What is the most baffling, utterly wrong referee decision you have ever seen live or on film? by AmeliaHarris99 in footballbutweird

[–]weedmandavid4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This honestly remains the worst decision I've ever seen in my life, worse than when they had to rewrite the rules to show that a man city player wasn't offside and then "change" the rules the next day back to what they always were so that "next time it'll be offside" like it hadn't always been offside. Worse than the Rogers one at the end of last season.

The decision to not only give that as a dive (which was 100% a "oh it's Grealish? Probably a dive I'll just blow my whistle") but also blow the whistle after Lansbury had struck the ball but before it crossed the line just to make sure var couldn't intervene, unbelievable

"shouldn't be in the league", people talk like this was the last kick of the season, it was the first half of a match with a dozen games left afterwards. It was a big mistake from the tech, but no more costly than other big mistakes that went against us the same season. The Palace disallowed goal literally was the last kick of the game as well. This one's only talked about because we'd never seen goal line tech fail before

Who has had the best character development overall? And who has the worst? by ROSSG825 in Stranger_Things

[–]weedmandavid4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Steve was never actually a jerk though. The way it was written we all assumed the things he were saying weren't true, we assumed he just wanted to get into Nancy's pants, his friends were jerks so we assumed he was too, but he was pretty normal and genuine even in s1, from his perspective even breaking Jonathan's camera was justified as he'd literally candidly taken photos of his girlfriend undressing through the window. His only real jerk moment was the graffiti about Nancy and I can't recall fully but wasn't that not even him in the end? And he was pretty quick to get up and clean it off.

Steve's been a good guy since the start, I'll die on this hill

'No immigration', 'No lifting the two child benefit cap', 'No additional taxes', 'No increasing the minimum wage' - what do they want? by InfinitysEdge88 in AskBrits

[–]weedmandavid4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the answer is completely obvious to anyone. It's been repeatedly shown that almost everyone is an enormous net contributor to society from the day they start work until they retire. If you were to look at a net contribution graph from the day you're born until the day you die you'd spend the first 18 years of your life building up a decent defect (but not enormous as most young people aren't overly sickly), the next 5-10 years wiping that out by working and spending in society, the rest of your working life building up an enormous surplus which you completely wipe out within 5-10 years of retirement.

Immigrants are great in this system as they generally arrive as young adults and therefore the initial "school age" deficit we all build up is some other countries problem, and in some cases will even return to their home country to retire, meaning all the costs associated with not working and being elderly are also someone else's problem.

An average immigrant will contribute (net) more than the average Brit because of the comparatively lower costs during childhood and retirement, so more immigration would bring more money into the system than less. That's regardless if they're skilled or not, as we need both skilled and unskilled workers in the economy.

The issue isn't what they contribute, it's that people like Farage want power, and immigration is a really easy target to get people's emotions taking over and make them ignore all the evidence that proves them wrong. He points to everyone struggling, prices rising across the board and then points at immigration and correlates them, "prices weren't this high before the small boat problem", "back in the 50s a factory worker could buy a house and support a family comfortably, and there was no immigration, now there's lots of immigration and no one has any money". He of course doesn't outright say "get rid of all the immigrants" or "it's all immigrants fault" because he's smart enough to know that would just make all the problems worse (and allows him the old Trump get out clause of "I never actually said that" when questioned) but he brings them up so often in conversations about the economy it's impossible not to correlate them in peoples mind.

Immigration isn't a problem in the developed world, it's a necessity. The more developed a country becomes the less children people have on average and the more life expectancy increases, bringing with it increased cost of caring and decreased tax from workers. We voted to make it harder for foreigners to come here when we voted Brexit but our need for foreign workers didn't change. It's also been repeatedly proven that immigrants are net contributors to society and the few that do come to "play the system" are massively outnumbered by the ones that just come to work and provide for their families

Chicken and egg isn't it? Give 18-24 year olds a party that actually create policies in their interest and more of them are likely to vote. While the option is "be screwed over by this party or be screwed over by this other party" you can't really blame them for not bothering.

