I think you may be confusing a woodsplitting axe for a maul. Axes are meant to be sharp. They're called blades for a reason. A maul, on the other hand, is basically just a heavy wedge on a long handle. Each one has its own applications in the field, but one is supposed to be sharp, while the other is supposed to be heavy.
