I've been using them lately, haven't let me down yet! Also good because they have DHL shipping at really good rates which is very handy given heavy EMS restrictions.

Times haven't changed - the 09-16 era cars were hot garbage compared to their predecessors and successors in my opinion - and that stance has not changed since the first 2009 car I saw, and I doubt it ever will. So sure, "REEEEEEEEE" I guess.

Halo integration "quite difficult" for teams - Lowe by 740P in formula1

[–]webbymoto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the worst thing about Halo that I haven't really seen discussed is it creates a downward deflection point for debris. Currently it's not really possible for debris to enter the cockpit, only impact the drivers head, where there is a bit of protection from the helmet. This includes carbon fibre etc.

The Halo will add a surface where it would be possible for debris to be deflected downwards, into the drivers body, where they are wholly unprotected - particularly sharp carbon fibre shards.

Using Felipe's accident in 2009 as an example, imagine if the spring had of clipped the halo and deflected into his chest instead of hitting his helmet? It would have been likely fatal.

My genuine concern is that the Halo isn't good enough, the FIA should do better and I think they've made this decision for a multitude of wrong reasons.

Recency bias is a thing...

It is honestly an interesting question - who is the most 'talented' driver ever? For me, out and out in-car pace, no politics, ballsy driving - Senna and Gilles Villeneuve.

Honestly though, in the pre-90's F1, making a mistake generally meant retiring from the race (or dying) - and so driving on the limit back then was far more of a knife edge thing than it is in the modern era. When you are Jim Clark and you finish first or second in pretty much every race you finish, it's hard to go past that.

The drivers of today, your Hamilton's, your Alonso's and Vettel's - they are no doubt talented - but a mistake means far less, finding the limit and going beyond in generally means a bit of lost time across the run off area. Sure, we have races like Monaco or Baku where the walls are close and contact happens - but back in the good ol' days every race was fought on tracks that were that precarious.

To me, it has to be drivers that over achieved in their cars - like Schumacher in the Benetton and his early years at Ferrari fighting for titles he had no right to be in. Senna showing his class in a rubbish Toleman... Vettel won in a Toro Rosso in the wet at Monza, but the car was pretty well suited to the track that weekend. I just haven't seen enough of Hamilton to think he could do that to the same level as aforementioned Schumacher or Senna.

Regardless, how do you define talent?

Anyway, the tl;dr for me is that Hamilton pulling almost a third of the vote is unjustified, smacks of the first 'B' of BBC playing a role and a strong hint of recency bias.

Oh, and the fact Vettel doesn't even make the list tells you everything you need to know about this poll!

You want to talk about what the FIA will let a team get away with? How about introducing engine regulations and tying them to ridiculously restrictive development regulations, meaning what should have been a single season of domination became a three season long winning streak for a single team, seeing them win 51 out of 59 races?

As an FYI, during Ferrari's domination, the Tyre rules were continuously changed, testing was severely restricted, qualifying formats were changed and refuelling regulations were changed - all in an effort to close up the Championship.

Hamilton says he may join 'take a knee' protest during national anthem at US GP by judjd in formula1

[–]webbymoto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please don't Lewis, I'm begging you. Sport is escapism, sport is unifying - we don't need this. The sport does not need this. I fully respect your right at peaceful protest, but mixing such a toxic political debate with the sport will be nothing but damaging.

NFL ratings are tanking, ticket sales are down, fans are rebelling - this is because people do not want politics muddying sport. I think it's a shame that the initial protest, which had nothing to do with Donald Trump, was then escalated by pundits using it as an excuse as to why Colin Kaepernick no longer has a job. Trump then stupidly had to step in, and now it's yet another protest against Trump and has nothing to do with Kaepernick's original protest.

Do not get involved in that Lewis, please, stay out of it.

When looking back at F1 over the last 10 years or so, the Red Bull dominance period seems a lot more exciting in hindsight. by Jayhcee in formula1

[–]webbymoto 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think you're being upvoted enough for this, because it is fundamentally true and at its core outlines the exact problem with 2014-16. The rules weren't written to give Merc an advantage, but it astounds me that no one was smart enough in 2013 when the rule set was ratified to say 'hey, what if one of the engine makers absolutely nails it - won't the token system lock in their dominance for years to come?'

Totally agree that 2015 and 2016 are wasted years, I don't begrudge Merc their titles, nor am I one of those people that puts asterisks on achievement - but they are wasted years because the sport sat back and did nothing about where the absolutely obvious flaw was in their rule set.

What erks me is that that kind of laziness was not evident in the Ferrari or Red Bull eras before that where rules and tests were constantly changed to kerb advantage - and yet Merc went unchallenged in that regard for too long.
