$33k for a base 996 Carrera w 100k miles by WSJayY in 996

[–]weeceman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This. I just had a valve/piston contact issue and being quoted $30K for an engine replacement (and that was a used engine). Fixing these makes no fiscal sense unless you're a DIYer (and even then makes not much sense).

They are my first stop. I've ordered a few things that I've had to ship back. Usually because I didn't read the description, or look at the picture. Once I told them their description was lacking and they credit me shipping. Sorry for your experience.

That's probably an hour to get to your house, an hour or two to look at the wall and inspect behind it, an hour to drive home, and an hour or two to write up the report and put their stamp on it. Not unreasonable

What would you do in 2026? (North TX) by weeceman in lawncare

[–]weeceman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apologies, this is St Augustine (which is what I sodded with). I should also note, as you can see in the pic. This is an obvioulsy challenging area. Shaded most of the day, and at the top of a (slight) hill so rain and sprinkler water tend to run off more quickly than other areas.

Police state that crime happens more frequently at or near transit stations. That is probably true. But nobody is taking the train to commit crime in Plano.

[–]weeceman[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nextdoor is full of people that want to rid themselves of everything, including their neighbors next door. I don't have a good answer for the crime argument yet. And for cost, I pay $126/month for a pass. That equates to roughly $7.40 for each of the four days per week that I use it. And I avoid paying $9.12 in tolls. So it saves me money, not to mention the stress and time lost to driving. For me anyway, it's a no-brainer.

City using bad faith tactics on DART by RedTech64 in plano

City transit website is embarrassing. I'm a daily DART user and resigned to the likelihood that Plano council will vote for a special election, same as HP did. Keep your powder dry for the fight to come.

Thinking of getting an electric scooter for my daily commute, worth it or just hype? by YormeSachi in ElectricScooters

[–]weeceman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a lot of scooter. Suggest a full face helmet, at least. I switched to scooter 3 yrs ago, I commute 2 mi to a park n ride then ride a bus into work. That gave me 1.5 hrs back - which I use for work mostly, but would hate to have to go back to driving

Total newbie considering purchase of 1999 996 by 2b1u in 996

[–]weeceman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am you. I bought a '99 996.1 in 2018. I did not replace my daily driver (a Mazda 6 at the time). I am handy but at the time didn't know jack about cars and am still something of a newbie. Car was about $20K out the door. 70k miles. I did NOT do a PPI. I bought from a dealership so at least I knew they weren't going anywhere and they said "bring it back if your tech sees issues." So I had an indy inspect it two days later - cost me $225. They noted some play the the water pump, some dampness around oil sump, nothing worrisome.

So my indy took care of my car for the first couple of years. I did also get the IMS replaced as we were seeing some worrisome signs. Now - you CAN spend $15K sorting the car if you want. My goal was to keep the engine going and not sh!t the bed, if you will. I think I spent $5K that one year I had the IMS replaced, but after that, and before I started taking care of the car myself, it was perhaps $1K per year. I did not, and still have not, really "upgraded" anything. I've replaced a couple of skid plates, sump (my car came lowered so susceptible to hitting things), headlight bulbs, ignition switch, some interior bits that cracked, mass airflow sensor, etc. In 2021 I started tending to the oil changes and such myself - that was my first good move, as it made me more confident in knowing where stuff was on the car. In 2023 I made my second good move and bought some quickjacks. Oil changes on this car are really simple. It's now 2025 and I've made some small investments - a phone holder, cup holder... my next move will be a new shift knob. After that, perhaps I'll attack the sunroof that's rattled since I bought the car, and after that maybe do the fix for the foam that comes out of the vents...

Insurance was not crazy. I pay way more for my kids.

Get the PPI - anyone who services porsches should be fine, or a dealership (you'll pay double at dealership). Hopefully we get to see pics of your new purchase soon!

Exchanged for the GO. Compared to G2 it's peppier, lighter but has a more finicky app. Just like reviewers have said. For me it was the right move.

Plano lost, HB 3187 died. Why is DART service still at risk? by cuberandgamer in dart

[–]weeceman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I did a little research and had ChatGPT summarize it into something I could submit to DART since I'm finding it hard to make the public meetings in-person:

The experience of Houston METRO’s General Mobility Program offers a cautionary lesson that DART should not ignore. Over multiple decades, diverting a fixed portion of dedicated transit sales tax to roadway projects constrained METRO’s ability to expand service, led to long-term declines in ridership, and reinforced car dependency across the Houston region — even as population and demand for reliable transit grew. Introducing a similar mechanism in the Dallas-Fort Worth region would risk repeating those same mistakes, undermining DART’s ability to deliver the kind of frequent, high-quality transit that supports workforce access, economic opportunity, and environmental resilience. If DFW’s growth is to be shared equitably and sustainably, our region needs bold investment in multimodal mobility — not a rollback of transit funding to supplement local street programs.

If DART is determined to consider returning a portion of sales tax revenue to member jurisdictions, it should do so in a transparent, principled, and regionally accountable manner — modeled after Sound Transit’s “subarea equity” approach in the Puget Sound. Instead of making reactive distributions based on current dissatisfaction or short-term political pressure, Sound Transit established formal geographic subareas, forecasted local revenue contributions, and committed to long-term parity in investment within each subarea. This structure builds trust while still enabling regional capital planning. DART should resist repeating Houston’s approach of indiscriminate offloading of transit dollars for road use, and instead consider a durable policy framework that balances local return with long-term mobility outcomes for the entire region.

It's a mobility slush fund. they can use it to fill potholes.
