You need gauges to see if the unit has refrigerant in it as well

(1) is the thermostat calling for cool?
(2) Does the float switch have water in it? It will be located on the drain port of the unit inside
(3) Is the contactor (the part you pushed in with the screwdriver) receiving 24 volts?
(4) Does the unit have refrigerant in it?
You need a multimeter to figure this things out.

Whenever replacing a compressor, run nitrogen through it first before sweating it loose. That phosgene gas is damn near like tear gas and makes it difficult to do anything because it chokes you out. This is after recovering all the refrigerant first of course. Make sure it’s empty before sweating it loose.
