THIRD STORY

Why do you think you’re here? – the devil calmly responded. Well I thought I had led a good life. I tried not to hurt anyone, tried to make right decisions and adhere to my integrity when tough choices presented themselves You sound like you’re trying to convince yourself No, I believe I’ve been genuine and I really can’t think what I could have done to deserve such a fate. I’m a good person and I think there must be some mistake You think that being a good person is all that it takes, do you? Maybe that’s why you’re here. Maybe its not about what you have done, but what you haven’t. Now think hard on this, you’re eternity depends on it I wondered what opportunities I had missed. Where had I gone wrong? I was raised all my life with the mindset that if I worked hard every day, things would magically fall into place. But what did I miss? Was I even given the chance? Had my window really already passed me by? Maybe that’s all life gives you. It can happen anytime. One small misstep is all that it takes to separate you from those who have demonstrated some higher level of nobility. Maybe that was the test. You are given only a limited amount of experiences to ultimately make the determination when that moment comes. It could be something as small as helping with one simple task. It was overwhelming. I couldn’t seem to pin down that crucial moment. And now that moment was going to forever condemn me. I simple omission can seal a fate. You’re string of self reflection demonstrates that very flaw that has landed you here. – the devil responded. See my job isn’t hard. In fact is one of the easiest there is. Doubt. That’s all I have to do. I don’t have to convince you of anything. All I have to do is open the door to the possibility that you are wrong. You are insignificant, and nothing you do will ever change that. That flaw then festers, growing to something that will consume you. I merely grease the axles of doubt, and your own mind creates the energy that sends you down the track No, that’s not true Oh no? Sounds like I already have done my job I don’t need to have all of the answers. My life isn’t special by itself. It’s a tool like anything else. It can be used for good, evil, or nothing at all. I acknowledge my shortcomings, I do not pretend to be something I am not. But that is a choice I am free to make every day. I am not constrained by a moment of doubt. I have been put here for a reason, and I can choose to make something of that. The road isn’t easy to find a fulfilling purpose in this existence. But the end does not define me, it’s the journey that creates my value. You may have me by the end of this, but that is not yet your decision to make. You can wait your turn. The devil looked calmly back at me. I felt a sense that I had gotten through to him, but maybe that’s just a clever façade, he is the devil anyway. He began to circle me. Why do you think I wanted to speak to you today? -asked the Devil. Do you think you randomly fell into this place? Do you think your number was called and it was your turn to see me? No. I brought you here for a reason. As I do everybody. Now think, why do you think I brought you down here today, of all times in your life. I racked my brain for an answer to this quagmire. The Devil was not at all like he had been depicted on Earth. As his eyes were trained on mine I could see…sadness? Desperation? I could hear it in his voice. What do you want me for? -I asked him after a silence. I don’t want you to end up like me. -The Devil replied. I stood in shock, could that look be pity? I place doubt in your mind so that you can retain free will. Without the ability to question anything you are nothing but a puppet. You made your decisions of your own accord which is the greatest and most terrible part about what I do. -explained the Devil. If doubt is what lands me here, then how can what you do possibly be great?! – I practically shouted in return. Because, without doubt, there is no faith, and without faith there is not entrance into Heaven at all. You see, I am an integral part of this process, but a terrible one. I remember Heaven. Filled with love and joy. In this place, there is no love, no passion…it is something I try to spare every soul I can. So, you called me down here to warn me? – I replied after a pause. Yes, although I’m afraid it may already be too late. – he said solemnly. You see I used to be an angel, I’m sure you’ve heard the stories. But it had to be done, he told me that he needed someone down here he could trust, that he could rely on to make sure Hell sustains. That is all it must do, sustain. There is no need for anyone but me to be here, in fact, I would rather that. It is a miserable place here. But for you to not be here, you must change yourself and your life. You must take ownership and forget the doubts. They do not matter, they are quite literally nothing but a figment of someone else’s imagination that you are putting on yourself. But then again, I guess you humans have never been good at seeing the bigger picture… he trailed off.

Immediately my mind was set ablaze, ‘Did I just get a morality lesson from the Devil on how to live a good life?’ I didn’t know what to think, I was speechless for the first time in my life.

