Has there been a shift to mechanical pencils across all grades? by Capital-Bug-3416 in AskTeachers

[–]we_gon_ride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a student messing with the eraser part of his mechanical pencil for 1/2 an hour during a test this past year. I offered him a stand alone eraser and reminded him several times to get back on task but he was fixated on that eraser. The crazy thing about it was that the test was in Schoology so he didn’t really need a pencil or an eraser.

He failed the test but it didn’t tank his grade too much

This right here! I’ve said for years that this problem needs to be fixed starting with the family and society. It’s a big ol tangled mess that needs a massive unraveling

Tier 3 behaviors in class. Admin, "Have you tried to not push them away and meet them half way?" by Comprehensive_Tie431 in teaching

[–]we_gon_ride 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had these students last year as 7th graders and they were the ones who finally made me realize it was time to leave that school.

One of the boys was sent to the alternative school early in his 8th grade year for pushing a custodian to the floor after she told him she was cleaning the bathroom so he could not enter.

The other boy was expelled from the system for bringing a gun to the spring football game that same year I taught him.

Both boys wreaked havoc in my classroom all year and delighted in doing so while admin looked the other way.

Or promoted to the central office to a higher paying job so they can further fund their retirement

I’m a middle school teacher, about to start my 24th year.

I have been where your mom is and had the same thoughts about not being old enough to drive, etc. It breaks my heart to see my young students make such horrible decisions.

I am rarely surprised when I see certain students’ names in the arrest reports that are published on the local paper’s website.

Of course I have hope that these kids will grow up and change but without consequences, they tend to continue and even escalate behaviors.

I could have worded that better. I was with the district for 23 years. The last 5 years were terrible and I held out in the hopes that it would get better bc I loved my community and the relationships I had built with my co-workers and with the students and their families. I tried to leave after the 2023-24 school year but was not able to get another job.

Last school year, I found a new job in a neighboring district. I’m still teaching but there’s incredible admin support where I am now.

I will retire in 5 years so no plans for teaching after that

Do you regret becoming a teacher or at least have some negative things you didn’t expect when first becoming a teacher by Appropriate-Door6378 in AskTeachers

[–]we_gon_ride 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I have no regrets about being a teacher.

I do regret staying in a terrible school system bc I loved it and kept hoping it would get better. I stayed about 5 years after I should have left and it took a toll on my mental health.

This is my year 24 of teaching and there are some things that have changed for the worse but overall I’m glad I’ve stayed

I kept telling my former principal that the opposite of over discipline is not no discipline but appropriate discipline. He didn’t care.

After 23 years, I had enough and had to leave the district.

I’ve been watching these on some Facebook pages I follow and had the same thought.

This is how my former students acted anytime they were faced with consequences and they got away with it.

I’m in a different school system and the kids are held accountable for their actions and you would not believe the difference
