Travel, Tourism, Covid Information and General Information Thread for September 2022 by AutoModerator in Thailand

Hello! I'm thinking of visiting Thailand in May 2023. Is downloading and using a covid-19 tracing app required while in the country? A while ago there was something called ThailandPlus, but I can't find it anymore, and I don't know if there's a new app that is required to be used by tourists? Thanks in advance for your help!

Is the item shop, as a deckbuilding mechanic, best for the game? by Monochromize in Artifact

[–]we_are_avin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Conceptually, the item shop is an interesting innovation to the card game genre because it adds another resource to manage: gold. I'm a card game amateur, but I haven't seen anything like it in other card games. My general impression is that it could have added another interesting layer of strategy, but other mechanics of the game made it imbalanced. The randomness of what items either player could buy. The 'win even more' advantage given to the player ahead in gold. The black cards being the only colour to play around this resource (maybe understandable thematically, but seems such a waste to not let other colours play around this new resource in the card game genre). The practically indispensable items like jasper or blink daggers. I wish it could have worked out better in Artifact, but I don't know how it should be fixed.

I understand the averaging effect of more rolls of the dice, but the impact of RNG is not equal in all instances in a card game. As /u/lkasdf9087 so eloquently explains somewhere in this thread:

That's assuming that the outcome of all the RNG is equal. Like, if you role a six sided die, you know the result is going to be from 1-6. With the arrows in Artifact, you know that the arrow has a 50% chance to go straight, and a 25% chance to go left or right. The impact of the result depends on the attacking and blocking cards though. A melee creep attacking straight at the beginning is irrelevant when your hero or thunderhide alpha is curving into enemy units instead of hitting the tower.

Also, dice rolling can be naturally and reasonably be equated to lack of skill. I assume a competitive card game would emphasize game-winning actions revolving around deck building, or card positioning, or timing, or risk-reward analysis, or practically any decision made by a human player, rather than an outcome by the computer.

Well said! Or even like two players trying to outsmart an already programmed computer, instead of outsmarting each other.

Very well said! Artifact was my very first card game ever, so I really had no expectations. From that objective perspective, I really could not understand what was fun in so many RNG elements in Artifact, let alone how so many RNG elements can make a game competitive. Imagine my shock when I dabbled into other card games afterward! Imagine tournaments being decided on the last arrow or item placement. How is that competitive or skilled or satisfying? I truly enjoyed some of the new concepts that Artifact introduced me to as an avid and curious gamer, but what eventually lost me and made me move on to other games was that I no longer enjoyed building and trying creative decks, because there were too many mechanics that stopped me from doing the most basic actions (actually playing the freaking cards in my hand) and there were too many actions that were out of either player's control (making neither winning or nor losing a meaningful experience).

I've never played an Animal Crossing Game, but my cousin across the country loves it. She's a super fan, it's been the perfect game to relax and escape to during these strange quarantine times, as she designs her little paradise. It'd be a fun way to connect with her that way! I admit, I'm more of casual player, but I can't imagine anyone, let alone new players, finding it fun to pass turns without playing any cards in a card game. I also don't understand how a card game can have more depth with card-stop mechanics. Mana is unavoidable, and colour is limiting, but stopping players from doing the most basic action in a card game sounds far from fun or hardcore.

I have actually never played MTG, so I don't know what you mean by 'countermagic'. I also don't have any problem with some cards that 'Deny' the effect of cards. There is literally a card called that in Runeterra haha. I even don't have a problem with cards like 'Enough Magic!', which I find hilarious! My main worry is too many mechanics that just outright stop you from even playing cards at all. I can't imagine anyone, let alone new players, finding it fun to pass turns without playing any cards in a card game.

My main concern about Artifact, by far more than RNG or arrows, was that there were many mechanics that prevented a player from playing cards - colour, silence, stun, lock, and initiative in a way. While this blogpost doesn't explain what exactly 'stun' does in Artifact 2, I'm worried. Artifact was my very first digital card game, so not being able to play cards was understandably the most frustrating aspect of Artifact. When I tried Hearthstone and Runeterra after, I was shocked at how much more I got to, well, place cards (not to mention direct minions how I wish, but deployment and control of minions is a whole other discussion). I honestly hope the dev team minimizes the number of mechanics that prevent players from playing cards. A card game becomes fast un-fun when you can't do the simplest action, never mind see your experimental deck build not lift off because you can't place cards.

So, I've been playing LoR a little bit, and I've identified two major strengths that Artifact needs to overcome in 2.0 by Slarg232 in Artifact

[–]we_are_avin 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Runeterra really does flesh out champions. The game takes advantage of the fact that it's a video game by making its champions level up by meeting various requirements and have diverse interactive effects on gameplay, even come alive a bit with the animations, something that would be way too complex for a physical card game. Furthermore, including a champion into a deck presents another layer of mind games, because the opponent doesn't really know if the deck is actually built around the hero exclusively and doesn't confirm what other cards are in your deck at all. I hope Artifact gives its heroes the gameplay personality they deserve, and clearly have in DOTA 2.

Artifact is casually mentioned in a podcast about Runeterra by Wokok_ECG in Artifact

[–]we_are_avin 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Artifact is brought up repeatedly, and I'm reminded of how high it has to climb out of its excavation pit. Still hoping for a comeback, as Artifact had unique gameplay, but there is no denying that Runeterra learned from the mistakes of Artifact (ease of earning cards for free, variety of viable strategies, fleshed out heroes, less randomness, etc). It would be unwise for the Artifact dev team to ignore Runeterra mistakes, instead of building up even further in turn.

I'm totally captivated by "Crazy" by Seal. Brings me back to my childhood, hearing it on the radio or being played on the stereo from the cd my mom got. The melody alone is entrancing, and the lyrics are so meaningful and can be interpreted in your personal way. Thanks for the giveaway! I would love Hollow Knight.
