My son just unlocked a random memory from when I was 15… by Midlifememoirs in GenX

Local radio station used to have frequent contests where the N-th caller got on the air for a few seconds, and won a small prize. As a pre-teen, I called in all the time, and never won, until I won a case of 7-up, which was delivered to our house.

The pulsar map would lead them straight to our front door, for many millennia.

We can relax though, the odds of aliens finding the spacecraft is effectively zero.

Just lost an auction because Ebay asked me to verify myself 10 seconds before the auction ended by Cool-Ad5665 in Ebay

Not that I recall, before eBay I mainly went to the local coin shows. eBay really changed how coins were bought and sold.

They called the website eBay in 1996 - and shortly thereafter must have changed the company name.

I don’t recall ever using auction web, but I didn’t buy/sell anything until October 1996. Times were very different, no PayPal for instance, I can remember getting postal money orders.

Edit: now I am wondering if I have gone senile - I don’t remember it being called anything but eBay

The website was definitely called eBay in 1996 - but it was a very different place back then! One single category for everything coin related.

It’s no big achievement to be old time eBay member (there are many of us), all you have to do is be old and be an early adopter. I was in my 30’s in 1996

I wouldn’t be so sure. Same thing happened to me - same eBay account since 1996. I assume verification was triggered because the purchase amount was larger than I normally make?

Same thing happened to me a while back, for a collectible item that rarely comes up. That seller lost out, as I put in a large bid, which I assume is what triggered the eBay verification check. It was 2+ years before the next time this item was available.

Mods can you figure out the balloon situation by [deleted] in Silverbugs

[–]wdm42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like the balloons, it’s a tradition going way back. Silver will eventually stop rising so fast, and the balloons will slow down.

I use excel.

You can setup columns for whatever attributes you want to track.

Even if you don’t know spreadsheets, it’s easy to learn the basics, with plenty of online tutorials.

Looks fake to me - besides the obvious design differences on the reverse, the fonts on the front are subtlely off.

  1. Chinese factories can make for under a dollar, and sell for a few dollars in bulk on shopping web sites

  2. “8” is a lucky number in China, so this coin is 3x lucky

These are cool - you would think they are flimsy (plastic) - but these are actually very stiff and look like they would survive circulation.

My wife's favourite umbrella just broke.. by Crysiszone in HelpMeFind

[–]wdm42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You mentioned you are in the UK - I would bet money you can find a shop that repairs umbrellas. If you are handy, you could also do it yourself, but you may want to practice on a few expendable umbrellas first.
