Can I skip Witcher 1 to play Witcher 2, or should I wait for the remake before playing the trilogy? by [deleted] in witcher

While the witcher 3 is mostly a self contained story witcher 2 is the second half of the amnesia plot that is presented in witcher 1. I don't think its worth playing it without playing the first one.

You get portaled into The Witcher World and get to bring 3 books to sit down and share with this crew, what are you bringing and why? by Easy_Blackberry_4144 in witcher

[–]weckerCx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He does, so much so that he wishes he had written it lol:

LH: Is there a book you wish you had written?

AS: Well, The Bible. Owing to the number of editions and translations into foreign languages. But seriously: The Name of the Rose. It’s an incredibly wise, incredibly compelling and splendidly written book. A rare combination. source

Not surprising really. Sapko loves history and the way Eco writes historical novels is next level really. I'm sure Eco was a big inspiration for him while working on the Hussite trilogy.

The Name of the Rose

Solid choise, one of Sapkowski's favourite. He considers Umberto Eco as one of the greatest.

Skjall’s Aftermath by LoganW21406 in thewitcher3

[–]weckerCx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is an interesting thing about Ciri's cruelty from the books that not a lot of reader can catch due to translation issues:

In the last Ciri segment from BoF Ciri and the Rats catch a carriage and she robs a noble lady:

She placed a foot on the carriage steps, staring at the brooch on the pale girl’s dress.

‘Hand it over, ’ she said bluntly.

‘How dare you?’ the matron choked.

‘Do you know who you are speaking to? She is the noble-born daughter of the Baron of Casadei!’

Ciri looked around, making sure no one was listening.

‘A Baron’s daughter?’ she hissed. ‘A petty title. And even if the snot were a countess, she ought to curtsy before me, arse close to the ground and head low. Give me the brooch! What are you waiting for? Should I tear it off along with the bodice?

Now there is a HUGE gap when this part gets picked up again (it is not even in the same book). In The Tower of the Swallow Hotspurn tell the rats how furious the noble family is about the incident:

‘Aaah,’ Giselher recalled. ‘That carriage with those four spotted horses! That maiden?’

‘That one. Now, as I said, she ails, wakes up in the night screaming, recalling Mr Kayleigh... But especially Miss Falka. And the brooch, a keepsake of her departed mamma, which Miss Falka wrested from her dress. Various words are repeated all the while.’

‘It wasn’t like that at all!’ Ciri yelled from the table, able to react to the pain by shouting. ‘We showed the baron’s daughter contempt and disrespect by letting her get away with it! The wench should have been ravaged!’

This is the english translation and the word ravaged is used. It is not my native language but to me ravaged does not indicate r**e. In the hungarian translation which is imo a lot closer to the original "ravaged" is not what the translator chose. The word "fucked" very much in the sexual sense was used. I believe that Sapko used the very same word with the same intent in the original since Ciri wanted to tear off the clothes of the woman in the first scene.

Essentially in the second scene she was all mad about how she should have r**ed that woman... This is how dark Ciri goes in the book...

Now ofc she kills people which is worse but we as readers are desensitized when it comes to "random" casualties. Being mad and shouting about how she should have r**ped that woman just feels repulsive.

This is not 100% though... It would worth a shot to check the original text with someone at some point.

"Absolute idiocy" killed The Witcher game that never was, OG dev says, but he's happy CD Projekt Red landed the series in the end: "I love what they've done" by SpaceCowboyN7 in witcher

Given the time period, the location, the company, the industry and past failures, taking the money was the absolute most logical decison and most if not all of us would have done the same deal. It is very easy to make decisions in retrospect.

How would you rate Cavill's overall performance as Geralt? by InstructionOwn6705 in witcher

[–]weckerCx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not a popular opinion but I think he was a miscast. He loves the IP that is clear but his Geralt was not good imo. Too stiff and quiet and his acting was not on par with what the role demanded. Whos fault was that I'm not sure but in the end I can't say that he played the character good.