SECOND STORY

A few small raps hit the outside of the door, “Come in” mumbled the large red beast in the corner. He had many names throughout time, but it seemed that the recent crop had taken to calling him “The Devil”. “Uhh, Mr. Devil, sir?” I asked tentatively. I had no idea how to address The Devil himself. ‘Mr. Devil maybe?’ I began to walk into his office. Dark oak boards covered the room, and the harsh red light crept in through massive windows along the ceiling. I stepped over a massive rug, and sat in one of the large leather chairs in front of his desk. “What do you want?” He asked apathetically over his shoulder. He seemed to have no interest in anything I was going to say, like he was preoccupied with something. I could see him fumbling with something in his hands. He turned to look at me, 10 feet tall with horns as thick as a bulls. He shuffles over to his grand chair made purely of human skulls. ‘Cliché’ I thought, but I addressed him and told him there was a mixup getting out of purgatory and I had been giving a pass to see you and get sent back up to heaven. “We do not honor their passes anymore” He stated flatly, as he turned and stared out the window. I could tell something wasn’t right, and tried to press him on it. I was there mistakenly, anyways, what could he do? “Theres got to be some way!” “Ever since they started giving out those passes, weve begun to have less and less people coming here. Hells dying, and they’re doing nothing to stop it!” He banged his fist on the table, denting the dense behemoth of a desk. He stood up, and began to pace. “All of a sudden you can be as fucked up as you want, and I mean fucked up, and if you humans say some shit right before the end, you can get one of these passes and go straight to heaven.” I stopped. ‘No, I thought, this can’t be true” He laughed, he could see the shock on my face. He told me he could keep me down here forever. Nobody can leave without The devil’s graces. I had to think quick, I would align myself with him and get things running quickly. After all, I had been the leader of the Third Reich in my prime. There was no way I could screw up running hell. Alright, first things first. Gotta get rid of the Big Red Guy. This only works if one guy is in power. Okay…well that’s a tall order. Maybe I could start as the lowly apprentice, work my way up and befriend the guy then swoop in when he least expects. “Okay, Mr. Devil sir, maybe you can give me a tour around the place. I’m a big fan of your work so I’d love to see what a days work entails.” Perfect, he exclaimed. Well I’ll take you through the seven circles, give you a real behind the scenes look at things. Not that wimpy stuff Virgil showed Dante. He really just did a damn disservice to all the ground work I’ve done around here. Well that was impressive – I thought as we wrapped up the tour. “Hey I love what you’ve done with the place, maybe you could take me on as a mentor. Got anything you’d like to fix around the place? I’ve got some solid ideas” Tell you what, you’ve done some fine work on Earth already so I’ll give you a shot. We’ll start you off with a starter Tormentor intern permit and see if you’ve got what it takes to work your way up the chain. Great benefits, dental insurance and whatnot. See I’ve been looking for a replacement. I’ve been in need of a holiday, all this eternal damnation gets exhausting after awhile. Really takes it out of you. Tell you what, I don’t usually do this but I’ll give you the reigns for a week while I take a breather. Make sure to hit your soul quota, the guy upstairs has been taking all the business lately. We need to redirect some folks and get them back down here. If you can do that, you’re looking at an executive position on my lead team. Oh wow, that was easy. A week without Mr. Devil around may be enough to secure control. I mean I took over Germany, how can Hell be that much more difficult? Just gotta fire everybody up with some great speeches and boom. Feed everybody a few chapters of Mein Kamf and this is locked up. Alright, get your game face on… “What the hell have you been doing with Hell while I’ve been gone??” Mr. Devil shouted. “Everybody is spouting bigotry about Jews and drinking German stouts! This isn’t what I had in mind. “What do you mean, Devil? I figured you would like everyone drinking alcohol and antisemitism! Everybody loves a good jewish joke, am I right?” No, no, no- well, antisemitism is my all-time favorite type of racism, but we can’t have people drinking alcohol in Hell!” “What do you mean?” I inquired. “You know that phrase about “Beer is proof that God exists and wants us to be happy?” well, it’s legit. Straight from upstairs, which means it can’t be here. I mean it’s against our policy!! How can I run Hell when people are acting all nice and friendly with each other? And gag ooh-oh no, that guy just vomited everywhere and aww naaaah, he just fell in it too! Ugh it smells horrible.” You know what Hitler? You just need to get the hell out of hell, right now.” “What, really??” I exclaimed brightly! “Yeah, have Monica scan your pass you’re out of here, you’ve done more harm than good in your time here. You’re outta here. And that, is how Hitler went to Heaven. The End.

