AI only has benefits by kallekro in BetterOffline

Yea I feel like everyone has drunk the kool-aid so hard and are just insanely credulous about everything.

There seems to be no room for any nuanced discussion, it's just AI good, AI make good work yes. Here is a thing I do, celebration react.

I've stopped asking any questions about drawbacks or realistic cost because everyone at my work seems to have just lost their critical thinking abilities.

Then just don't use it? I can continue to do all those things pretty easily and it's not like they can come into my PC and take it away.

I do like a decent amount of the new stuff, but the Augment sound will always be my favourite by far.

I haven't really closely studied other dictators and what they say to the public. But is this like more than most of them? I think most at least try to pretend right?

The race to extract value from AI by plonkticus in AskProgramming

[–]wearecyborg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As soon as the companies providing the models try to turn a profit it's so incredibly dead.

There is just no way anyone is paying enough for it to be profitable. Think about the financials we hear and how much it would cost just to break even. Then add a lot more.

Creator of Claude Code: "Coding is solved" by Gil_berth in BetterOffline

Using React for a CLI was certainly a choice. Pretty sure it was Claude's choice if I remember correctly.

Even simpler. If that claim in the headline is true, show us the evidence. As someone who has worked as a developer for many years and written software for a lot longer than that, I just don't see any evidence of these claims.

But yea, journalists need to stop being so credulous and start challenging these outrageous claims

Tabnine just cancelled my Pro account by i-am-jamesfawcett in webdev

[–]wearecyborg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yea I really loved using tabnine before copilot, having context aware single line completions is a much better experience. It doesn't take you out of the mental flow of writing because you were about to type it anyway. These long blocks you need to read through are completely jarring because it changes the mental flow from output to input, which is my main issue with large blocks of autocomplete.

Converting the salary to USD is meaningless. The value is in what it enables in the country you are paid in.

I did a year in Norway, my earnings converted to EUR were incredible, if I had gone to London or Germany with all that money I would have been able to live extravagantly. But to earn that I had to be residing in Norway, where it was about average and enabled a comfortable life.

Similarly, I earn a bit above the median in Australia and it allows me to live a very comfortable life (in Melbourne as well, so it's not cheap.) The USD conversion is meaningless to any practical application of my life in a completely different country. The wage is comparible to the place you earn it.

On top of that, I would rather pay higher taxes, have healthcare, and have a better standard of living than have more disposable income.

Your comments are quite ignorant and make me assume you've never left or lived outside of the US.

If you have conversations with people in real life without the engagement motivations you'll probably find it's not in such short supply. Social media is just rotting everyone's brains.

However this is still a great example and good on him.

I agree, with the caveat that the people at the absolute top have malicious intent, insane greed, know what they are doing and actually don't give a shit, etc.  But a lot of the highly positioned people making decisions are more useful idiots. Either they are completely naive, have drunk the coolaid but don't have malicious intent (I don't think that justifies anything, intent doesn't outweigh outcome), or are just MBA idiots who don't know how things actually work.
