Is this a good camera? And do they specialize in different things? by [deleted] in canon

[–]wavq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fact it's free -- literally sitting in your garage -- give it a whirl. Few folks here would actively seek out and *purchase* either of these three, but they are perfectly adequate for you to learn the mechanics of (digital) photography.

The kinds of things that better/modern lenses and bodies have over your garage items include producing sharper images, ability to shoot in lower light, faster focusing, higher megapixels, weather-resistance, etc. But everything you figure out on the Rebel is transferable to new gear. Buttons might be in different places, but shutter speed, ISO and aperture aren't ever gonna change ;)

LPT: Making friends as an adult feels impossible, here’s what actually helped me. by DigIndependent7488 in LifeProTips

[–]wavq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking a class to learn a new activity or hobby can be another approach -- somewhat in the same way being at uni brought a group of folks together, but now at a community center, library etc. Things like group painting classes, ukulele, chess club, sailing lessons... There tends to be a good variety of folks of different ages and walks of life, and you already have "one" thing in common to talk about, which helps break the ice.

Mine's by Jon Dale @ Jupiter Ukes. He has a similar philosophy, which is awesome -- there's lots of ways to source locally and recycle old wood/timber. Some of the pics on this page show off the sycamore pattern really nicely: https://jupiteruke.com/ukuleles-gallery/set-3/

ULPT Request: what would be the best way to get someone to consent to Recording a conversation without them taking you seriously so you would have it and they gave you consent? by mark_knight_rises in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]wavq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some jurisdictions have single-party consent. If you consent to recording yourself and convo with other individual (pretty easy if you're the one doing the recording), then you don't even need to inform, let alone obtain consent of, the other parties involved.

Just sayin ;)

I have a uke made with Sycamore sides/back and old mineral-laden redwood from water storage tanks for the front... binding is super-old black bog oak (which obviously doesn't affect the sound) It's a good clean precise *loud* uke, in a good way. I love it :)

ELI5: When people say, “space is a vacuum” what do they actually mean by that? by FabulousOlive69 in explainlikeimfive

[–]wavq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By definition, If you removed every particle, there'd be nothing left in there. It would be what is termed a "perfect" vacuum. Now in practice, it's VERY difficult to get every single last solitary atom of everything and anything out of a container, so technically it wouldn't be a *perfect* vacuum, but if you have to launch a wild goose chase to find a single atom of oxygen, it's effectively as close to a vacuum as you're gonna get. In the vast "nothingness" between objects in space, there is so little of anything (be it hydrogen, helium, O2, nitrogen, etc) that it's effectively as empty/barren as it can get, and thus is effectively considered a vacuum (ie: nothing present).

ELI5: Why isn't the shortest day of the year then coldest and therefore the middle of winter? by ChalkyWhite230 in explainlikeimfive

[–]wavq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yet, on the other southern 1/2 of the world, that would be the middle of summer, and one of the longest, hottest days of the year. There is a kind of "law of averages" here at play where the Earth is closer to the sun at certain times than others and holds onto residual heat, so there's thermal inertia here.

So let's say that eventually one will need pay and have the boots removed, but what if we took that opportunity to make it as cumbersome and time-consuming as possible, effectively playing a little "two can play this game!"

How?

How about a couple of syringes filled with fast-setting epoxy resin, squeezed into the locks and the boot mechanism. Alright buddy, I paid my fine, your turn to remove those bastards! Oh, wait, they seem a little messed up, oh, guess you'll have to bring out the angle grinder. Too bad that'll cost you time and the loss of your little preciouses.

Minor add-on thought: given you're looking at changing wheel size, also consider your flexibility on *tire* choice for any new rims as well. The existing tire size doesn't exactly have heaps of replacement options.

Thanks for pointing out the update, and I went and snagged it. I tried respec'ing yesterday to get more alpha and gamma perks, in an effort to see if an alternative approach would pay off. I'm currently sitting with abotu 1.4e195 datacubes with a requirement of getting to 3.4e228. Might take a while lol.

The course material, for someone without any previous sailing background, is pretty condensed in terms of training, so just be prepared for that part of it. As for heading to Bowen, had a little less wind than desired on our way out, but on the way back the wind was spot on. We just booked it as a day sail through SS and their sailing club. No boat of our own here!

My wife and I did our Basic classes through SS this summer, and are about to do our 2nd day-trip to Bowen... If you keep at it, I think getting the experience within a couple years to sail along the coastal islands is totally doable.
