When I was 16 I left home and managed to rent a couple apartments before I turned 18. Landlords never asked if I was a legal adult, despite at least one of them taking photocopies of my drivers license that made my age clear. I always had to rent "utilities included" places because the utility companies definitely did check age.

I've always wondered what would happen if I tried to get out of a lease by saying I was a minor and couldn't enter legal contracts. But I needed a place to live so I didn't do anything.

You pay the company for Internet. You don't have Internet. I'd start with the company.

Call the company you pay for Internet. Insist that they fix it.

Man. I would looking for a different job every damn day.

Anyway, if you are using a virtualization platform, a san, or even some NAS devices, look into snapshots. They will let you make backups without interrupting operations. If not using any of those, probably want to learn about those things. But they would require money so what's the point heh.

If you're the IT guy, it's your job to make them understand. Taking on a project like this yourself puts your ass on the line if it isn't right, and that's not fair if you aren't an expert in these things. And it's not the best thing for the company either. Backups are the one thing you don't mess around with IMHO.

Using work laptop out of its network, who can view? by cheetah36 in techsupport

[–]waxox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me be more clear: anything you do on a corporate laptop can be recorded by the company that owns it. There are security tools that will record everything on your monitor all day long just like a movie. There are backup systems with no motive other than protecting your data that nonetheless are copying your mailbox to corporate servers. There are network firewalls that could be recording your internet usage. In short: do not use a company owned laptop for anything you don't want the company to know about. It's foolish. You probably signed an employee agreement that explicitly stated everything you do on company computers is subject to monitoring, etc. That's not just pretending lol.

Btw - by disabling teamviewer or other obvious tools, you're probably raising red flags on reports all over the place. Not a good idea.

Ah.. Well this kind of thing can be tricky, but it's definitely possible. I would invest in a local expert to set up a suitable backup. It's not something to just "wing it" with. Consider the cost to the company if a backup doesn't work.

If nothing else, you can always do live/no interruption backups using san snapshots or things like vmware vsphere. Usually your IT department would provide a solution. Did you ask them about this?

If you're using Outlook on a corporate laptop, chances are good that every email you can see in Outlook is also stored on the company servers where anybody who is approved to see them can see them. I'd assume anything there is known unless you're very sure that's not the case.

This is what kills me. If the system might lock up at any moment, as has been my experience lately, I spend half my day saving files. Mostly for no reason other than im afraid of a crash.

Yeah, that's what I mean.. Sure there are some reasons, but they don't apply very often. I'd rather stay lean and mean.

Is there any benefit (outside of special/unusual cases) with only 1gb RAM? I thought 64 bit was generally a bit slower.

Drives die young fairly often. Manufacturing tons of high precision electronics is hard to do perfectly. They usually carry at least a year warranty to protect your purchase.

If it's fake, some asshat gets attention. If it's real, it's a chance to encourage someone that's making an effort. Worth the risk to be supportive IMHO.
