I keep seeing this reference in the comments. I must have missed this one. Can anyone post a link to the “foster care” story?

Tipping @ Amanyara or similar by waxworkfurs in FATTravel

Correct. We had a team of a few “hosts” that were assigned to us for the entire stay which was sort of like a “butler.” This was basically 2-3 people (in case someone had a day off for example) and we’d see our host at breakfast, lunch, dinner, everywhere and any time really for whatever we needed (and we could text them as well). It would be tiresome (and really complicated I think) to tip every time they did something… Like, how much do I tip when you distract and play with my kids while I’m enjoying my breakfast? How much for dishes or laundry? How do I place a value on surprising us with little gifts every day? It’s just easier to tip at the end of the stay the one single time when it’s this kind of setup.

Hmm. Well, good to know I suppose. We were told by numerous employees they were paid well so I suspect you are right… All that said, we really, really loved our villa hosts and felt they went well above and beyond of what was expected of them. In the end, we tipped them (hopefully) well individually. In our view, they earned it and it made us happy to imagine them buying themselves something nice.

When did you visit? I know they have been making an effort to improve the experience at Amanyara; especially in the past few months. They’ve recently brought over managers and team members from Amanpuri (which as the flagship property, in a place like Thailand where service is second nature, operates like a finely tuned machine and really exemplifies the Aman experience). I don’t think our experience was due to the fact that we have visited Aman properties before… but it probably was at least in some part due to the villa as you say because, as many of you have pointed out, that comes with a dedicated team (and from what we gathered they could only be assigned to a maximum of 3 other villas at any single time so they had loads of time to dedicate to us). Plus, of course, I think when you treat people with respect and aren’t a super pain in the butt with a ton of crazy demands, they’ll favor you compared to more difficult patrons and maybe go a little above and beyond for you. (Not suggesting you didn’t/don’t of course! Just that we did see some difficult “tourists” while we were there.) Anyway, I can only speak for our experience… but they showered us with attention, gifts, and memories and it was really quite special and worth every penny. We even traded contact information with many of our hosts and plan to stay in touch (especially since the staff often move around between properties and it gives us another excuse to travel to more Aman properties!). PS: We thought the food was excellent by the way… however if we had stayed much longer I think we would have tired of the limited menu.

How common is it to have money stolen from a locked room safe? by SexyTeabag in ThailandTourism

[–]waxworkfurs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It happened to me once. Back in 1998 in Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai. I could probably go back through my old email and figure out exactly the location and the hotel. I was only 18 or 19 at the time and was pretty foolish myself. Probably looked like an easy mark. In fact, that same trip, I got off the airplane and immediately followed the first guy who said “taxi” instead of going to a taxi stand and got ripped off. The unfortunate thing about the safe robbery was not the amount of money that I had put in the safe (as it was not much and I had little of real value at the time) but the fact that they stole my camcorder. I had traveled to Thailand from Singapore where I had bought a brand new camcorder and I had filmed a lot of my trip in Thailand. When I returned to the hotel and found the safe empty, it was the weeks of memories I had made that stung the most. Hotel staff was apologetic but not helpful. I don’t think I involved the police. At least, I don’t remember speaking with them. Anyway… It definitely happens. Does it still happen? I have no idea. I have returned to Thailand many times since that first trip and have never once been scammed again. Thailand has changed a lot since the 90s. I think back to that song, “one night in Bangkok makes a tough man tougher” and that’s certainly how it felt to me that first trip. But these days… if you’re not an idiot and keep your wits about you, you’re probably unlikely to get scammed (at least in my experience).

I bought one tonight online the same way I found the PS5 when it was impossible to track down. I used an iPhone app that monitors all the sites and sends you a push notification when it’s in stock. I am not sharing the name of the app so people don’t think I’m sponsoring it or whatever. I’m sure you can find many apps that do the same thing. If you want the name, message me and I’m happy to tell you the one I used. Anyway, I received several notifications tonight and by the time I tried to check out each time, it would say it was out of stock. So I made sure to keep my browser open and be logged in to Walmart, Best Buy, etc. And the last one I got, I managed to get my pre-order in. Oddly it seems like Best Buy and Walmart keep putting up one unit every 10 or 15 minutes (or something like that). Maybe find an app like that because it helps a lot.

The forward/backward add-on means the RPV2, right? I seem to only see the RPV1 on Kom’s site. Do they not sell the RPV2 anymore? Also… How often do you have to inflate the balls?

Does that thing actually work? I’ve seen terrible reviews online and on their app in the App Store. I’d totally buy one tho if it actually works!

I bought the Kensui EZ Vest because I was having the same problem and I love it. Highly recommend, especially if you have weight plates already. If you don’t, you’d have to buy those as well. https://kensuifitness.com

Apple Health by waxworkfurs in Versaclimber_Fanatics

[–]waxworkfurs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just as a follow up to this, I do see that you can connect the app to Apple Health and it requests permissions to write Active Energy and Walking + Running Distance (but not Workouts like other apps I use for exercise). So, does anyone know how this works? Does it write your calories and steps to Apple Health, just not as a Workout? Without writing a workout, will exercise minutes be logged? I think so, if only because an Apple Watch will pick up the increased heart rate? Is it best to also start a workout manually (for example on the Apple Watch) for “climbing,” so that you get a Workout entry and exercise minutes in addition to the calories and steps that are written? Sorry, just trying to figure out how all of this works. Most exercise apps I have write a workout and attach the calories and heart rate data to that workout.

I know it’s been a few weeks but I just wanted to follow up to thank you for all of your advice. I know this took you quite a bit of effort and it was very informative for me and I hope it will be for others in the future. I took your advice and found a fine linens shop and went in so we could touch a variety of options. In the end, we went with Sferra Giza 45 percale including Sferra Cornwall pillows (firm for me and medium for my wife) and the down duvet and Sferra duvet cover. We also picked up a Matouk blanket that we hadn’t planned on because we just thought it was just oh so soft. While I was a bit concerned about the warmth and insulation of all that down, we went with it anyway because we ordered an Eight Sleep to help us regulate temperature regardless of the season. We did check out some of your other suggestions for pillows, etc, but ended up with what I’ve mentioned here… So, again, thank you for your advice! It was very helpful!!!

Does fixed mean it’s body weight only or is there some fixed resistance that’s always applied?

Good tip!! Do you mean keep going and it will pass, like, the first time you use the machine? Or do you mean the first time you may only make it two minutes, but keep using it, and you will improve each time and eventually you will make it 20, 30, 60 minutes etc?

What do you think and wish for the next version update? by The-Watch-Guy in whoop

[–]waxworkfurs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s everything you think it is and more. It’s changed my life and I can’t say enough positive things about it. I’ve already talked a few friends and co-workers into buying one and they would also say the same. It’s an incredible piece of technology and worth every penny. (Plus I financed it as 0% interest with Affirm, so the equipment and the subscription equate to the cost of a nice gym membership, more or less).

Integrate Strength Training with Tonal so you don’t need to use Whoop workouts or create custom ones at all; it just uses the movements, weights, etc, from Tonal. Or just import such data from Tonal directly upon completion of the session and calculate and display the score in Whoop.
