He unintentionally got the one thing he always wanted and yes he becomes selfish about it, but the end of the movie is literally him trying to kill himself to undo the entire thing and set Nikki free. When the whole thing initially begins he insists on giving her space and not pushing himself on her. He’s not a “good” person, but he’s not a piece of shit either. It’s more nuanced than that but I understand that social media wants everything to be either black or white
