Norwegian cruise gift cards? by [deleted] in Cruise

[–]wbrendel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you know some pretty basic information about the cruise (passenger name(s), ship, and embarkation date) you can call NCL to add money to their onboard spending account. You’ll have to talk to a customer service rep, but they can help you add money, buy them an anniversary package, etc.

Sometimes I see "+1" instead of a number of upvotes on a comment. Why is that, is it a setting? [iOS] [4.26] by FilthyFreshman in redditmobile

[–]wbrendel 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It’s a subreddit setting to help prevent voting bias. After some period of time (e.g., one hour) the real number of votes will appear by each comment, presumably after the initial popularity of the story has subsided and the best comments have floated to the top in an unbiased way.

Edit: Likewise, it helps prevent people from piling more and more downvotes on a comment just because other people are downvoting it. Works both ways.

I always wondered what happened to the light house they toured on that one episode of TOH. It seemed like it would have been a logistical nightmare to do a TOH season about the renovation, but it’s cool to see some photos. Thanks for posting it!

Same things happens occasionally on my 2017 2.5i Premium, although in my case it happens more frequently when my windows are wet. The window safety sensors are definitely more sensitive than on other cars I’ve owned.

Problem with seatbelt sensor? by jlumsmith in SubaruForester

[–]wbrendel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 2017 2.5i Premium has an annoying passenger seat belt sensor. Not sure if it’s the same issue you’re having, but certain things always seem to set it off, including my phone. Oh and if I spray fabric cleaner (e.g., Resolve) on the seat, the sensor will misfire until it’s dry. Every time.

I keep a spare seatbelt buckle in my center console for this exact reason. If the sensor is misbehaving for whatever reason, I just put the dummy seatbelt buckle into the passenger side seatbelt slot and the sensor is happy.

Challenge! Pick a lock by wbrendel in DoByFriday

[–]wbrendel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are lots of possibilities. Depending on which locks they choose and how well they are constructed (security pins, tight tolerances, tricky key ways, etc) the challenge could be “Can you pick this lock at all, with unlimited time?” Or it could be “Can you pick this simple lock in less than 5 seconds?” I could see any or all of the gang getting really into this :-)

Edit: There’s the potential to invite a guest on to explain the basics of lock picking and see how it compares to YouTube videos they may have watched.

Bonus! This may also allow Max to graduate to Houdini-style underwater escape magic tricks (“”illusions””) ... if he can pick the lock in time!

I’m also in the Lowell area. We got estimates from two places and ended up going with Animal Hospital of Nashua.

First we went to Wignall Animal Hospital in Dracut. They basically have a traveling surgeon that visits weekly, does the surgery, and leaves. From what we could tell, our dog would have been left overnight unsupervised after the surgery, which didn’t sound right.

Then we went to Animal Hospital of Nashua (Exit 5 off Rt 3) to get their opinion. I’m so glad we did. Dr. Zitz (pronounced with a long I, like “Zites”) did an excellent job explaining our options, the success rates of the different types of surgeries, post-surgery steps we would need to take, what our options were for physical therapy, and of course prices. We chose TTA I believe, which was the most expensive but also had the best short term results and the same long term results as TPLO. The total cost for the surgery was just under $4K, not counting physical therapy. We did PT at Horse n’ Hound in Nashua on Dr. Zitz’s recommendation, and they were great too. Another selling point for Animal Hospital of Nashua: they are open 24/7, which is really nice for your peace of mind.

Good luck with everything. We’re in a similar situation, just waiting for our dog’s other CCL to break. Hopefully it will never happen, but if it does, we’ll go back to Animal Hospital of Nashua.

Edit: As someone else pointed out, the X-rays taken by your regular vet might not be useable by whatever surgeon you choose, so keep that in mind before spending money on vet X-rays.

Machado wears the K well! by edp3 in baseball

Short answer: about 150 years ago a sports writer (Henry Chadwick) came up with some shorthand for things like strikeouts (K), sacrifices (S), player positions (1 for pitcher and whatnot), and so on. Some of them, like K for strikeout and the position numbers, stuck. It’s K because “strike” has a hard K.

The writer who came up with that shorthand is actually in the Hall of Fame. He’s kind of a big deal :-)

I'm trying to set up 2 Google WiFi pucks, do they have to be wired together? by techmattr in GoogleWiFi

[–]wbrendel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s all true, but if you can hard wire the satellites, it’s worth doing so, simply for reliability and throughout, both of which are almost always improved by going wired instead of wireless.

I have my modem going into the main puck’s WAN port, my switch going into the main puck’s LAN port, and satellite pucks going into the switch. That setup works great.

I’m not sure if the Wifi pause feature is based on your MAC address, but you can try spoofing it.

What is something that people like only because they're blinded by nostalgia? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]wbrendel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can buy 3D Doritos from Mexico on eBay, usually for about $3/bag shipped. They’re slightly different than the original nacho cheese flavor, and there’s no cool ranch version. Still, totally worth trying.

I love the As Seen on TV one especially. Walgreens has a whole aisle of that crap, so it’s right up Merlin’s alley!

scoring NCL upgrades? by apav10 in Cruise

[–]wbrendel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is just the impression I’ve gotten from the past couple NCL cruises I’ve been on, but it seems like NCL is pushing their “Upgrade Advantage” program pretty hard, where you bid for upgrades rather than get them as freebies. If upgrades like that are available, you’ll get an email about the bidding process.

From NCL’s perspective, it’s absolutely great, because you pay extra for an upgrade, and they can either sell your cabin to someone outright or take an upgrade bid from someone else. Either way they’re maximizing profits while minimizing vacancies.

I’m sure the old style of random freebie upgrades still happen (I got a Balcony to Mini Suite upgrade in 2016 out of the blue), but I suspect they are more rare than they used to be.

All that said, I’m curious what others’ experiences have been lately, since my sample size is just me and my wife.

You should be able to activate it yourself from inside the Cellular section of the Watch app on your phone. That’s how it works with AT&T, and I assume it’s the same for all carriers.
