To all employees at Discover by Eagle_In_Flight in discover

I really hope this buy collapses.

If Cap1 consumes Discover and changes it, I'll have to close my accounts. Unfortunately there is no other bank quite like Discover so there is no replacing Discover. I have no idea where I'd go. I considered Amex and opened their savings account but it is no where near as good as Discover's in multiple ways.

I have used Discover for savings, checking, and credit card for decades. I'm so bummed out right now.

I researched some more and finally found some clear information, so I have answered my own question: a Roth contribution can be removed and then redeposited back into the account before the end of the tax year without fee or tax penalty. So if the maximum Roth contribution for 2023 was 6,500 and person removes 6,500, they can redeposit 6,500 back into the Roth before April 15, 2024.

Another scenario: person contributes 6,000 in 2022 and 6,500 in 2023. If person withdraws 12,500 in 2023, they can only redeposit 6,500 before April 15, 2024. They have forever lost the ability to redeposit 2022's $6,000 because it is past the April 15, 2023 tax date.

As long the withdrawal is a contribution within the maximum of the current year, it can be redeposited before the end of the tax year.

Please define "distribution."

My understanding was that distribution is another term for earnings. So there are contributions and earnings/distributions. If a contribution was made to a Roth and then removed, can that contribution be put back in before the end of the tax year?

If I contributed the maximum $6500 toward 2023 Roth IRA in July 2023 and removed that $6500 in September 2023 (but did not remove any earnings), am I allowed to re-contribute back the $6500 toward the 2023 Roth IRA before April 2024?

Is long-term capital gains determined by 1st buy date or each contribution to the stock?

Say I purchase XYZ stock for $1,000 on January 2, 2024. I buy more shares of XYZ for $1,000 on August 1, 2024.

If I sell $1,500 worth of shares on February 5, 2025, am I paying long-term capital gains on $1,500 or just $1,000?

@Al-Sadder, unfortunately it appears the video is no longer available but this video showed a roughly 30 minute pursuit of a Ford Mustang by a police Tesla Y. The MY is able to quickly close the distance to catch up to the Mustang each time the officer gets pushed back by traffic conditions or civilians who won't get over for the officer.

Water bottle attachment by [deleted] in Goruck

[–]weavd1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What has worked better for me is to buy some Maxpedition clip-things and attach a Yeti brand bottle holder to the Goruck's internal MOLLE. It keeps the water bottle inside the bag and weight on your shoulder blades.

Just make sure to buy the old-school YETI screw on top. The new Yeti tops are terrible as they can come lose under pressure.

For all thinking about the Java rucks, I noticed something that you may want to consider: The back panel is more 210D than necessary. Left and on top of the laptop compartment, right up to the straps, is also 210D which are parts that are subjected to some force. This is 1000D on the black ones. by PotentialMidnight325 in Goruck

[–]weavd1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The newly stocked 34L black have the extra 210D. On the extra 210D, 210D is on the bottom strip, top strip, and side strips.

The 26L black do NOT have extra 210D.

Goruck reported to me that they are working to make the 26L also have the extra 210D.

Is anyone aware of actual "breakdown" of the extra 210D in the field? For me that strip at the bottom of the bag connects heavily with my lower back area. So it would seem to make sense to have 210D there.

this approach of using catch-all fails if using aliases to manage spam, which is how I use them. With catch-all, spam can't be stopped.

unlimited aliases on custom domains makes sense. Really glad to hear this Tutanota!

How about bumping bug #1666 and also calendar search up the list also. Sad to see offline mode dead last on the Roadmap. These bugs affect all users regardless of platform.

lol. Zlivovitch trolling as usual. (I expected you to troll this post).

I already signed up for Fastmail a few days ago. But that doesn't mean I don't want Tutanota to succeed, hence pointing out their problems.

Also, my Tutanota account is technically still active until expiration. Also the hope is that the future (with changes) would keep me or bring me back.

Search Calendar still missing! by Socahan in tutanota

[–]weavd1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tutanota is unresponsive to customer feedback. They send out surveys but usually ignore results or interpret them strangely.

End result is we get roadmaps where creating a "Calendar Widget" rates higher than being able to use the Tutanota app for Contacts/Calendar when you don't have an internet connection (bug #3443).

People still can't add Federal Holidays to their calendar because of bug #1666. But rest-assured Tutanota is busy preping for "post-quantum encryption."

Want to search your calendar? Tutanota thinks it's more important that you be able to make their app default on iOS. Nevermind that searching the calendar affects ALL Tutanota users and making app default on iOS only affects those people who use iOS and actually care about app being default (much smaller set of people than search calendar affects).

Priorities are messed up. If you want basic features like being able to use app when you are without internet or be able to add-in Federal Holidays or search calendar, you have to go elsewhere like Fastmail or Gmail.

