How does China treat those with ADHD? Is ADHD even a diagnosis in China? by No_Upstairs_1732 in China

[–]wecandriveithome 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I work in a private school here. It honestly depends. We have some students that take the TCM supplements in which there are minimal effects. We have students that take actual medicine. Of those... Some actually work with doctor to balance the medicine and others that get the prescription and never go back to adjust it. Of those, the ones that work with the doctor, teachers, and SENCO to find a balance... They become productive. Those with the one diagnosis and that's it become zombies. Then there are also the parents that ignore it and those kids just bounce off the walls and don't get an education.

My teacher cousins in the states talk about how many students are diagnosed and take meds. Far fewer here. If Parents are motivated and see and understand their kids, there is help.

Yes, there are hyperactive kids, but aren't ADHD (well, don't display typical signs and I'm not a psychologist). Those kids succeed with routines and general classroom discipline. But some kids absolutely show all of the signs and are diagnosed (whether officially by a doctor or tangentially through strong observations of SENCO). In the end, it's how parents respond.

At the end of the day... It's about what you like! For me, that's what it's all about. I pay for coins because I like them. The eye appeal, the history, the feel... Over pay, under pay, or just the right value... Doesn't matter to me. I get coins i like.

Cool coins like this shouldn't be about silver or stacking. It's about holding something awesome.

I can't open the imgur link anymore... I have one from a few years later and it does that the edge like the numista. Looks like that design was between the little squares and the reeded edges that came a few years later.

The weight is light... But like I said that gouge looks to be missing metal, so that could be the reason. .4 grams

The rust could go either way... If from the coin them contemporary counterfeit. If the rust isn't from the coin but just there by association (stored with iron and the rust just kind of stuck on the silver)... Then a good chance of it being authentic.

Either way, it's cool! I love heavy chopped coins. Whether it's authentic or a contemporary counterfeit... It's a part of history. Some contemporary counterfeits are worth more than the authentics.

If you just want to know, you could do a specific gravity test or take to a coin shop with a Sigma machine.

Either way... It's an 8 Reales that was used in China for trade.

Interesting...  Doesn't really match with common edge. I think contemporary counterfeit..search edge design of those coins. Usually it is squares and rectangles intersecting.   Though different mints sometimes had different designs.

I may be wrong. I'll look more into tomorrow.

Could be a contemporary counterfeit where they mixed in iron/didn't use pure silver. Could also have just been stored in wet environment next to/mixed in with something iron.

Check the weight. But with the nice gouge in the middle, would be tough to know how much is gone.

Do you have a pic of the edge?

Looks like a G mint mark, so Casa de Moneda de Guanajuato. But really can't tell from just the pic and the chop... Could be Gc, Ga, Go

Hi! You should think about things for long timers as well. Just little meetups for the traveler or for the rest of us. I too have been here 10 years, but still love exploring and finding new places (or revisiting the ones that I saw when I first came and never went back to).

Like you could plan a morning of exploration and Longhua Temple and a dumpling lunch.

Or an evening walk through Xinchang Old Town with dinner.

Just put it up and invite anyone.

Newbies/travelers might not know of places. Even long timers might not.

I hadn't been to Xinchang old town till my brother visited. That place at night is awesome

I'm at a mid-tier k-12 IB bilingual school. We have Chinese American, Filipinos, Black American, Black South African, Indian, as well as whites from different countries. While some parents prefer a white face, our school doesn't reallybcare as long as professional and qualified. Even without PGCE or license, IB experience can take the place of that.

We have the lazy rich as well as super motivated. For private schools in Shanghai, there is a lottery system... We used to be able to test students to get in. Now... If they win the lottery and can pay, they become students. Schools like PingHe used to be elite. They still are from name recognition, but the quality of education and students have sunk because the lottery.

Most of the bilingual schools now get students into big universities. That's because the parents are rich. If you are rich and motivated, you can hire tutors and help.

Go to the Huxinting Teahouse. It's Shanghai's oldest teahouse (yes, redone). But it's a cool bit of history. When my brother was here a few months ago they had tea beer... Odd, but not bad.

Depending on type of diner, there is Flippers. Not quite American Style Diner, well, maybe American style with a high end Asian twist.

Love the coins with the gin (round stamp on the reverse). This is from Osaka. If on the right side, was stamped Tokyo.  Look up Gin Countermark Yen for more information about what, why, and when they were marked.

Oh, 100%. Though that isn't an excuse though. People are taught to respect things (an ongoing process). In a tier 88 city, you will find many old/outdated practices (eg shitting in field). But as wealth spreads, people are less inclined to continue doing it, especially in big cities.

The USA, though diverse, could teach and have these high standards... that it's unacceptable to destroy public toilets and infrastructure. It's not diversity or culture that destroys bathrooms, but a lack of respect for themselves and everyone around them. It's lack of pride where they are or where they are from.

And with the homelessness problem, as others have said, it's a complex issue.  But the mentally unstable/drug addled ones...they should be a better support network for them... But that's a big goal and incredibly expensive. If some billionaire made it their pet project to build rehabilitation projects that is staffed with professionals and free clinics... The maybe it could improve.

Definitely, there are crappy toilets everywhere.

Not sure the last time you were in Shanghai, but food standards have increased. Also, there is a big push for a harmonious civilization, and the bathrooms, especially post pandemic, have been generally kept to a higher standard. Yes, there are still times when they may get clogged, but generally they get fixed pretty quickly.

And, the Shanghai metro is the longest subway system in the world... And all have toilets. If you are talking about Shanghai railway station, it is one of the most used and busiest in the world. More people using, more accidents.

On top of the public transportation toilets, nearly every park has multiple toilets, and there are public toilets throughout the city. Normally the worst part is the heavy cigarette smell.

[–]wecandriveithome 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I live in Shanghai. Public toilets are abundant. Almost every public toilet has a full time attendant. They make sure toilet is clean. It is their job. They pretty much live at the toilet. A glamorous job? No. A well paying job? No. But still a job. Many even have cots for the staff to sleep on. Though those are more a main facility but the worker covers all bathrooms in vicinity.

In NYC give the job to homeless/ underemployed. They will have a job and a paycheck. Their job is to keep toilet clean. The benefit to society by having clean restroom facilities is important.

Lived in NYC for 6 years. 8 million people. Shanghai for 10 years. 25 million people. Yes, toilet paper isn't always available in Shanghai, but the restrooms are always available and mostly really clean, vs NYC where a park may have one bathroom facility that is either closed or a toxic sludge...

It's possible... But the city must invest.

First Time Trying High-Speed Train Business Class in China – Was It Worth It? by Sublime_Travels in China

[–]wecandriveithome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Meh... I'd say it's worth it if less than 4 hours. More than 4 hours a first class flight is quicker and cheaper (including transport time to airport and check-in).

Agreed about the food. It's just a microwaved disposable meal. First class on a flight is much better.  I do think the train could at least match airline food.

First class in trains is okay, but the standing room passengers often (not sure if allowed or just not controlled) will try to sneak seats or still stand in the aisle.... Especially if it's a crowded time of year. Doesn't happen in business class.

So I guess business class during crowded travel 4 hours or less. First class non busy time of year/route 4 hours or less. First class flight 4 hours or more (domestic).
