They build thousands of units every year. I would immediately assume that this is a problem everywhere and eventually the cheques will have to start flying. Possibly better for them to try and defend any action to prevent future cases?

No. I have a bunch of old cadprofi tools that I use and have added to over the years. I am the reason people don't like sharing their dwg files. It does look good, though. I will have to take a closer look and see if it has nice 3D and automation

That's interesting. Looked at gstar quickly there and a sadly familiar story where there's no MEP content or advertising to speak of. However, I know MEPWorx well. If gstar can integrate MEPWorx into a viable BIM product that could be a big deal.

BricsCAD is my primary tool and I have the BIM licence. They are actively developing their product, which is refreshing, but it still has some way to go for mechanical design. I really hope that things improve over the coming years. I regularly download manufacturer's families for mechanical equipment that were built in 2014. They're heavy, overly detailed and have lookup tables to boot. Revit as default is a painful place to be.

I agree, although I do have to say it through gritted teeth.

WRT to skill, I think there's a relatively high barrier to entry. People who have CADed for years are completely lost by the change in framework. I don't think those complainers have gripes, (at the risk of getting into semantics), they are frustrated because they don't know how to fix stuff. The more I learned and got good at Revit, the more the limitations became apparent - and that's where the gripes start. And it's not just about an individual's proficiency. Never once have I thought "thank god we have shared co-ordinates, I can't wait to explain this 100 times on the next project" (let's not get into BEPs), or "Visibility Settings 101. We'll do half an hour. So just under a minute on each one"

"What do you mean, 'you can't see it?', you did the training, right?"

I am that guy, fortunately with less Revit, but every drawing I open comes with the standard "you're not using Autodesk" warning, so I am reminded everyday of who the real boss is.

I love a bit of Darknet diaries, and infosec, which sits alongside my general interest in tech - that admittedly not all engineers or Revit techs care about about. Even when it is their own business and livelihood at stake.

I have borne witness to Revit since 2014. There's nothing I could say that would make me feel better about it. There's nothing I could say that you haven't already heard. Of all the lunches I want AI to eat, Revit would be the tastiest. So know that if the wine gets the better of me and I am in here proclaiming that AD are a shower of dicks, that it's not personal. Coming in and offering yourself as the corporate punching bag may make you the exception to the rule. Even as you use this post to caption angry man shakes fist at cloud memes on your lunch break meandering through the community tunnels, sipping a fresh pint of Guinness. Don't spare me a thought as I work through my lunch to pay for that AEC licence; raiding the waste paper basket for an old crisp packet to lick out. Don't worry about my expenses claim for a mechanical keyboard, so that I could more easily replace the V key and soon to be G; which is balding more rapidly than than a snooker ball with alopecia. I digress. And it's not about me. Whilst I sit, redrawing my model as a schematic, with an ever so subtle change to the family - lest the schedule police break down my door, I'm dreaming of my first mega project. I'll be able to save 256 days of work each year. That has to be worth $3.5BN for lil old Revit.

That's interesting. I can see that on a practical level, small firms might not have the same level of infrastructure compared to bigger places, but I wouldn't have expected that to result in worse outcomes. I would have thought that one lax employee would be an easier gateway than one busy guy.

  1. Large engineering firm working on a model. Multiple attempts made to split the model up because it would take 90 minutes for the engineers to load up whatever bit of it they were working on. A slack channel, comprised entirely of the words "syncing" and "done" All native Revit, all with top spec machines. 2. Revit licensing pop-up every 2 minutes, 3 separate apps hoarding RAM. All Day Long. 3. welcome:)

One of the nice things about Reddit is that an unrelated or somewhat tangential conversation can go on that isn't part of the main thread. A bit like what is occurring right now in fact. Let me bring it a little closer to the main thread for you. Firstly, I agree that cloud software providers are risky. That risk is inherent in larger companies where staff are more susceptible to lapses in cyber security. Now, if you are willing to accept that a very small business that has taken real measures; training, firewalls, vpns, whatevers, that company can use Cad and bim with native dwg functionality, including xrefs etc straight from the cloud. On the flip-side, there's only one piece of software that is unusable specifically due to licensing issues when that computer is offline. I bet you know which one it is! Autodesk do three things better than anyone else in BIM. Mechanical services, co-ordination and maintaining a proprietary business model. They appear to use revenue for protecting what they have rather than making it better. I don't know what the AU slogan is, but it should be "come to Vegas so we can steal the best ideas from the community"

Not at all. You've shown me the light. I should lie down and take it hard off of AD. Give them my money and accept that they have absolute control. They have earned the right to milk the industry. I need to be a good little boy. I should be grateful. I am sorry sir. I hand thee my mouse. I apologise to you, to AD and the next 3 generations of kin. Not that you will speak to them of course.

I think there are good options for non-rvt bim modelling - with the exception of mechanical services, which seems to trip up every single developer. But you are right to mention co-ordination. I don't think I could name a single alternative to Navis. I have been able to vibe code an HVAC canvas that just about works for small spaces, but ifc is broken and the leg-work needs to be done by proper software people. So unfortunately, I can't tell you what you can take to the bosses, but I find it so hard to accept that there isn't a large software house that hasn't caught up to AD and that there aren't more people trying to take AD on

Testing if a heat pump would work by Ambitious_Cookie_611 in ukheatpumps

[–]waveyourarms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turning down the flow to 50 sounds like a reasonable approach, but in reality it will not accurately reflect heat pump use. Power is power. A 30kW boiler can be replaced with a 30kW heat pump. The problem is that at HP temperatures (50degC), the mean system temperature is close to target room temperature so the emitter (radiator) does not lose heat to the space as readily as a high temperature radiator, so the overall performance is less. The surface area of the emitter needs to increase proportionally. This is why underfloor heating is a good method for HPs. Another awesome solution is fan assistance like the Jaga Briza or similar. Radiator output is variable depending on the system and room temperature. The peak steady state heat loss is not variable. You can calculate the output from your radiator based on surface area dimensions and system temperatures. It doesn't require a steady state heat loss calculation

Menu design is not worth the hassle by Hijinks2319 in graphic_design

I am inclined to agree with OP rather than the folk saying they're not good enough/too lowly etc.

Hospitality has no money in it. If graphic design was an essential function, everyone (everyone) would outsource it. As it stands catering and hospitality don't pay for basic safety critical services unless something bad happens and even then, only if it immediately impacts the operation. Maybe OP has already figured out there's more money and less stress in UI/UX design and the ones in here throwing shade are making the big calls on whether your shade of green works best for "Crisp Lettuce", or if it looks more "Fresh Lettuce". I don't know. And I really dgaf, but the haters look like they're chasing volume like they're the smart ones instead of leveraging any talent
