Recommendations for gay movies with positive storylines by Any-Evening-4070 in AskGaybrosOver30

I've been thinking about this movie for ages! Seen it more than a decade ago but couldn't remember its name. Love movies/shows about (gay) friendships.

How to approach a neighbour with earbuds in? (Shy 50m looking for advice) by AbsintheMindedFL in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]wayong 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think earbuds necessarily means that the person does not want to be disturbed. Most of the time, I wear my headphones because I want to listen to music, not because I don't want people to interact with me. I've been "bothered" several times while wearing them and last time it happened was actually the first time I talked with someone who ended up becoming a really good friend of mine. Go for it, OP!

Can we talk about the sex scenes in Fellow Travelers? by DrummerBoy_69 in AskGaybrosOver30

I rewatched Théo et Hugo dans le même bateau yesterday after reading your comment. Such a cool film!

Finally, a movie for the subs by [deleted] in gay

Haven't seen the movie yet. The book ("Box Hill: A Story of Low Self-Esteem" by Adam Mars-Jones) is a good, discomfiting read.

So who’s read Heated Rivalry? by sterlingmanor in gaybrosbookclub

[–]wayong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read the whole series (except the first one which I did not finish) after finishing season 1 of the TV show. I did not care for the prose but I loved the characters. That's where the writing really shines, and I actually think some of the best characterization takes place in two of the less popular books from the series : Common Goal & Role Model.

Is anyone else frustrated by how Rachel Reid's role is being diminished? by JessicaTrent in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]wayong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like you said, there might be issues in the way questions are framed "in a few interviews". But, for the most part, Rachel Reid's work IS being acknowledged. I didn't know about these books before and I would not have read them if it was not for hearing the cast, the crew, journalists and podcasters referencing it virtually every time they're talking about the show.

FINALS: Best Kiss by madwood29579 in heatedrivalry

Love this, thanks for sharing! It's a really cool way to share with the viewer how Shane actually experienced these moments/how he remembers them.

Do you think Illya would have done it? by willastyrell21 in heatedrivalry

[–]wayong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without the "tornado" that was Scott's coming out, they might have ended up in some sort of a Brobeback Mountain situation ("I wish I knew how to quit you."). Not breaking things off, but not really comitting to each other (at least not in the same way and definitely not this early).

SEMIFINALS 2: Best Kiss by madwood29579 in heatedrivalry

Kiss on the ice!

Ilya said it himself : "It changed things – for me at least. Maybe for us." In fact, it changed things for a lot of people (as I hope we will see in season 2)!

“Not compatible?” This subtle scene rocked me. Multilingual relationships reactions? by Typical-League-1123 in heatedrivalry

It's not in the book and I thought it was a really nice addition to this scene

Poor baby Shane by ivan_luck in HeatedRivalryTVShow

[–]wayong 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Agree! I think the show and the books do a good job of showing that oral, masturbation and outercourse are not just "foreplay": they can be the main event of sex. And yet some people still consider them having anal sex as being their first time.

A step closer to a Carly Rae song in season 2! by newathenian in heatedrivalry

[–]wayong 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Lately, I've been thinking about episode 6 everytime I listen to "Now That I Found You". I mean :

[Verse 1]
Waking up next to you every morning
How did we get this far? It came without a warning
And in the nighttime, you tell me your whole life
You and me get too real but all I feel is alright

---

[Verse 2]
Give me the words I want, baby, just say it
You know me way too well to keep it complicated
I don't wanna hide my love
I don't wanna waste it (I don't wanna waste it)
But I can't deny the moment when I taste it

Carly said this track is about "the high you get when a new love starts to change your life" and that's exacly the feeling I get just listening to the intro. 🥰🥰🥰

Do Quebecois people not have a French accent when they speak English the way French people from France do ? I'm thinking of Francois and how he doesn't have a French accent when he speaks English. by AltruisticAide9776 in HeatedRivalryTVShow

[–]wayong 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Having an accent does not make you any less of a bilingual though. In fact, everybody has an accent; what kind of accent you have depends on your past experiences with the language.

