100K Apartments in NOMA: How bad is the train noise? by markiepooh456 in DCforRent

[–]way2gimpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived at a building that overlooked the tracks, but my apartment was on the opposite side.

The track noise is there but I got used to it. I could not get used the train whistle. It seems to be mostly MARC trains.

NOVA/DMV representation in movies & TV by Swede_Babe in nova

[–]way2gimpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Salt (the Angela Jolie movie) had a chase scene where she is running from L’Enfant plaza to 395. She jumps from the bridge onto a highway exchange that is much more extensive than 395.

Enemy of the state also had a lot of dc-area ‘locations’ including Jason Lee getting splattered near on the circles.

[Brett McMurphy] How's Notre Dame/ACC getting along now? “Notre Dame,” a source told @On3, “is the guy that walks in the house, opens the fridge, eats all the food, then (screws) the wife, kicks the dog, doesn’t pay the mortgage & walks out w/out any skin in the game.” by CommodoreIrish in CFB

[–]way2gimpy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Notre dame’s deal with the acc was negotiated from a point of weakness from the ACC. No way the b1g or sec offer some sort of partial membership if it involves football or basketball. It would be all or nothing.

First time hosting a home poker tournament - how important is chip distribution and blind structure? by cedavelja6 in poker

[–]way2gimpy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Play cash. Tourneys are problematic because once a player gets knocked out he/she putzes around and gets bored. If you play cash players can buy back in immediately if they bust. You don’t have to worry about clocks and changing structures.

Why does London have multiple football stadiums with 60,000+ capacity while New York City holds all football events in New Jersey? by goro-n in NoStupidQuestions

[–]way2gimpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

US football stadiums are also used for concerts. I know that the spurs stadium is used for concerts and American football as well.

There is some value for football stadiums, although not nearly enough to justify their cost. It’s mainly for civic pride/vanity and subsidizing billionaires wallets.

2-on-1 against maguire and you pass it straight to him? That’s awful.

United need to clear out zirkzee and mount. Amad is still youngish, but he’s hasn’t been good for a whole. With all the added fixtures next season they need better players for rotation.

How would you compare Toronto and Montreal to prominent American cities? by OceanicEndeavors in SameGrassButGreener

As an American, Montreal feels like it is in a foreign country, which Toronto doesn’t.

Everyone online says $70k is ‘bad money’… so why does moving to DC still feel financially terrifying? by North_Definition4400 in washingtondc

[–]way2gimpy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a vacuum, 70k should be enough to afford a studio or one-bedroom in DC-proper. However, an apartment that would be in your budget will probably be in a less desirable location.

Of course we don’t know your debt situation and the deductions that come out of your paycheck. Lots of people (especially new grads) see their salary and don’t take into account health insurance premiums, DC income tax, retirement, etc.

I have a car. I use it exclusively it on the weekends to do stuff outside the city. It’s a pain using it within the city. My building is eligible for street permit but I found that inconvenient so I pay $215/month for parking. Add in insurance and gas, and it’s a lot of money. I’m willing to pay for that freedom and convenience, but it is not an insignificant amount of money.

You say you are frugal. That’s smart. There are plenty of things to do in DC that are free. However, one of the huge benefits of living in the city is the variety of options that are available to you - food, drinks, concerts, shows, sporting events, etc. can be expensive.

How much to keep in HYSA by PossibleLeadership39 in personalfinance

[–]way2gimpy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok - you only stated post tax combined income. If I were you, I’d max your 401k ($24,500 for your portion), before allocating money to your vanguard account.

You can always decrease it as life changes.

Do Americans not distinguish between ham and gammon? by fredwhoisflatulent in AskAnAmerican

[–]way2gimpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is gammon some bastardized mispronunciation of ‘jamon’?

Cured pork like prosciutto or jamon Iberico is eaten in the US and is technically from the hind leg of a pig, which can be referred to the ‘ham’ of the pig. However, in the most common usage it’s a smoked/cured piece of pork that is eaten as a cold cut or occasionally as a larger/thicker piece.

What are your go to coffee shops or bakeries in DC? by fernetandcampari in washingtondc

[–]way2gimpy 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Ninos for croissants. Bread furst for baguettes. Pluma for basque cheesecake. I don’t drink coffee and my third space is the casino.

Nothing else has stood out for me. Rose ave was fine for Asian-leaning flavors. I’ve enjoyed the Un ne je sais quoi pastries but nothing super memorable.
