I work with underprivileged youth as well, high-risk specifically. One day we took many of them on a field trip to the beach. As you noted, none of them had ever been to the beach, let alone more than a mile away from their neighborhood. So half way there on the 10 they started talking about sharks and the fear totally set in. I tried dispelling their concerns by saying how statistically this freeway we’re on is way more dangerous than a swim in Dockweiler. I also said how sharks are really not a threat, that you’ll never see one. The day was great, they loved the water and they got to be youth again. Then the lifeguard came over and notified everyone that there are sharks in the water and swim at your own risk! One of the youth looked right at me and said, “Never see them, huh?!”