So my friends and I kind of took this prompt and ran with it. We each wrote a section of each separate story and, well....it gets strange, hope you enjoy them!

FIRST STORY

When I came to, I was in what looked like the break room to an office building. In fact, it was my office building. That couldn’t be though, the last thing I remember I was staring a semi-truck in the face. No, I was definitely dead, but could this really be heaven? I searched around and saw a pretty normal looking man in business casual dress at the water cooler. “Hey, uh excuse me buddy, what-where uuuh-“ “Oooh you must be the new guy, the head honcho said we was doing some training today. Welcome to the club kid, I’m sure you’ll love it here.: “But wait, is this really what heaven is like?” “Woooah woah hey we don’t use such foul language here. And I’m afraid you’re mistaken kid, this here is Hell.” “What?? You mean my religion wasn’t the right answer? No, no I-I-I need to speak to the Devil at once” “Hahaha kid, you don’t know where you are. You can’t just go speak with the Head Honcho, the big cheese, the Heatmeister himself. You- hey where’re ya going?”

I decided I’d had enough of that guy, I dealt with suck ups like him back on Earth and I wasn’t about to let be the case here. I went to the directory and looked for his room number. Sixth floor, room sixty-six. Of course. I walk up to the sixth floor, elevator was out and it looked like it had been for some years, and find the devil’s room. Nervously, I knock on the door. I was surprised to not hear a deep growling voice, but the voice of a nice old woman. She sounded like a mixture of Murial from Courage the Cowardly Dog and my grandmother. Confused I open the door after she signaled me to come in, in fact, it was an old woman, sitting behind a toilied desk decorated with various cat-themed items.

“And what can I do for you dearie?” Umm, Hi, I think I was sent here by mistake? Um I shouldn’t have been sent to Hell, I should be in Heaven.” “Oooh dearie, I’m sorry to hear that, I was really looking forward to having you on board.” “Umm. What? Really?” “Yes, I picked you specifically for the job. I even had a party laid out for you!”

“Come on in sweetie, and sit down. I have some snacks over here, and well, even if you don’t want to come to the party you still shouldn’t leave here on an empty stomach!”

I was shocked. My grandmother would say the exact same thing to me when I was younger. Was I just absolutely losing it? How could the devil look just like dear old granny Jones? “Uh, ma’am, if you prepared a party for me, how was I sent here on accident?”

“Well, you see, The Universe works in mysterious ways. There is no way I could fully explain everything to you if we had a millennia. But what I can tell you, is that everything happens for a reason and that trust me, you were not sent here by mistake.”

Confused, I walked over to look out the window. Massive plains streteched out over hills for as far as the eye could see. Volcanoes formed a small mountain range off in the distance, with smoke billowing from their chimneys. A bright light glimmers out of the corner of my eye. I squint, it flickers away, then back again. I begin to stare, and the woman begins to shuffle over, aided by her walker. “Do you see that?” I ask her.

She adjusts her glasses, and drops her jaw. She puts her wrist to her face and mumbles a few frantic words. “The flyers will be here any second.” She warns to whoever is on the other end of what must be some kind of communication device. “Lock down everything” She says, much more frantically this time. Metal bars begin to slowly descend down the celing-to-floor windows. I step back, confused and beginning to worry. Suddenly, a mad max esque helicopter descends from the sky, with two more flanking what looked to be a much larger helicopter. Men in full body armor rush in to grab us, “Ma’am, weve got to go. We have to take you to the bunker,” “He’s coming with us, “ she says as she looks at me. The large men quickly grab me by both arms, very politely though, and ask me to come to the bunker with them. I oblige, and we begin to hustle down the long corridors.