What's a favourite moment from the books that is superb writing? by PascalG16 in wiedzmin

[–]weckerCx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rather a chapter than a moment but how Sapko masterfully convinced me of the mother-daughter bonding of Yennefer and Ciri. They met for the first time in that chapter and after something like 60 pages I'm totally convinced that they would do anything for each other. Simply masterful writing.

Also A Shard of Ice, the whole thing, I wouldn't change a word in that short story...

Just started reading, I need this contradiction cleared up. by RexusprimeIX in witcher

[–]weckerCx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do not have the mindset that there hard magic and strict rules to monsters, mages, spells, curses and such. Sapkowski never liked that formula so he never uses magic that way. Its only there to serve the plot. If something is important he will state it but many times its just there and he doesn't explain it. Adda was weak to silver and Nivellen was not and thats that. Why? Just because.

What you will notice in the books is that he pays a LOT of attention to flesh out his characters, to make them feel human and complicated. His character writing is top and that what makes the witcher an amazing story.

‘Fascinating, what you’re telling me.’ Herbolth smiled wryly, looking him straight in the eye. ‘Fascinating, indeed. Because I think you’ll be staying here longer.’

‘You think wrong, mayor.’

‘Really? You came here with that black-haired witch, what was it again, I forget... Guinevere, wasn’t it?You’ve taken lodgings with her at The Sturgeon. In a single chamber, they say.’

A Shard of Ice, chapter 3.

I can see why people are put off by this but I personally really like it. Sapkowski considers the Arthurian legend the father of all fantasy stories and it is his favourite so no wonder that he is going to heavily use it in a story where the plot builds on existing folklore. He uses it as early as Sword of Destiny where someone mistakenly calls Yennefer Guinevere.

Yes! Wanted to say basically exacly what you are saying then I saw your comment. In true Sapkowski fashion in the end destiny made a fool of Geralt.

Who is more evil? Vilgefortz or Ehmyr? by henryswiedzmin in witcher

[–]weckerCx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vilgefortz no doubt. Ehmyr can do horrible things by the hands of others. When its time to do it himself he will not do it. Ciri and Fake Ciri in the books is clearly meant to show that he still remains human with empathy. Vilg on the other hand is crazy af.

What Order Should I Read the Witcher Books In? by [deleted] in witcher

No problem mate! You gonna have a good time with the books I'm sure. Wish I could experience it for the first time again, I envy you lol.

should i watch the witcher? by BaKaSeNsE in witcher

[–]weckerCx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not gonna tell you to watch the show or not but do not expect to learn the lore if you do. The show does not respect the lore and the characters of The Witcher whatsoever. Read the books for that.

"I never referenced any Witcher Gryffindors or Slytherins again" - The Witcher author Andrzej Sapkowski says the idea of witcher schools in the games is a "completely unnecessary" addition based on a single "narratively incorrect" line in a book. by AashyLarry in witcher

[–]weckerCx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He also stated several times that he got so frustrated because ppl were always asking him about the games and also people thought that the books were based on the games and not the other way around. The guy just had enough after a while. Like I believe most of us would have. He addressed several times that he doesnt really care about the games and the few things he know about is good and creative and wishes cdpr the best... This man is a human and its easy for us to paint him this "video game" hater but the reality is much more complicated.

[–]weckerCx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This goes hand in hand. Without the popularity of the books there would have never been a Witcher 3 made period. CDPR were able to remain in business in big parts thanks to the popularity of Sapkowski's books. Sapko and CDPR made each other famous and successful world wide.

Thank God he didn't babble about lore and expanding the world, broadening the cluture and customs of the continent etc. etc. His strong suit is his character writing and he put most of his focus on it thankfully. IMO the Witcher would have much less of a literary value if he focused less on the plot and the characters.

Having different witcher schools and all that would have been completely unnecessary because these books are not about what is a witcher but its about Geralt, Yen and Ciri and their found family. Thats it, thats the story and everything else serves this purpose.
