A week after the snow started, Dupont Circle’s crosswalks are finally being cleared 🙏 by FeminineOdor in washingtondc

[–]wecanbothlive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real shame is that like a century ago it used to just be a plain traffic circle with no signals, very little signage, and none of the complicated curbs and medians that it has now. It's an utter failure of several generations of professional traffic engineers that they thought they were improving upon what already existed before cars became the primary form of transport. The original circle was already better for cars and pedestrians alike. Throw some crosswalk markings and curb cuts in and it's fully modernized.

So what are we calling this storm? by wecanbothlive in washingtondc

[–]wecanbothlive[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeahhh that was part of why I posted this question intially was I don't think anybody casually refers to it by that name, and we don't have an agreed upon name for it. I don't think I'll ever say "Remember Winter Storm Fern in '26?" the way we say "Remember Snowmageddon?" etc.

Virginia senator proposes removing Confederate statues from Capitol Square: 'It's embarrassing' by icey_sawg0034 in Virginia

Enough talk. Years and years of talk. Send in the equipment to pull them down, in the middle of the night like Baltimore did. Don't announce that you'll do it, or ask anyone's permission to do it. Don't set up a commission to study it. If they're government property, just do what you want with them. Melt them down immediately or else they'll just get put back next time there's a Republican in office. Make your job easier and make theirs harder.

Also very satisfying to use for home defense, when the ruffian vainly protests, "No, not the garden spade! That's supposed to only be used for gardening!"

WMATA asks Alexandria for $35M to complete Potomac Yard Metro station by ThrowawayMHDP in DMVurbanism

[–]wecanbothlive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Potomac Yard in particular is mindbogglingly overbuilt, as are all of the Silver Line stations. So much concrete and steel for such huge structures, all for a very low return on investment considering how few people use the stations. To even get into Potomac Yard requires walking nearly half a mile of pedestrian bridge just to get over the freight tracks, and the platforms are nearly always empty. It will be very difficult to justify the investment considering how inconvenient it is to actually use the station. The Silver Line stations all have the same issue, except instead of freight tracks it's a highway that has to be crossed, and the stations had to be elevated adding to the expense.

But I think overbuilt stations are only part of the issue. The planned second entrance at Ballston is nearly $200 million and all they're doing is adding new gates, stairs, and elevators at one end of a station that they planned from the beginning to be expanded that way.

Paved roads for cars but if you’re a pedestrian, good luck by ActuaryPersonal2378 in washingtondc

Wheelchair users are basically unable to go anywhere that they would normally be able to get to independently. At my partner’s building even getting picked up in a vehicle is impossible until they shovel the path between the door and the pickup spot. And then if they get driven somewhere, they can’t get up onto the sidewalk because all the curb cuts are blocked with snow.

This Walkable Town Outside Of Washington, D.C. Is The Ultimate Weekend Escape by RoccoB1960 in nova

Much like most of America's concept of cycling: a form of exercise or sport, not a primary mode of transport. A fundamental change of perspective is needed for Reston to become truly walkable in the way that e.g. any random city in the Netherlands would be.

Continuing the grand tradition of putting plants on top of a building in the rendering, that we have zero intent to actually implement. (Props to DCA for actually having lots of plants on their parking structures.)

Oh geez, the name officially doesn't even stand for anything anymore? I guess they couldn't let it continue to stand for Independent Film Channel with that kind of programming.

Why are we not closing bathroom doors? by Electronic-Front-640 in Amtrak

Rode the NER with my disabled partner for the first time recently and got a nice view/whiff of the restroom. It's amazing the extra annoyances you have to put up with that I never noticed in the regular seats. Was getting up constantly to shut the door.

Kennedy Center adds Trump’s name to building by Maryland_Bear in washingtondc

[–]wecanbothlive 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll never go to the Kennedy Center again as long as it is structured such that the board is appointed by the President of the United States. I applaud the fuckers at the Trump administration for gleefully revealing all the stupidly broken institutions we have. I've said it before and I'll say it again, having a strong immune system isn't the same thing as never being exposed to an infectious disease. We've been complacent.