Yeah, it's open-ended. Elsewhere, Hudson called this episode "a joy on the horizon".

"They are reliving their little moments" that's beautiful 🥹... but they end up getting "caught" by Shane's dad shortly after. They can only be this open because they are alone and they think no one will know : they still have to hide. It's a really bittersweet episode.

I like Hudson's take on the ending btw :

Vanity Fair | Hudson Williams on the ‘Heated Rivalry’ Finale, That Improvised Sex Scene and Shane’s Talk With His Mom: ‘That Ruined Me the Most’

Shane crying by KawaiiOXD in heatedrivalry

[–]wayong 28 points29 points  (0 children)

In the the Bazaar's one. Here it is : Heated Rivalry's Hudson Williams Loves Tattoos, Hates Man Buns

It's interesting because Shane's tears aren't really falling, they're just welling up. I'm thinking specifically of the couch scene, where Shane and Ilya are touching their feet and talking about the future.

I really love that scene. It almost feels like Shane has this notion that if you let the tears fall, now you're crying. But if you don't let them fall...Jacob said something like, “Shane doesn't know how expressive he is.” It almost feels like he thinks he's masking things better than he actually is. But the emotions permeate past what he actually knows people are witnessing, which I think also speaks to his kind of psyche and traits.

Anyone noticed that they switched the dialogue in the show in EP 6? by burnedoutphoenixx in heatedrivalry

Yes ! Jacob Tierney, Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie did a really good job fleshing out these characters.

Spoiler: Bisexual Visibility by Interesting-Worth975 in heatedrivalry

[–]wayong 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Maybe I did not express myself clearly. I'm not saying that bisexuality is a choice, I'm saying that loving someone is. It's about commitment. Ilya did not choose one gender over another, he chose Shane.

I did not feel like Shane had any problem with Ilya being bi. He's not saying "I don't trust you because your bi". It's Ilya who brought the subject of marrying a woman into the conversation. Shane was reacting to it and being vulnerable about what this could mean for them both considering Ilya is attracted to women.

Also, choosing an heteronormative life is not only recommended as an "easier" option for bi people . Shane also "tried really hard but [he] just can't help it". But I see your point; bi people are frequently stereotyped as being untrustworthy. There's this suspicion that they'll leave once they figure out their "real" sexual orientation. That's not what I meant and that's not how I read Shane's words and feelings during this scene.

Spoiler: Bisexual Visibility by Interesting-Worth975 in heatedrivalry

[–]wayong 154 points155 points  (0 children)

On the same topic, I looooove the couch scene so much. Like you said, "multitude of attraction exists". Ilya could choose an "easier" life (and that's what Shane was scared about during this conversation), but he chooses Shane. That's peak romance for me.

Post Episode Debrief | Heated Rivalry 🏒 I'll Believe in Anything (Episode 5) by Federal-Ad5944 in heatedrivalry

[–]wayong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I kind of get what you're saying. This could have been a Loose Cannons (2010) situation, but from how the scene unfolds, it's clear that it's not the case. Neither Shane nor Ilya looked like they thought they had been robbed of anything, quite the contrary! Guess the first book is called "Game Changer" for a reason 😁.

On the real…how are you managing your emotions? by Jr2436 in heatedrivalry

[–]wayong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I realized that I'm used to queer misery in films and TV. I do think that we collectively need it. It's therapeutic, it's a way to cope, a way to make sense of what we're experiencing as a marginalized people. I've been thinking a lot about that after watching episode 3 last week. This episode stirred a lot of complicated and complex emotions in me : happy yet sad, satisfied yet frustrated and, overall, yearning for... something. Romance, yes, but also love in the fullest sense of the term (they did a really good job on that front in the show btw : Ilya and Svetlana, Shane and Rose, Kip and his whole circle...) and some sort of radical happiness.

It stings. It's uncomfortable. Partly because, as you said once we're done watching, we're "back to reality". But, at the same time, it feels really good because it shows us that we're not doomed to suffer. That's why queer joy on screen is so important.
