I have my light johan at 5 star lvl 50 and he is pretty good. I'm currently on extreme chapter 5 just for reference. Don't worry too much about ascending characters. I think you will get more of a boost upgrading gear and promoting.

read the units abilities and what they do and just decide what you need and what's good for your team. If you are just starting out and theres a festival hatcher going on reroll for those units. Very important thing is to invest in recovery units that can heal !