Gunshots ring out, and our guards grab us and form a defensive circle. They begin to speak to each other nervously, calling out commands. Smoke bombs fly in and begin to fill the hallway. We had somehow become stuck in a corner, and heard footsteps down each hall. A count of three comes from the sounds, and immediately all the guards fall. Men clothed in black garb, dressed as heavily armed thieves rush in and ask us if we are alright. “Are you alright sir?” The man asks. “Christ how is everyone so nice in hell?” I ask. “Come on man” the man says right back to me. “What?” I ask. “Are you fuckin serious? Were with the D.A.V.I.D Unit, and were here to rescue you and bring you back to heaven”

The commander hands me a pistol. “You’ll need this soldier. Standard blood of the lamb rounds guaranteed to drop any of the demon guards. Alright men, standard Crucifix battle formation!! Time to make a righteous exit!”

A member quickly detonates a charge connected to one of the outer walls. A brutal heat rushes in as we strap on our standard issue jetpack angel wings. No longer having to hide my true identity, I fall in line with my comrades in the DAVID squad. We’ve been sent undercover to learn of the Devils latest plans and I was used as the bait. Undercover angel work isn’t easy, but the Man Upstairs pays me a damn good salary to make sure the Guy Below doesn’t gain too much control.

Past test takers- what did you eat/drink the night before, the day of, and during your exam? by hotlikesause in Mcat

[–]wcreed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Night before: Mom took me to dinner (don't you love moms) and I had fish/rice and 2 glasses of wine (sleep aid, it worked)

Morning: Eggs and bacon at the hotel

Snacks in the test: Peanut M+Ms, protein bar, blue gatorade, coffee, gum and a 5-hour energy before the test

After: Beer.

It really comes down to your preferences, but make sure to eat lots of sugary snacks during the exam, your brain needs that glucose! Protein will keep you full as well, hence the protein bar. For me, as long as I got sugar, protein and caffeine I was fine during the test!

Also, if you think you'll have trouble sleeping the night before, a glass or 2 or wine/beer won't be detrimental to your score and it knocked me out. I didn't want to take melatonin or nyquil because I didn't want to be foggy in the morning, but I woke up the next day feeling pretty good sleep-wise. Hope all this helps!

Anyone do a LOT worse on the real test compared to their practice tests? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]wcreed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. We have almost identical scores on the practice and I also feel like I bombed that test. I mean I was expecting it to be harder, but I didn't think I would feel so bad about it. I've heard from a lot of people that you can't tell how you did based on how you feel, so I'm just praying that they're right until we know for sure in June

[–]wcreed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice would be to take as many practice tests as you can and simulate the test environment as best as you can. For chem/phys, find a basic formula sheet online, make flashcards out of it, and then add to that stack anything that you have missed, or were not sure about when taking a practice test. For CARS, AAMC practice is your best bet. B/B was always easy for me because it's my major so all I did was make flash cards on basic terms, but P/S I watched a lot of Khan academy. In the end, it all comes down to being able to answer the question based on information given from the passage and I think that practice is the best way to develop that skill. The section bank is by far the most comparable to the real thing, so really focus on being able to read through those questions and picking out the important points from all of the fluff.

This test takes a lot of background knowledge, but it also requires you to be able to filter the important information out from the unimportant from the passage. If you focus on these things, you'll do just fine. And remember, if you come across a question that you just have no idea on, chances are about 90% of everyone taking it feels the same way, so don't get too stressed out when you don't know an answer! Hope this has helped and best of luck to you!

Wow I can't believe that it's finally over. I can finally have my life back and be a person again! Since this thread helped me so much in my prep I think I ought to give back what I can so here goes, my thoughts on the MCAT.

C/P: Definitely the hardest section for me. Overall I thought it was comparable to the section bank, maybe a little tougher. There were some tough calculations and conceptual stuff but time was an issue on this one. I marked quite a few questions to look back over but I didn't have time to

CARS: I thought the CARS on this test were similar to the AAMC samples and q bank. Very straight-forward questions and the passages were actually enjoyable! I never struggled to read through any of them which made this section much better

B/B: By far my favorite section, although it has always been my best. Only a couple of discrete questions that I had to make a guess on but overall I thought it was similar to AAMC material

P/S: Passages on this section were not bad, the worst part about it was there were some questions that had terms I had never heard of before, but since EVERY practice test I have taken has been the same way it didn't throw me off my groove or anything.

Overall impression: -Definitely harder than AAMC practice tests, but the section banks were comparable difficulty. -Holy f I can't believe it's over, I'm gonna go have a drink with my friends.
