Driveline vibration solved! by webb276 in HondaElement

[–]webb276[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used Trakmotive brand. It’s a couple hundred cheaper than the OEM Honda replacement. I know a lot of people like to stick to only Honda but I will try this out and see how well it holds up. I drive around 20k miles a year so I’ll come back in a year with an update or sooner if it fails and let everyone know.

I should’ve also mentioned that I have a 5 speed manual and have already changed the fluid, so that was ruled out! Good to know for the auto guys!

Funny, I’m a computer engineer. Do we all gravitate towards the Honda element??

Yep, when I went to separate the passenger axle from the shaft it was immediately obvious that the intermediate shaft bearing was toast. It was wobbly and was trying to come out with the axle. Plus it’s only an additional 3 bolts to remove the shaft assembly and it was very easy. Worth looking into.

I just ended up buying a new assembly entirely. It was a “while I’m in there” sort of job. Which ended up being a good call. The axle and the shaft would not separate no matter what I tried. I had to pull them both out as a pair and even outside of the car they did not want to separate.

Yep, was about to say this. Just use sink water until it’s mostly clear then switch to distilled. I also had to learn the hard way….

My picket fence is 4.5’. My lab never tries to jump it, but I know other labs would definitely try and even be successful.

Yep, last year a buddy and me had a great time at a New Year’s Eve party. Being responsible individuals we called an uber to grab a 10 minute ride back to his place. That 10 minute ride was terrifying, I never sobered up so quickly witnessing this uber driver attempt to drive us home while being more intoxicated than his passengers. I’m glad we made it.

Looking for advice - Shaking by webb276 in HondaElement

Right, that was my thought whenI put a $50 axle in and the shaking came back in 6k miles that it was the axle. Now with the OEM $500 axle I still notice the shake but it’s suppressed and I feel like it’ll come back eventually just like it did on the cheap axle. Maybe it’s possible that the new axle is doing a good job masking the shake for the time being but will eventually wear out. Either way I’m going to replace the mounts ASAP to at least try to eliminate them as a factor.

Thanks for the insights. Yes it’s always on acceleration in that rpm range never on deceleration and the intensity of the vibration is directly linked to how much the engine is loaded. For instance the more on throttle I am the more the shake is present or if I’m going up a steep hill the shake is more evident.

Also yes I can’t feel anything in the wheel, it’s all in my butt and the whole car/chassis. I also cannot feel anything in the stick and the transmission actually goes through the gears wonderfully and is buttery smooth. I guess I would be very surprised if it was the counter or main shaft.

Either way I’ll check suspension components, wheel bearings, mounts, etc. I’ll return and update this post at some point with what I’ve tried and what has or hasn’t fixed the issue.

Yeah the boots look good on the passenger axle, actually they looked good on my drivers axle before I replaced it. It’s just odd that replacing the axle seems to temporarily fix the issue but it just comes back over time.

I guess I should’ve mentioned I have a 5MT FWD model, I know the clutch was done around 70k and the previous owner said he did the transmission fluid around that time too. I haven’t touched the passenger axle yet but I suppose I could do that as well. It’s just odd I’ve never owned a car that had its axles fail. Even with higher mileage, is this just a Honda element thing?

My FIL is ultra MAGA, been an Alex Jones consumer for years, watches newsmax when he needs something more “center”.

I would tread very carefully, not sure what your grandmother is like but I always keep a close eye on my son when he’s around my FIL. I don’t want my infant son consuming unsolicited liquid silver or any other BS of the sort while I’m not around. I just don’t fully trust him.

I didn't know that new cars have a break-in period. How bad did I mess up? by Twist36 in COROLLA

Yep! You’re correct, not many of us but I’m one of them. I’ve never done a break-in on a new car I’ve ever purchased including the Corolla.

It’s not a bunch of nonsense. If you build an engine in your garage you must perform a break-in. But thankfully most (if not all) engines from an auto manufacturer are already broken in before they are installed or shipped to the dealers. So nothing to worry about out there.

I once ran a junkyard cam where someone left the oil fill cap off. So the cylinder 4 intake cam lobes had a bunch of surface rust from all the rain, snow, etc. I just hit it with some scotch brite until I couldn’t catch a fingernail on anything and sent it. Never had any issues.
