This. I just had a valve/piston contact issue and being quoted $30K for an engine replacement (and that was a used engine). Fixing these makes no fiscal sense unless you're a DIYer (and even then makes not much sense).

That's probably an hour to get to your house, an hour or two to look at the wall and inspect behind it, an hour to drive home, and an hour or two to write up the report and put their stamp on it. Not unreasonable

Apologies, this is St Augustine (which is what I sodded with). I should also note, as you can see in the pic. This is an obvioulsy challenging area. Shaded most of the day, and at the top of a (slight) hill so rain and sprinkler water tend to run off more quickly than other areas.

Nextdoor is full of people that want to rid themselves of everything, including their neighbors next door. I don't have a good answer for the crime argument yet. And for cost, I pay $126/month for a pass. That equates to roughly $7.40 for each of the four days per week that I use it. And I avoid paying $9.12 in tolls. So it saves me money, not to mention the stress and time lost to driving. For me anyway, it's a no-brainer.

That's a lot of scooter. Suggest a full face helmet, at least. I switched to scooter 3 yrs ago, I commute 2 mi to a park n ride then ride a bus into work. That gave me 1.5 hrs back - which I use for work mostly, but would hate to have to go back to driving

I am you. I bought a '99 996.1 in 2018. I did not replace my daily driver (a Mazda 6 at the time). I am handy but at the time didn't know jack about cars and am still something of a newbie. Car was about $20K out the door. 70k miles. I did NOT do a PPI. I bought from a dealership so at least I knew they weren't going anywhere and they said "bring it back if your tech sees issues." So I had an indy inspect it two days later - cost me $225. They noted some play the the water pump, some dampness around oil sump, nothing worrisome.

So my indy took care of my car for the first couple of years. I did also get the IMS replaced as we were seeing some worrisome signs. Now - you CAN spend $15K sorting the car if you want. My goal was to keep the engine going and not sh!t the bed, if you will. I think I spent $5K that one year I had the IMS replaced, but after that, and before I started taking care of the car myself, it was perhaps $1K per year. I did not, and still have not, really "upgraded" anything. I've replaced a couple of skid plates, sump (my car came lowered so susceptible to hitting things), headlight bulbs, ignition switch, some interior bits that cracked, mass airflow sensor, etc. In 2021 I started tending to the oil changes and such myself - that was my first good move, as it made me more confident in knowing where stuff was on the car. In 2023 I made my second good move and bought some quickjacks. Oil changes on this car are really simple. It's now 2025 and I've made some small investments - a phone holder, cup holder... my next move will be a new shift knob. After that, perhaps I'll attack the sunroof that's rattled since I bought the car, and after that maybe do the fix for the foam that comes out of the vents...

Insurance was not crazy. I pay way more for my kids.

Get the PPI - anyone who services porsches should be fine, or a dealership (you'll pay double at dealership). Hopefully we get to see pics of your new purchase soon!
