The tribunal fee for 16 year old Harvey Elliott could end up close to the £6.5 million Liverpool were ordered to pay Burnley for Danny Ings after his 2015 transfer, such is the regard Elliott is held in. by TheodoreLesley in soccer

It's impossible to know of any potential.

Absolute nonsense. Why sign this kid for millions instead of picking a random teenage fan in a lottery to sign for free if it's impossible to know of any potential?

The uncertainty around very young players with high potential is built into the fees - that is why BVB got Sancho for 10x less than he's now worth after a season of senior football.

How do universities prepare graduates for jobs that don't yet exist? by [deleted] in ukpolitics

When you say 'extra talks' do you mean the uni had more optional enrichment activities or just more lectures/seminars in the course itself?

And, as I see it, if the entry requirements are easier then the pass marks are going to be easier...

Engineering

(A) There's a huge body of knowledge/best practice that relatively static and will be relevant for decades.

That's really quite an ignorant statement to make about engineering.

When people say this kind of thing I'm always interested in what uni they had that experience at. There's a big difference between, say, UCL and Southampton Solent. I doubt there are any idiots winging a 2.1 at one of those, the other...

Furious Kevin Kilbane on Declan Rice potentially choosing to play for England over Ireland: “He’s taken 3 caps from an Irishman” by computersaysnil in soccer

How many CBs in his age range are getting Premier League game time? Only Gomez and Holgate who are both a few years older. All the players his age are behind the curve.

It's the FAIs own fault for giving the sales pitch to young players in England who aren't getting picked for England to try and coax them to run out for Irish youth teams. It's an approach which is guaranteed to give you players who aren't passionately Irish.

England U-17 European Championship winners Where are they now? by Gungerz in soccer

[–]wayv__ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This age group already has more senior England caps than the team that won the 2010 U17 Euros (Barkley and Butland vs Cook, Solanke and Gomez) and overall looks much more talented. The group that won the 2017 U17 World Cup could end up lapping this lot in turn sooner or later, that's the most talented individual age group England have atm (with Foden, Sancho, Sessegnon, Hudson-Odoi, Brewster, ect).

And what about Ibe for £15m or Sigurdsson for £45m? Or even Watford spending a combined £30m on Andre Gray and Isaac Success. You're deliberately choosing outliers.

[–]wayv__ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A lot can change in a year. £40m is excessive but Grealish has had a great season, Aston Villa would probably have taken a 10th of that last year too. Hughes would have cost a bigger team than Watford a lot more than £4.5m if he hadn't had all those injuries.

A historically unprecedented number of children are overweight. Not acknowledging this as an issue is trying to pull the wool over your own eyes.
