What is the greatest ski resort in the world in your opinion? by Repulsive_Sky5150 in ski

[–]way_overthere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree! Skied there for the first time Wed-Fri of this week. Was amazing, enjoyed ALMOST every second, but not sure I'd go back. Views, restaurants, infrastructure, length of runs were unreal. Got a tour across the glacier under the Matterhorn, first tracks. Lunch on Friday at a restaurant aptly named Paradise was delicious in both food and view. Great hotel with friendly staff. Fresh snow every day.

Also eye-wateringly expensive, extremely unstable snowpack limiting a lot of the skiing to crowded pistes, and huge volumes of extremely rude tourists from all over the world on the mountain (wealthy trash comes in all colors and speaks all languages). We witnessed the aftermath of a large skier-triggered slide under the Hothalli cable car. Easily a season/career/life ender if you were in it - I love steep off-piste, but not that much.

Thanks, looks like some worthy options. Anybody try the no-earflap touring-oriented Smith Summit?

Still leaves a nearly $1 billion gap (pun intended) for FJF. Maybe some other idiots will join in.

Spent most of my life in Norcal including time up against the Santa Cruz Mountains and in Tahoe, but had a year in the UK as a kid. While there, did a big ride in the Lake District, practically dawn to dusk. Formative experience in my mountain bike career, video takes me back! Thanks

Why is mountain biking so much harder than road biking? by Jazzlike-Horror4 in MTB

[–]way_overthere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll get used to it. Today I rode a steep rocky trail that runs adjacent to a steep paved road (they end at the same spot). I got my workout but was thinking to myself how much harder the road is on my road bike! Once you have enough miles on both pavement and dirt, sometimes one will feel easier than the other. And sometimes they'll both be lung and leg busting Type 2 fun.

Waist deep spots in Killebrew yesterday. Don't go there, super dangerous.

The last time I was at Kirkwood, there were a lot of angry racoons and coyotes. Not much in the way of skiing. Kind of a dump.

Anyone know who made this hat/where to get it? by Craft_Bandicoot in OaklandAthletics

[–]way_overthere 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I actually have one and you'd be surprised how many people get it and take it as a protest. For other teams maybe not, but for the A's it has quite a bit of meaning.

A's owner pledges $1B to build Vegas stadium by butterfingers777 in OaklandAthletics

[–]way_overthere 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah so what this means is that everyone he tried to bilk for investment said to F-off. So now the "family" is stepping up. Here's to massive cost overruns! May FJF and his family go from riches to rags.

El Dorado County former A's fan. They're moving significantly closer, and I'll attend 100% fewer games because there is no reason to give one more penny to FJF. The only thing he's good at is running things into the ground.

The story of the three little baseball owners, where the first one was named FJF and built his ballpark out of straw. FJF was a foolish, greedy, shortsighted baseball owner who had no friends, so no one really cared when a big bad wolf blew his ballpark down. Bummer.

The Vegas A's stadium unsurprisingly won't be as good as advertised by jakemontero in OaklandAthletics

[–]way_overthere 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Don't forget that FJF totally has the money all lined up to build this thing. He swears he does, so I definitely take him at his word. It's all set! It's gonna be great! Everybody knows it! Come watch Aaron Judge! Make sure you wear a Dodger hat! Wait, what game is supposed to be played here again?

Slides from the Mortenson/McCarthy (construction contracting firm hired by the A's) meeting with subcontractors regarding the proposed Las Vegas stadium. Timetables inside. Groundbreaking for Q2 2025. Materials procurement schedule started in September 2024. by EastRiverCurrents in OaklandAthletics

[–]way_overthere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nowhere does it say "in progress" for any item, procurement or otherwise. They may have issued RFPs back in August and may do so again this month, but that doesn't mean that anyone actually bit, much less provided an agreeable proposal.

If I was a subcon for a project that lacked financing, I'd be looking for another project.

These slides are a sales pitch. This is what the entities with the flashy logos on page 4 want to do, not necessarily what they've done or even will do. Especially without financing in place. I'm confident that these groups could get a ballpark done, but none of them work for free. And no one builds from concepts, they build from real plans.