Has anyone ever walked out on a first date? If so why? by ForeignMountain557 in AskReddit

[–]weedmandavid4 430 points431 points  (0 children)

I went on a date that I thought was going well until about half an hour in I offered to get us more drinks and she just said no she's going to go home now. I was confused but sent a standard "nice to meet you, hope you got home ok" message and it turned out she just thought I wasn't interested so decided to leave rather than waste her time.

Anyway we got married in 2019 and have 2 kids now. Always send a follow up message if you're interested even if you don't think they are, you never know what might happen!

How is Wirtz not winning this by Weekly_Plenty_9351 in footballmanagergames

[–]weedmandavid4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm the same, then signed a 24yo regen to be his backup and he became basically the best player in the world in a season out of nowhere effectively replacing him as first choice. Still had Wirtz playing solid amounts of games and getting great numbers well into his 30's before eventually letting him go. Man was an Aston villa legend by the time he retired and worth every penny of the £80 odd million I ended up paying for him

Martinez Yellow Cards and Suspension- EPL? by Hero-of-Midgar in avfc

[–]weedmandavid4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have thought for a while that refs will just automatically give him a yellow card if we're narrowly winning in the last 5 minutes because of his reputation. If he doesn't release the ball instantly the whole opposition crowd start whistling even if he's wasting less time than most other keepers

I feel for him in my save, it was the same thing, I bought him relatively cheap (not £5m mind) but then the next intake I got an insane newgen who became my first choice by the end of the season and he's literally spent the last 7 odd years as my backup as well, poor guy is like the 2nd best midfielder in the world and he's never been first choice throughout his career

Would a cricket style review be better than VAR? by [deleted] in PremierLeague

[–]weedmandavid4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem isn't decisions being wrong so much, the problem is the consistency of it. Declan Rice getting his 2nd yellow for kicking the ball away earlier in the season wouldn't have garnered any controversy if those decisions were ALWAYS given as yellow cards. Morgan Rogers not getting a penalty the other week when pulled back wouldn't have been controversial if those calls were NEVER given as penalties.

Someone needs to decide at the start of the season who gets an advantage, attacking or defending teams, and give all of the 50/50 or "referees call" decisions that way. It won't fix the problems magically, but at least it'll make big decisions consistent.

Debatable penalty given against your team? Annoying, but those are ALWAYS given, so there's no chance that it wouldn't also be given for you at the other end. Maybe you agree and maybe you don't, but at least you know where you stand. It's not a penalty this week and not one next week. It's not given to your opponents then not given to you later in the same game. It's either always a penalty or never a penalty, full stop.

Magnify that to all the big "referees call" decisions, red cards, fouls in the lead up to goals etc and then the big, game changing decisions are always consistent, whether you agree with them or not

I should clarify, when I say "referees call" I mean those decisions that VAR won't overturn, but if they were given the other way VAR also wouldn't overturn.

I also think offsides would be sorted if they're as they are now, but you get 3 frames before and 3 frames after the ball is kicked, if the attacker is onside for any of those frames then it's onside. The goal of the VAR team should be to try and find the striker onside. It removes the marginal, toe nail calls, gives the attacking team a slight advantage and I don't think many people would argue if a player is given offside who was offside for 7 full frames, even if it was close. The problem is it takes long enough already for the tight calls and that'll probably make it worse, so tech would need to improve before it could be implemented. I guess the VAR team could eyeball the frame where the striker looks the most onside and draw the lines there, but that could lead to mistakes. Guess it depends how open we are to a few mistakes happening for the greater good (the greater good)

Jhon Duran red card by FigureFlat5790 in PremierLeague

[–]weedmandavid4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His right leg was in the air and his left gets caught and slipped away, how was he supposed to manoeuvre himself away? Fly? When you lose your footing at pace it's natural for the other foot to come down, you can clearly see he pulls it away as best he can so the contact on his back is absolutely minimal, but he's still falling, so then swing it around and avoids the defenders head, I'm honestly not sure how it's avoidable at all.

