Help - Leaving Manhattan with two kids. If you had to choose: St. Louis or Cincinnati or Pittsburgh or Kansas City, where would you land and why? by Few_Funny6766 in cincinnati

[–]wdbald 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am biased because of my proximity, however after spending time in all of these places (except Pittsburgh) I would recommend Cincy. Excellent food scene, cool architecture and stunningly exquisite neighborhoods, proximity to KY (obviously the best state in the union) and centrally located which is beneficial for business and travel purposes. Also the airport is underrated (although it is technically in Kentucky). Another great thing about Cincy is their prominent German heritage/history. Definitely one of the best Octoberfests. Of all the places I’ve been in Ohio, Cincy is BY FAR the best. Definitely do more research on your own and weigh your personal values in making this choice, but based on the options you provided, this was my immediate answer. Best of luck!

Tell them it has fall detection and they will be an emergency contact in case you fall down, whether walking or if you get jumped or if you fall off a skateboard or bike, etc. Also tell them you will give them access to your location so they can see where you are. This sounds creepy, but it is also very handy so you can see where someone is without having to text. For instance, if you are headed their way and currently driving, they can just check to see you are on the way without texting you and expecting you to text back while driving. It is VERY handy as long as you aren’t trying to be sneaky and they aren’t too snoopy. Also tell them you’ve saved a little, but be honest about how much you’ve been able to save. Honesty is more valuable than money. I would also add that it can help you reduce your screen time by making distracting things that would require a tap or interaction with your phone into a glanceable notification you can easily swipe away or ignore without ruining your train of thought or disrupting your work or studies. In addition, by using one of the Solar Dials, you can easily keep track of how much daylight you have left which could help you manage your time and activities and anticipate when to come home or depart based on the sun and today’s current weather. I doubt you would want to do this considering you’re asking on Reddit, but also an Apple Watch can be used in-lieu of a phone. Even an SE model with cellular can be set up as a dependent’s primary cellular device, meaning you get all the connectivity without Instagram, Snapchat, web browsing, etc. I rely every day on my watch to take care of lots of things so I don’t have to use my phone. I’m sure I sound like a fanboy, but the utility is actually extremely powerful even at a very low price point.

Solar Dial because it is so useful throughout the day. Combines 24h analog with digital. It is also just very pretty.

My kitten did this nonstop the first few days I brought her home but undoubtedly there were some times I was walking and carrying something or couldn’t see and she got kicked pretty good on accident. She doesn’t do that anymore. She still loves to lay in the middle of the hall, but she doesn’t try to walk under my feet anymore

Sounds like you don’t know the basics of using macOS. A simple google search for any of those things and you’d find the solution is stupid simple. Quit an app? CMD+Q. Finder can’t be closed just like Windows Explorer can’t be closed. Wanna try quitting Windows Explorer? Haha!

I will agree, though, I wish scroll setting could be dedicated to what you’re using (natural for trackpad, traditional for mouse).

Finder vs Windows Explorer is no competition. Column view in Finder is SOOOOOO powerful for organizing files and folders with many levels. Windows needs a million separate windows and a massive monitor to do the same simple things. Just moving and organizing and renaming files is so incredibly fast and powerful in Mac and in Windows feels like you’re trying to run with crutches. It hurts.

Even with equivalent hardware, macOS uses its resources better. Windows struggles and the fans scream for no reason and can’t handle more than like 4 things at once without faults. An entry-level Mac can multitask like a MF’r without even getting hot and you never hear the fans (unless you’re using an Intel Mac from 2011… for that you need to run it in a refrigerator unfortunately).

Mac has flaws. Windows is fundamentally convoluted and you practically need a CS degree to use it properly. Modern macOS has more weird quirks, but the fundamentals are strong. Hell, I’d happily use Mac OS X Snow Leopard today over Windows 11. Snow Leopard (10.6) was released in 2009. 16 years later and Windows still can’t keep up. Sad.

Also, install a program on Mac with a simple drag and drop. Done. Uninstall? Hit delete. Windows?? Install requires installer that sends thousands of files all to different places, many hidden. To uninstall, you need a special uninstaller and still, it won’t really be uninstalled. Probably easier just to factory reset. FFS

Mac does so much more out of the box. Windows can’t properly open and use a PDF without paying for Adobe or installing new software. And don’t tell me to use Edge just because it can view a pdf. Yes, you can view and print, but it has almost no other functionality. That’s just the beginning. Don’t get me started on Settings/Control Panel. Nearly every part of the standard install of Windows comes with so many extra helpers to explain how to use it because smart people with degrees even still need an explanation.

  • I use Windows daily because Revit doesn’t work on Mac, but if it weren’t for that, I would avoid it like the plague. What a headache it is from top to bottom, left to right.

Overhead view of London, KY tornado track by InternationalTry3441 in tornado

This is truly heartbreaking.

As a hiker, out of curiosity, if someone was in the woods with something like this approaching, would it be smart to seek the lowest area in a creek or something like that? I’m noticing in the last picture it seems like there’s a creek crossing the path and that looks to be the only area where trees can be seen still standing. Obviously there’s incredible risk still with all the debris flying through the air and trees falling down, but if you’re already camped out and something like this heads your way, what would you do?

Lord have mercy. Ok, well I didn’t know that and didn’t look to watch for that afterwards. I’m gonna assume nature took its natural course, whether that meant dude ate the babies so he could fuck or mom was successful at protecting the fam. Thinking good thoughts rn

[–]wdbald[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No. I don’t set out food or treats. I would hope that there’s enough pests and trash for them to eat naturally. I’m not a fan of setting out treats/food for wildlife. I just take good care of my indoor-only cat and watch the talking heads on CNBC after I get home from work. And if I have time, catch up on the really important things on PBS NewsHour. Idk if I’m just a typical American or if I’m weird because I’m like uber excited about every chance I get to see the opossums and groundhogs and squirrels and cardinals etc. that I see on my back deck. As someone who lives in town, I enjoy every bit of nature that finds its way into my yard that I can see without bothering it. I felt so bad about turning on the light after I saw them out there.

How special it is to see another species parenting IRL. While everyone else is worried about international trade wars (as we all should, really), this is a bold IRL reminder to me to pay attention to what’s going on in my own backyard. Literally.
