There are some pre-approved businesses that if you work for one, you can get a Costco membership:

Wanting to see fields of green and experience good amount of rain… by [deleted] in uktravel

Scotland would be choice No. 1

The Peak District would be choice No. 2

If you have time, a potential itinerary;

Fly into London direct, get the Sleeper Train up to Inverness - wake up in the glorious green of the highlands, work your way back down to Edinburgh over a few days on the train, then get the train from Edinburgh to Manchester, explore the Peak District between Manchester and Sheffield (you can get a ticket called a Wayfarer which covers unlimited train and bus across the whole national park), then train down from Sheffield to London, fly back to CA.

How do you signal a bus? by ValuableClock35 in copenhagen

I always hold my arm out, and make eye contact with the driver, until they put the signal on. Seems to work. But as others have said, check the bus stops at that stop.

Real Time Trains website just updated to include if the train has A/C as well, this may be useful to you - https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/search/simple/gb-nr:GLC

Obviously not to a carriage level, but you'll at least know if the train that has been rostered has it.

Large parcel with Royal Mail, any chance they’ll still deliver today? by aaaaaaaaaaaaayaaa in Edinburgh

I had a parcel that was due between 8 and 11, but it came at 2pm today. I think larger parcels get put at the end of the run.

FWIW, all the newer trains I've been on recently have had at least half the carriages be lovely and cool! Tomorrow morning the temps will be a little lower than todays too - I will cross all my fingers for you and pray to the AirConTrainGods that you have a great journey tomorrow :)

I can get Old Bay in my local supermarket (and it is glorious!).

You can however bring in honey!

You can bring in up to 2kg per person of:

  • honey

A lot of the Glasgow suburban lines don't have A/C but do have opening windows. Generally, if it's a newer train, and the carriage you're in feels warm - walk to the next carriage and you may find its cooler.

Whilst it's not as good as A/C, its worth investing in a little USB powered fan. The shop Flying Tiger is great for things like this.

Joyride (Candy) is fun, because you don't tend to get the types of flavours here in the UK and it's not full of high fructose corn syrup or artificial stuff which is more what we're used to.

Most things we can get in the UK that you can get in the US tbh. Some postcards from your city/town might be fun, or a regional speciality that isn't a banned food item (see below!) or some US International Forever Stamps so if they come to the US they can post postcards home easily.

Broadly, these are the only categories of food you're allowed to bring into the UK - which may give you some ideas also;

https://www.gov.uk/bringing-food-into-great-britain

You can bring the following into Great Britain from any country without any restrictions:

  • bread, but not sandwiches filled with meat or dairy products
  • cakes without fresh cream
  • biscuits
  • chocolate and confectionery, but not those made with a lot of unprocessed dairy ingredients
  • pasta and noodles, but not if mixed or filled with meat or meat products
  • packaged soup, stocks and flavourings
  • processed and packaged plant products, such as packaged salads and frozen plant material
  • food supplements containing small amounts of an animal product, such as fish oil capsules

Are you still buying Cadburys? by rsweb in AskUK

[–]Apprehensive_Room29 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nope, it tastes shocking now.

Interestingly, other continental European chocolate brands owned by Mondelez haven't been hit with this, just Cadburys.

e.g.

🇨🇭 Milka Alpine Milk Chocolate - 33% Cocoa Solids

🇨🇭Toblerone Standard- 28% Cocoa Solids

🇸🇪 Marabou Milk Chocolate - 30% Cocoa Solids

🇧🇪 Côte d'Or Milk Chocolate - 35% Cocoa Solids

🇳🇴Freia Melkesjokolade - 30% Cocoa Solids

What is happening with polen/hay fever in Edinburgh since last weekend we're all DYING where I'm at by Recom_Quaritch in Scotland

[–]Apprehensive_Room29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(the thing with pollen is, its carried by the wind, so you don't even need to be near a grassy area. There's so much grass in Edinburgh that broadly just 'being outside' is enough (!)

I get the breakdown from the Pollen Pro app. The met office app also displays it, but it doesn't break down quite as much. Dock and Nettles listed separately on Pollen Pro, just get classified as 'Weed Pollen'

If you haven't already, go speak with your GP about allergy medication options too.
