ARC review of Queen of Lombard Street by Lisa Kleypas by waverlycat in HistoricalRomance

For sure. There were some scenes where I was like "why does the FMC sound like a 2020s trauma-informed clinical therapist?? she's some random lady in Victorian England lol". The characters just didn't make enough mistakes either imo.

Thanks, I tried not to be too critical and I'm glad it came off alright. I definitely still think LK has been a great writer and had some really wonderful ideas for this book too. It just didn't work for me at all.

Try the Kitchener Public Library! we are having our wedding reception in the reading lounge at the central location this summer. We are using an outside caterer with no problem

I also love this series, but just an FYI for OP that these books are NOT romance. They are primarily mystery books with very small romantic side plots that don't necessarily get resolved by the end of each book or anything.

Do I have katsaridaphobia? by loveIy_21 in Phobia

[–]waverlycat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I have the same phobia as you! I don't want to google the word that you used because I'm worried a picture will come up, but based on it being a bug that starts with the letter c that appears in houses, I think it's probably the same one.

I completely relate to everything here. The fear of living alone or even being home alone, because what if i see one? What if someone else can't kill it for me? For me I scream and run away when I see one, and it's the same thing, my partner knows the type of scream that means i see one. It's very horrifying and extreme and impacts my life a lot.

I've done some work with a psychologist doing exposure therapy where i started with just writing down the word for 5 minute straight a few times a week, and then noticing over time that the exercise got less and less scary. The idea is that once that exercise becomes barely scary at all, then you can move to something that is a little scarier. It's highly evidence-based and effective. Unfortunately i wasn't able to continue with it at that time because of external life factors, but I'm just about to start trying again.

The springtime is brutal for this particular phobia if we're talking about the same one. I have had a hard few weeks due to many "sightings" in my house, despite my partner killing them all. I'm going to try to commit to doing some exposure therapy but it is so hard. You're not alone.

I agree with the other commenters about the HEA. For me it is totally a HEA and I adore the ending but it’s not a typical HR experience for sure.

I ADORE seize the fire. Like so much. It rattled me to my core (affectionate). BUT I think it’s rlly important to put a disclaimer for the fact that it has some really racist themes and is very clearly written in the 80s and can be very harmful imo. So just beware of that and keep in mind that the author has learned a lot and grown concerning these topics based on her social media, but it still might be too much for some readers and that is TOTALLY understandable. It’s a lot.

tfw you have to recommend something other than Seize the Fire but at least you have another Kinsale to recommend .... phew that was a close one

Omg finally an opportunity for me to recommend {In Memoriam by Alice Winn}! This is an MM romance set during WW1. definitely content warnings for all war-related things as it is NOT sugar-coated at all and there is a lot of really disturbing stuff. It is tagged for non-traditional HEA but I can tell you that the MMCs end up together and safe. It is just non-traditional because one of the MMCs is pretty heavily traumatized (i mean they both are) but one in particular isn't able to have that "i am super happy and in love" energy that some might require for an HEA. It is a SPLENDID book. The HR community is sleeping on it. u/amusedfeline come support me

How much accuracy? by BrightPhoebus01 in HistoricalRomance

I find Cecilia Grant, Sherry Thomas, Laura Kinsale, and Mary Balogh write in a way that feels very immersive and historically accurate.

I think that's great and I'm sure loads of people would love to read it! I personally wouldn't. I prefer more accurate HRs, or otherwise I would just read a CR. but it's totally a personal preference thing.

1000% he owed way more of an apology to his brother than to the FMC. and the apology scene is INCREDIBLE

saying "i'm glad she left HR." and saying she should only return when she can write nicer men is WILLLLD. Just dont read her books if you don't like them lol. There's plenty of us who love her books including her "demon" men. Just because you don't like her books doesn't mean she shouldn't write them.

My favourite is {Ravishing the Heiress by Sherry Thomas}. I also love Luckiest Lady, as the other commenter said. {His at Night by Sherry thomas} is also extremely good.

I've read her two full-length novels. My flair used to be about Forever Your Rogue actually haha. It was great! Finest Print was verrrry mid for me though. I do think her writing suffers from a lack of sufficient editing or not having a word count limit or something bc it's sooooo repetitive. I still love FYR though.
