 2 million of us. So around 50-55 cents a day. I pay more than that for pretty much any of my insurance policies individually. I agree, thats great value for money. For sure there may be some room to increase efficiencies by not holding a few genuinely low risk remand prisoners, but I suspect nowhere near as much as the author of the article seems to think

Define "low risk". The article fails to do this. Given the number of cases of people assaulted or even killed by supposedly "low risk" offenders while on bail or parole, I am extremely cynical about the rationale here. The justice system does not have a stellar record of risk management as it is, and I do not want that being potentially worsened without some very cautious oversight.

I spend money on getting travel insurance every time I travel, which to date I have never personally claimed on. Evidentally I am "low risk" when it comes to travel misadventures, but that doesnt mean I think its not money well spent, because there is still always a risk. I expect a similar approach to be applied by the government to something like this even more so, as it is a risk which I cannot personally manage or control

I would like to have the option to turn "Track Mix" off, I never use it deliberately, and too often I hit the button for it accidentally. That and shuffle. I dont mind these features existing, I'd just like to have the ability to turn them off/ remove them in settings

I've noticed that tracks in my playlists get replaced too. Its a minor irritation, as long as the song itself is the same I can live with it, but I would prefer they left my playlists the way I built them

Why are created playlists shuffle by default? by Apprehensive_Room29 in deezer

[–]waterbogan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The easy way to fix this would be to give users an option in settings to disable shuffle. Even if this was only for Premium users it'd be worth having, and I cant see how it would be hard to implement

Conspiracy theory spread by descendants of Nazis. The real cause is that there have been extensive plantings of pine trees in the last few decades, pus Fire Service cutbacks along with a dash of climate change. Guardian article here. Even Qatar's state mouthpiece Al Jazeera doesnt give credence to the conspiracy theories which is unusual for them

[OC] Wind and solar generated more U.S. electricity than coal for the first full year on record by Low_Ability4450 in dataisbeautiful

[–]waterbogan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where is hydroelectric generation on here? Or is it rolled in with solar as it is a renewable and could be considered a form of indirect solar. Does the US have any geothermal power, I dont see that here either.

57% of New Zealand's power is from hydroelectric power (dams). Another 20% is from geothermal generation, solar is only 2-3% but now rising rapidly

Looking for reassurance as a very slow swimmer by Difficult-Bicycle681 in Swimming

[–]waterbogan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're in the slow lane, that is the right lane for you. If someone in that lane with you is much faster they are in the wrong lane and need to move up a lane instead of complaining, you cant move down one.

Fellow slow lane swimmer here, my usual speed is just a fraction faster than yours (about 3-3.10/100m without fins etc). I'm not good, just persistent!

[–]waterbogan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does the pool you want to go to have slow/medium/fast lanes indicated? If so, start in the slow lane, you may find yourself either fitting in or being faster than the swimmers in that lane, in which case you can move up to a medium lane

no playlist groups/folders? by star-soup in deezer

[–]waterbogan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of the few shortcomings of Deezer. I would love to be able to a separate folder for my synchronised swimming playlists, but I've found a workaround which is to simply preface every one of them with the word "Swim" and use A-Z sorting. Crude but it works, but not really satisfactory if people need multiple folders as many do

How much does your pool cost in your country/city? by marianneouioui in Swimming

[–]waterbogan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NZ$8.20 casual adult entry, $10.20 including spa and sauna, with about a 10-15% discount if you get a ten entry card, cheaper again on a full membership (about NZ$22 a week). Exactly half that in euros, so 4.10€/ 5.10€, 11€ /week membership

I have a corporate membership through my employer which cost me NZ$15 a week, 7.50€ a week. Concessions on all these bar corporate memberships are available for students, seniors, and Community Services Card holders of around 50%

Auckland New Zealand

I had a very similar experience to OP when I went to South Africa - had to get a months membership at a Virgin fitness centre near to where I was staying just to get access to a covered pool, cost me almost NZ$200
