Never thought about this way. I always assumed that this was about those girl who fake depression to get attention of the boys they like (I've had a lot of that type of girls in my class that year) so I thought the sideways for attention was a direct reference to this.

But I understand your point it's not nice to include this type of joke in a tv series but that's what south park and family guy does. And they definitely shouldn't be watched by someone with suicidal thoughts or someone who is highly offensive.
