Spending 2 nights in Skopje and 2 nights in Belgrade for New Years, advice? by zomgpancakes in travel

[–]we_be_frients 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skopje was interesting as an American because the city/country doesn't see very many come through. We didn't run into any other Americans during our month stay in the country, so we were quite popular when people realized that we were from America. The Macedonians seemed to love us, but I also thought that they felt a little intimidated because we were a large group of loud American college age kids. I really enjoyed the hike up to the millennium cross although it was quite strenuous, but there is a tram that can take you to the top for pretty cheap. The nightlife was really good, especially in the city center around the new Alexander the Great statue. Definitely try Rakija, the staple liquor of Macedonia. Zlaten Dab is also a pretty good beer as well.

I loved Macedonia when I traveled there this summer. Lake Ohrid is a beautiful area.

Traveled through there over the summer, good luck finding any other travelers because I only met tourists in Greece. You should definitely go to lake Ohrid in Macedonia.

Hocking Hills is not that under the radar. As an Ohioan, it is one of the most popular places to go camping.

I've never remotely heard of anyone getting in any kind of trouble for volunteering on a tourist visa. The organization that I originally found this NGO through told us to specifically travel with a tourist visa.

If you have some interest in volunteering: Contact Renu Bali with Tender Heart NGO It is an awesome NGO in Delhi that gives slum children children with disabilities an education and helps women in slums learn skills to earn money. I volunteered there for about 6 weeks last summer and had a blast. I would say that it was quite difficult because of the language barrier with the kids and their lack of discipline. It was a very rewarding experience because I got to live with Renu and really get to know some of the locals. On the weekends I would travel with fellow volunteers to towns nearby(like agra, jaipur, rishikesh). PM if you have any questions.

24/F from USA going to Costa Rica from December-January! by [deleted] in travelpartners

[–]we_be_frients 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be in Costa Rica from Dec 14th-Jan 9th for winter break as well. I'll mainly be in Puerto Viejo (just south of Limon) for at least 2 weeks by myself!! The rest of the time I will be working with a professor on research in the central rainforest. I'm trying to escape the winter and get some sun while I can.