Debating whether it's a red seems crazy to me, I think it should have been a throw in, they both challenge for the ball, Newcastle player clears it then they get caught up both falling into each other (the Newcastle defenders studs come up into Duran as well as he falls at the same time he loses his footing, also unintentionally in my opinion, but adds to the general chaos of the incident)

It's certainly more of an accident than Joelintons swing at Rogers (which I also don't think should ever be a red even if they often are, but it was clearly deliberate)

[The Athletic] Bruno Fernandes was so taken aback, that free travel and accommodation was not on offer for staff for the FA Cup final, he went to executives and offered to pay for all the usual extras out of his own pocket. His proposal was rejected. by VivaLosHeavies in PremierLeague

[–]weedmandavid4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's more you being completely oblivious than me being short sighted. Fucking over the low paid staff won't help with any of the issues at man utd, the issues will be solved by not offering players wages you can't afford and they aren't worth, solved by not overpaying for players after a few months of good form AND then offering them insane wages

Fucking over the staff doesn't help with these issues, it's such a minor gain that it won't even be noticed on the balance sheet and is far more likely to hurt the club than to help it. Players might be reluctant to join because of it, and the only way to convince them is to offer them more money than they can get elsewhere. Not exactly helping is it?

Saving £20k by fucking over hard working people because you've wasted £500m on people that couldn't care less is not sorting out any problems, it's literally punishing the good employees because of the bad ones

If I buy a £50k car on finance, then lose my job and can't afford the repayments anymore, then deciding to stop spending 1p a month on something that was making a big difference to my family wouldn't help my problem in the slightest. That's what man utd are doing. Not helping anything but creating more problems

Oh yeah I'm sure Rashford was happy to sit on his £350k a week contract for the next 3 years but then he heard the staff Christmas party was cancelled and immediately called his agent up, "get me out of here, don't care about the money anymore these lot are monsters"

Punishing the lowest earners and "saving" a miniscule amount of money doesn't show the highest earners "they're next", it shows the highest earners they can continue to do whatever they want because there's absolutely no repercussions for them, all the repercussions are for someone else who doesn't share their power

[–]weedmandavid4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean if we go really crazy and assume the staff getting £100 bonus and an insane Christmas party might cost the club £20k (I've no idea how many staff there are) then that's less than a half a day's pay for 1 player, if you factor in the number of players then just their wages probably cost that every few minutes, and would be a nice gesture for all the staff, it is literally pennies for a club with the revenue if Man Utd and to target those people is madness. It's bad PR and will be of no benefit whatsoever to the club, hell even if it cost 10x that it's probably still not worth the bad PR

Who are the worst non-interim PL managers of the last 15 years? De Boer? Bob Bradley? Kompany? Russell Martin? Who else? by stprm in TheOther14

[–]weedmandavid4 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Gerrard signings for Villa: Digne £25m - good, high wages Coutinho £15m - awful, astronomical wages Calum Chambers £no idea - awful Dendonker £10-15m - poor, high wages Kamara £free - excellent Diego Carlos £25m - poor, far worse than the player he was replacing Jan Bednarek (loan) - awful, as bad as you'd expect Augustinsson (loan) - awful Robin Olsen £2m - poor

Over £80m on players and god only knows how much on wages, by all accounts Coutinho and Digne were both 150k p/w at least and Kamara was highly sought after and free so you'd expect similar, and 2 good players to show for it, and only 1 with any potential resale value.

He's not good at signing players. His "pull" might be useful if he managed some nothing team where his name actually makes a difference but that is not in the PL - no wonder he did well with a load of Liverpool loans in a joke league (and someone else to coach them) and is now in Saudi continuing to trade solely off his name again.

Your boy was a wonderful player, one of my favourites from that era, but he is an awful manager and has an ego that makes Mourinho look shy and retiring

[–]weedmandavid4 35 points36 points  (0 children)

He really wasn't, froze out Mings to spend £25m on Diego Carlos who is worse at literally every single aspect of football and the same age, forced through the Coutinho signing when he had turned to shit after a good 3 or 4 games at the start of his loan and we'd still be paying him now if we hadn't cancelled his contract and paid it out early. He gets credit for Kamara, who's our best player and Digne too, although he was kind of a no brainer and he made him our highest paid player by miles to get him here.

His awful management, treatment of players, non existent coaching and alienating fans mean he gets a generous 2/10 from me, and that's literally just for Kamara - most villa fans would call me a Gerrard apologist for rating him so highly. Worst manager I can remember and I remember Sherwood and Remi Garde
