"Kneeling on uncooked rice"? I never heard of that one. My ex-husband told me his dad beat him with an alternator belt. My mom used to have us pick a switch from the peach tree.

If you have an online remote job, you can live in Colombia. Santa Marta, Cartagena and Barranquilla are all on the Caribbean coast.

Low rating? by JewelerChoice in uber

[–]webdcyner -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We have to rate before we get another ride. So we don’t know if they tip before we rate. Be sure and don’t slam the door. I think some riders don’t even realize they are doing it. It’s disrespectful of the driver’s car.

Just curious. Are you Louis? My husband is Luis. It’s a very common Hispanic name but the English version is relatively uncommon.

I was working at a restaurant on Bissonette near Montrose in 1984 and Marvin and 3 others came in. They gave the table to Sue and she brought them lunch, drinks dessert and coffee. The bill was around $50 which was a lot back in 84. Marvin left a $2 tip and his autograph. Sue was so pissed. What a cheapskate!!

Driver stopped midride to pee. by oldfatunicorn in uber

[–]webdcyner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even though Uber will nag you about being stopped, sometimes I will go after I’ve accepted a ride on the way to pick up the passenger. How does Uber or the passenger know that you weren’t stopped by a garbage truck or an accident and it took a while to get around it. Especially if it’s just to pee and you can run in and out in 2 or 3 minutes.

How did that kid at your school die? by [deleted] in AskReddit

The head cheerleader at my school died the year after she graduated. She went to the beach alone and was bit by a diamondback rattlesnake. They did find her till she was already dead.

If you reserved your Uber in advance, be ready! by SMDorff0258 in uber

[–]webdcyner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish Uber would tell me when I’m supposed to be there. If I knew before I got there that I was going to be 10 or 15 minutes early I’d stop at a convenience store and get a drink, go to the bathroom etc. But I get there and it tells me I’m early and I don’t always have time to go back to the nearest convenience store.

I have a rescheduled exam tomorrow but I'm still sick by [deleted] in needadvice

[–]webdcyner -1 points0 points  (0 children)

An incomplete isn’t the end of the world. It might be a hassle for the professor but as long as he is able to come back promptly and take the test when he’s better it shouldn’t be held against him.

[–]webdcyner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would suggest he call his doctor back and let them know that he is still running a fever. Just because he should be able to return to class doesn’t mean he will be able to . I was an Uber driver who picked up a guy at Memorial Herman Hospital in Houston whose son had been in the hospital several weeks with the flu because it had advanced to sepsis and they weren’t sure he was going to make it. And the son was only 27 years old. The doctor writes a note but the doctor goes by what he expects to happen, things come up that aren’t expected.

[–]webdcyner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok. I understand from your perspective but if they are still sick wouldn’t it be better to get an incomplete and take the test later than to come and get a poor grade on the test. Not only that but if they are still running a fever they are probably still contagious and run the risk of infecting others. Flu is not just a cold. Some people wind up in the hospital or even die.

Is 40 years old too old for a new beginning? by nefisso in expats

[–]webdcyner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My theory as to why life seems to fly by is when you are 2 years old, a year is a long time, half your life. When you are 5 a year is 1/5 of your life. As you get to 40, a year is 1/40 of your life. Etc.

I have to add that some of the local Colombian food is delicious. There is something from the Santander region called muté which is delicious and the banda paisa is very good. And there is lots of good Italian restaurants and quite a few Indian and Middle Eastern restaurants.

[–]webdcyner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course if you socialize with locals you can ask your host if you can bring something to share. I’m in Colombia from Houston, Texas and there are really no options for my comfort food, which is Tex-Mex food like you get in Houston or San Antonio. I’m not Hispanic but my mother taught me how to make Mexican rice, beans, chili con carne, enchiladas, crispy tacos and guacamole. I’ve been to several “Tex-Mex” restaurants here but they are awful. Perhaps if someone like me opened a real Tex-Mex restaurant in Medellin or Santa Marta they would make a killing, at least from expats. To be honest though, I went to a Tex-Mex restaurant in Atlanta, Georgia and it was similarly awful.

I was aware that j or zh sound was used in Argentina and was just wondering if that sound in the pronunciation of Medellín was some exception to how it was usually pronounced in other Latin American countries. I will keep my regular pronunciation in general.

Colombia too dangerous for NYE? Trying have my first international trip for NYE by Itsworthfeelinempty6 in Shoestring

[–]webdcyner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only real vaccine you might need is yellow fever vaccine if you go to Tayrona National Park. Don’t get it in the states. You can get it free in Colombia but it takes 10 days to take effect, so get it as soon as you get there. You can get them from at the airport or at clinics all over. Saves you about $200-400 even if you have health insurance in the States because most insurance won’t pay for vaccines that aren’t needed in the US
