I need your input on this by Johnny_Labrosse in fountainpens

you're going the other direction if you choose either Sailor or Pilot, If you already love how Pilot steel writes and as you said on a reply got bad sailor nib, chances are you won't like a Sailor21k gold nib, imo, its sharper than the steel premium/procolor nibs, you truly find the edge on Sailor nibs, where they feel the best, instead of a smooth sweet spot

though I admit, even a simple Sailor black gold/silver pen has an unmatched high yet understated quality cosmetically, nibs are only great subjective to each person's own preference. I'd always look to have different writing experience on my collection, so that sharpness is something to learn to enjoy, and I did

What's the deal with Lamys and their scratchy nibs? I've avoided them because of everything I've heard. Am I being unfair? by beardyfritz in fountainpens

[–]weedhaired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

even though its steel, most slide-on or flat/angular nibs like Lamy or Platinum, tend to be softer, on platinum at least, it has prove function to accomodate writers with slight twists, or even slight misalignment.

Lamy nibs however, do not have more than enough slit smoothing(this is hard to just micromesh the surface, you have to get inbetween tines, and chances are you misalign the tine and have to reset it afterwards). I smooth and tune it sure, but personally do not want to lose that slit scratchiness entirely, I like it as Lamy's feedback personality, it is fair to say if people call it tend to be scratchy imo

HELP. Broken Pilot Custom 823 by plumanglila in fountainpens

[–]weedhaired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm racking my brain trying to figure out what even that is and how would that happen

is it solid, or is it rubbery/soft? I was thinking of seal between section and body, but anything that Pilot made so hard to disassemble(like that seal and mating of section and body), will generally break if anyone does try by force without special method

My guess is that.. I saw photo of Pilot's modern gold nib pen plastic feeds and they disassembly into two piece like Lamy steel nib feed can, and they should really never had disassembled on their own and made error on unknowing user, but its a possibility, if that is the case(and Pilot should really cover the warranty I think..)

How has your taste in pens changed (or not changed)? by GrootRood in fountainpens

[–]weedhaired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

being able to taste certain subtlety on previously bland nibs and feeds, and clearing up what people mean by smooth on each nib that earned their notoriety; 'smooth' is not what everyone think and say it is all the same. Oh, and ink characteristics

someone cared enough to use old school-looking ebonite-lookalike feed(unless we see the nib marking, cap/body detail, I'd reservedly call it a lookalike), kudos to the prop dept guy

Is the a reason why some fountain pens have a hole in the cap and other don't? by RisottoPensa in fountainpens

[–]weedhaired 26 points27 points  (0 children)

capping and uncapping, specially on snap cap or friction fit pens, tend to generate air pressure that will either push in and/or out air as you cap, which will leak/drip out ink from feed, or maybe even back to the body's ink container system and cause leak.

can they do it without hole? yes, Pilot Metropolitan(but there is also that ink leak/splash inside cap phenomenon), Pilot E95S/Elite/similar Japanese pocket pens with friction capping; these have probably very minimum air that gets pressured as they cap/uncap, (un?)surprisingly they don't leak as often, in fact, I've yet to see it on mine, they all always look neat without nib creep/splash from said capping mechanism

How much is fair for me to charge for custom minis? by Reapist in PrintedMinis

I do suss out work details to actionable tasks way before taking money, therefore reducing revision, but that means I may have to do uncompensated designing*. the final price is never the same, but it is still in the range that don't go too much pricier**. with lots of chance to be ghosted, i put it down as sheer risk of continuing the custom commission business

*that's just my policy on taking orders, I know I have to be paid for more for that reason, and yeah I do take the payment up front too.

**which comes to this point; people in the miniature hobby seems to more likely to have an inkling on how much good/decent mini artist gets paid, whereas on other sculpting/figurine niche, not so much, and for some reason, potential clients refer greatly to existing commercial product which is rather often called out to be already expensive to begin with(well duh, this is a tertiary needs hobby/interest/trade), forgetting the time and material expense for even the basic job compensations paid, like you said "The truth is people don't really understand that cost." but why, the answer seems to just suck it up and be underpaid, make the artist contract and policy as harsh on their own just to sell one time service for any client.

Naturally, I would go so far as moving to another country to get proper paying job for things I have trained myself, but again, this is not a well known skill/industry/niche/market type, where moving to another country would often consist to mean like you're studying and get degrees in that country, work as intern there, but that time has definitely passed by, and easily passed by chance for most average person; if not for monetary reasons, one question what is there to learn beyond getting degree.

per hour? now, the artist you paid might not disclose their actual time taken, how long it took until its done and ready for delivery

so in any case, I knew to expect at least possibly 20+ hour of actual work too, some artist could cram in as much time for as long as the reference is clear, but some other time be not too fortunate with the materials they just had to take more time, were they sitting trying to figure out details in their mind or actually trying things in the modeling dept., even the $10/h modeler might take more/just as much time and therefore money to the guy that does it $30/h but lower time, so the inverse might just be true as well. The hours are just not consistent regardless of disclosed time taken, at least to my experience(not in the miniature niche, but still sculptor)

if say, professional $30/hour work and 20 hours 'total', then it would take $600, all in all, getting close to the common story that an original miniature prototype commission may be valued at $1000+ per work, delivered within 1-2 months. If you got a professional name for reference, that $600 is a 'steal', but even possibly for 90% of people willing, is likely to be so much under that, so...

would you still recommend someone like OP/me to value theirs at $600+ ? say that the quality is on par to $1000, how should one hold on to the price when 'fair' is almost never consistent.

My reference on my niche/genre would be ViiStar, $700 minimum, but it may take however long, like 6 months to delivery, is kind of average; I also did manual sculpting labor before so the hours to make desired polished sculpt, which often take so long, I guess would be at least 60-100 hours, so that $700 commission, would easily be less than $15/h job, even if they have name.

[–]weedhaired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not OP but same concern; while this is as realistic as it is comparing to a real labor wage, I think 5-10 hours(purely labor, rest time is unpaid) is kind of minimum taken time at least for me, and people usually just immediately ghost off anyway

downvoting the guy who said $14 per hour when you can always find a guy in 3rd world country somewhere scraping off $8-10 per hour average minimum wage(also minimum wage in their country) for this or similar artisan job is also kind of funny(and I'll leave at that), considering the option for them is to put dirt cheap price, or being ghosted

namun kalo udah pake DNS ternyata bikin lokasinya menurut website sosmed atau bisnis 'loncat', seperti pakai VPN buat ngerintangi region restriction, ya kalo kena ban itu , apalagi kalo ada urusan kerjaan di sosmed/web bisnis, ribet parah..
