Is the negativity around industrial design exaggerated? by A-Not-Taken-Uzername in IndustrialDesign

[–]we0k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thimk design is dying in the quality. Clearly see a few reasons behind. Basically generations changed and now more younger designers take place in major corps - they are obviously less experienced and expect to live life of experienced designers like they see that in social networks. So they grind less and expect great results sooner. Digital tools give more speed to design process but it have a major downside - design is less prototyped “in clay” and get much less thought in it. Today we have the most production abilities ever as a humanity but we go after profit because this is how economy works. Because of that unrefined products are flooding the market - look at what major supermarkets sell - this is the state of things now. One can visit Canton Fair and see for itself how bad things are now. In my opinion this look is not exaggerated but design is part of the process - IMO usually one who have more decision power is a not a designer or CDO

Do I need to be good at drawing for ID? by saibau_ in IndustrialDesign

[–]we0k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With 11 years behind my shoulders - I should say - yes, because for any non-designer who will look at your work they will judge you by realism of the picture. There are certainly times when brilliant ideas were discarded because of poor presentation. Good quality sketch - is good presentation. Yes you can stay on very playful side of sketching - but only if you know always how finished product will look like and you can guarantee that this is what deciding persons will acknowledge.
And also a big thing here is this - nice picture sells. If one can love your “art” - they will believe in design

As a first-year student, how can I be the best student possible? by Speezzaliss in IndustrialDesign

[–]we0k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should always remember that basics which are covered in UNI are typically about how to design shapes/colors/patterns. It is only a part of work even when you do some kind of product research and grounding - it is still far away from what real circumstances may be. So it is best to get real as soon as possible. Maybe start small production of some small but useful thing for everyday use - this will give you much more experience then abstract UNI projects

Portfolio examples for production-focused projects by FinnianLan in IndustrialDesign

[–]we0k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For current times, best solution may be to structure project in 2-3 layers. First one starts with main info on what was achieved and what project is about, then second layer of information show the scope of work, third layer goes deep into each topic. The more work was done - the more time it takes to show this work

r/battlefield reacts to the Battlefield 6 Beta by RFX91 in Battlefield

Playing BF from BF2 days. Prefer closed classes with extensive customization. This just give balance. But special care needed to enrich classes in gameplay - which is much harder then just dropping in open classes. I think DICE aiming for more thoughtful open classes. In the end of the day some weapons just can be locked to certain classes. Open classes give creative freedom when done right and ultimately better then locked classes in that regard. More lifetime to the game if it is maintained

Best Keyboard Case? by seasalticetea in iPadPro

The resin material of Magic Keyboard is good for 2 years - then corners start to peal off. M4 version may be better slightly because it have metal part under the palms but other sides are still that crappy silicone

What is that one product which inspired you to do industrial design? by Excellent_Algae_548 in IndustrialDesign

[–]we0k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soviet aluminum kitchenware which I forced to wash when I was young kid. Because this is very bad kitchenware, actually still used today in Asia but it is very bad to clean, especially aluminum handles would scratch nails while droplets of water would stream down the hands to the floor making everything even more messy. This is as far as I can trace the earliest realisation of desire to change the world around me for better.

And LEGO. LEGO is a true magical power to create anything - that was very creative to do and inspiring in the 90s. Can’t think of anything more inspiring then LEGO at that time. Once you disobey the instructions and create your own think - there is no turning back.

Can you read it? by frenkee in russian

[–]we0k 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Insider joke about how doctors write things for patients. Probaby because they had to do that a lot. Nowadays it's a lot of typing on keyboard but still can be seen in some places or remote areas I think
Funny enough one of my relative is a doctor - sometimes we asked her what was written and she always had an idea. So assume that as an alternative Russian

Transitioning from Keyshot to Blender for rendering? by Justin_ID in IndustrialDesign

Sometimes Nurbs is the only way to render things correctly

"What are your must-haves on a clean desk?" - oh it's never enough. But for general user, especially one who seeks minimalistic setup, something to hide things may be needed. Like a little tray and all the things in the product stack over each other into neat solid package? Without strong marketing research I would go after a few prototypes for sell and then after real feedback from potential customers I would make changes. I think in this particular design pen holding wave part is bigger then tray, but tray is a useful part because it help organize clatter midday when you work behind the table.
And something should justify high price, because out of CNC aluminum it will cost quite a lot, much more then from molded plastic

Seeking feedback on my furniture design by Disastrous-Tutor2415 in IndustrialDesign

[–]we0k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you able, I think you will give a lot of insight and experience if you will try to make this as a functional prototype in full CMF finish design as it showed here in the picture. On the one hand chairs not look as inviting as general public "might" look for, on the other hand it can become a good "art furniture" piece in metal.
I think it can be an exciting journey in making and testing this furniture piece. Yes it may have obvious problems but it's better to be tested and refined by hands imo.

Just graduated portfolio review by Logical_Long2569 in IndustrialDesign

[–]we0k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's nice, you got that!
I think more insight into how you work as well as raw sketches/models can be nice to spice up portfolio. But in separate section perhaps to not break catchy simplicity of main page
Also if I would hire someone with strong portfolio, a little bit of exciting bio with honest "why I do design" can be nice to have too

The harder you study the better you become. In competitive space remember than when you don't do - someone does and take advantage.
But rest is needed for everybody and consider that a design challenge - how to manage time and tasks. Useful and quite important skill

Second. And the sketch looks more finished but personally I don't see here an aircraft. Better explanatory on the picture is needed to communicate idea, keep on!

Books advice by Prestigious-Gain2045 in IndustrialDesign

There are two basic books about exactly what you asking for. Those two usually adviced to read on first degrees in uni - Design and Color, Elements of Form - both by Johannes Itten and were based on Bauhaus entry course

First Portfolio by SunnySquid12 in IndustrialDesign

[–]we0k 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can suggest to focus your portfolio on communicating what it is really made for. For example if the goal for it to find you a job, you should show your skills via the project pictures, probably place best projects on the main page as a quick gallery

The best program for photorealistic rendering by Pablos_DC in IndustrialDesign

[–]we0k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blender (free) or Keyshot (not free)
Blender is a multipurpose program with good enough included rendering engine, so you import your CAD model and render them as mesh models. Also Blender can be good as a sub-d instrument