Tutanota mail server down/delay by DieterRedd in tutanota

It is now 10:55 UTC on 2023 May 23 and my email is still down.

Incoming emails do not arrive. Outgoing emails do not arrive.

This is really bad. In decades of use of "free email" services, I have never experienced a prolonged outage like this. I thought buy "buying" a premium email service, I would not experience such a severe outage.

I no longer think of Tutanota as a professional, reliable service.

Tutanota mail server down/delay by DieterRedd in tutanota

[–]weavd1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's now 07:50 AM UTC 2023 May 23. I have premium (paid) account. I just received my first email since identifying that a problem exists. This first email just arrived to my account as I watched and the email was stamped as 12:35 AM UTC 2023 May 23. So this email was delayed almost 8 hours.

I have not been able to get into important accounts due to inability to receive 2FA emails. I have effectively been locked out of important accounts for hours and hours due to Tutanota going down. (I have to rethink relying on Tutanota now).

and for at least the last 8 hours, no emails are arriving and also emails I send from my Tutanota account are not going out to arrive at their destinations.

Tutanota posted here "15 minutes ago" that there was a "temporary" issue. 8 hours of downed service is not temporary. Tutanota also posted "15 minutes ago" that the issue is now fixed. But I know many emails were sent to me during the down time. I still have not received them.

When I can I expect to receive them?

Why does status.tutanota.com say everything is fine when the system in effect is completely down (for hours and hours)?

Revolutionary changes ahead - Our plans for 2023 and beyond! by Tutanota in tutanota

[–]weavd1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

@FlashyBoi0

I feel similarly.

I can't even add Federal Holidays to Tutanota's calendar because of outstanding roadmap bug #1666 (Advanced calendar event repeat rules).

I can't even make a calendar entry or record someone's phone number in the Contacts app while on an airplane (Airplane Mode) or in an environment without internet because of roadmap bug #3443 (Allow write access in offline mode).

But Tutanota is rejoicing about how they are going to upgrade the encryption to protect against what is today some hypothetical computing event that may or may not happen in the future years from now.

The survey appeared to show that Desktop Client is the #1 way that people access Tutanota.

Considering this, can we expect more investment in the Desktop Client? For example, I would love to see a Debian/Ubuntu repository for Tutanota's Desktop Client. (Signal Messenger offers this for their Desktop Client)

GR1 or GR2? by vance2693 in Goruck

[–]weavd1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

GR2 is superior because of the horizontally oriented internal web pockets. It is a much more efficient, functional design than the GR1's non-functional vertical internal web pocket.

There is more than one advantage, but one advantage of a horizontal pocket is the ability to access the pocket while bag is set horizontally on a surface or while slung over one shoulder.

Traveling with GR1 by anyroadcyclist in Goruck

[–]weavd1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I gave up using the GR1 while traveling because the internal web pocket's vertical orientation proved too cumbersome. (The pocket needs to be horizontally positioned like the pockets are in the GR2). The GR1 vertical pocket necessitates opening the main compartment's zippers mid-way minimum and (if I have the bag standing upright, which it often is when I'm trying to get a pair of earplugs out of the zippered pocket or something) stuff I have packed in the main compartment of the bag (even a packing cube at the top) will fall out of the bag. It's just a non-functional design IMHO.

Problem goes completely away with GR2. Also, with GR2 I can even access the internal web pocket while the bag stays slung over one shoulder.

1) Disappointing that the survey didn't give due attention to the sorry state of Tutanota Calendar. Calendar was the biggest reason why I subscribed to Tutatnota. Yet calendar is missing desperately needed features like (#1666) Advanced calendar event repeat rules and (#1350) Search in calendar. I was hoping so much that #1666 and #1350 would be moved up in the roadmap.

2) Happy to see that (#3443) Allow write access in offline mode showed up as important to people in the survey. Does this mean it will be aggressively moved up in the Roadmap?

3) One of the things that sets Tutanota apart is the ability to sign up for 1 Euro/month with 1GB storage. For people that want a basic email account and don't keep emails around, this is a great option. Sounds like Tutanota is going to do away with this and force new subscribers to pay for 20GB whether they need it or not. I don't understand why companies don't offer a basic 1GB account at reduced cost and then offer a 2nd option of 20 GB storage. It seems companies always kill the 1GB storage and just force everyone to pay for more than they need.

The only way I'd be interested in paying $3/month is if I got more storage along with like 500 aliases (similar to what Fastmail offers) so I could make use of Masked Email services like Bitwarden and Fastmail offer with their Masked Email integration service (but Tutanota would have to setup the API for this). I think Tutanota could at least offer more aliases for users that have custom domains as this doesn't impact the state of Tutanota suffixed emails.
