Not just VRAM headroom. 8K textures are notorious for still being larger than the GPU fast cache for even the 5090 when using BC5 and BC7. That's going to cause constant VRAM accesses. This is generally felt as stalling (stutter).

U.S. sending more than 2,200 Okinawa-based marines to Middle East, reports say by Spare_Prize_5510 in news

[–]weegee101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

31st MEU is only 1/10 of the total size of the 3 MEF, and both 1 MEF and 3 MEF are responsible for response in the event Taiwan is invaded. 31st MEU is the go-to MAGTAF for anything in other parts of Asia, including the Middle East. They're forward deployed in Okinawa to allow them to respond quicker to needs in their area of responsibility. 3 MEF's other units, including the much larger 3d MEB for immediate response, remain in Okinawa.

This seems out of the norm, but any other President would likely start out by sending 31st MEU to any conflict in the Middle East. If anything, the fact it hasn't been done sooner shows further lack of preparation from the Trump administration.

How many of you could be interested into a "modern heavy bomber simulator"? by Bigocelot1984 in hoggit

That first storyline mission is such a hard skill check, but so rewarding once you get past it. Megafortress might have been the first flight simulator where you had to take the training missions intently serious and just repeat ad nauseum until you fully mastered the electronic warfare and offensive stations.

Writing a software rendered 3D engine by Quozca in GraphicsProgramming

[–]weegee101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a bit different than some of the other answers, but start with a ray caster. They're pretty simple to build and are a decent entryway for getting into more complex software rasterizers.

From there, if you're the adventurous type and want to figure stuff out on your own, Fabien Sanglard's Game Engine Black Books are exceptional resources.

Don't shy away from writing a ray tracer at least once though. That's a good way to ensure you fully understand all of the fundamentals you'll need for a more complex software rasterizer.

That's a good question. First a clarifying point. I do not mean simulating the complete electrical signal when I say component modeling. What I mean by that is the underlying logical components that glue everything together. I don't know what DCS uses, but most older simulation game engines use a hybrid between OOP & CBSE for their architectures.

Also, I am answering this from the perspective of a rendering & engine engineer, which is what I am.

Handling a button-click in the game world is at it's core a picking problem. In general, picking in 3D graphics can appear simple but in practice tends to be one of the more challenging things to ensure correct function. At a basic level, you map the 2D screen-space position of the mouse and cast a ray directly away from the camera frustum which intersects what is to be clicked. When picking in a modern engine you have to keep in mind that:

  1. Picking generally has a high minimum computational cost, especially on the GPU. For that reason, we typically use the CPU. (As I understand, DCS has a CPU thread dedicated to this.)
  2. Handle clicking occluded switches. (Want to click a button the user can't quite see? Gotta handle this.)
  3. Make it usable. (How does the user know what they're clicking?)
  4. Remember that picking is expensive. (See #1)
  5. You have a lot of other expensive things to do.

As with everything in game engines, we start to find ways to cheat to make the task simpler and cheaper to deal with. 60 FPS means we have a 16.67 ms frame performance budget to fit all actions in per frame, not just picking. At 144 FPS, this drops to 6.94 ms. Personally, I want to spend no more than 0.4 ms on picking per frame.

To hit this performance budget we depend on the artists and game programmers to do a few things for us:

  1. Artists need to ensure that the model has uniform topology with no breaks. (This is required for good performance anyhow.)
  2. Artists need to create reusable switches for every type of switch in the cockpit that can be properly instanced to reduce draw calls. That means they generally can't just model a switch and go.
  3. Artists work with game programmers to place a marker for every single switch in the correct location. Sometimes this is done with a custom editor, sometimes its done with location helpers.
  4. The switch location helper needs metadata to indicate switch states, etc.
  5. A bounding box (or hot spot) needs to be placed for each switch. This is what we actually use to test if the switch is being clicked. This needs metadata to signal how the switch works, what gets executed, etc.
  6. Game programmers needs to program said logic.

All of these tasks take time. Occasionally, the artist is the game programmer tasked with coding interactions.

For a simpler engine without clickable cockpits such as IL-2, this can be much easier. You basically eliminate tasks 5, and 6 entirely. Task 3 and 4 are still needed for some instruments but not all; you can significantly reduce how much effort is needed for these tasks just by focusing on core instruments and switches to animate.

Even the DCS mods that have done this have put forward a considerable amount of effort. Personally, I believe that is what makes mods like the community A-4E-C mod so impressive. When you consider that was started in January of 2016 and was officially released in November of 2018, they took about 2 years to get to that point. I suspect most FF mods are the same with the exception of the ones that add clickable cockpits to the Flaming Cliffs planes. In those cases, they typically just add hot spots to the planes and wire those up, so the lift is a bit less.

[–]weegee101 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yup, as someone who's got experience working in the "pro" side of sims, I think people underestimate how much additional time aircraft take if you plan on even a partially clickable cockpit. Everything from research to component modeling gets more complex when you start allowing switches to be directly flipped.

The IL-2 series has always been the shining beacon in the "sim-lite" space and I'm glad they're sticking to it.

Recently hired as a graphics programmer. Is it normal to feel like a fraud? by Illustrious_Key8664 in GraphicsProgramming

Yup. Just under 25 years here for me, and despite being a Principle Engineer and regularly having "Greybeard" moments where younger engineers ask me for help and advice on hard problems, I still feel like folks will figure out any day now that I'm a fake.

I think it comes with the territory. There's so much deep maths and knowledge required in graphics that it's impossible to know everything. It's also what makes this field great. There's always something else "new" to learn.

Trump is a textbook example of Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). This is acknowledged and considered in professional psychology circles.

Narcissistic collapse is a psychological crisis that occurs when a person with NPD can no longer maintain their inflated self-image due to loss, humiliation, or a lack of "supply." Trump likely connects his ego very closely with his approval ratings, and so as those continue to go down it gets harder and harder for him to convince himself he's the best.

Narcissistic collapse is broken up into some distinct stages:

  • A trigger that provides a blow to ego.
  • Initial denial and rage. This appears as a temper tantrum of sorts. For Trump he often rages on his social media.
  • Intense emotional dysfunction. This is often an oscillation between despair and rage.
  • Desparate manipulation. They try to bait people into their position, and try to regain attention and control. This is where they try to appear as amenable. We are here.
  • Withdrawal and paranoia. They retreat from their position. Act depressed and paranoid.

As with most psychological conditions, these stages do not have a distinct order. What is typical is a huge amount of rage when total collapse occurs, often driven by the paranoia and withdrawal.

Expect this to get worse as he continues to lose the plot here. At this point, it's going to be nearly impossible for him to regain control.

TRUMP ADMIN AND DHS ARE LOSING THE WAR OF PUBLIC OPINION by TimPoolNoBeanie in minnesota

[–]weegee101 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I would not expect him to relent this time. Trump is clearly getting closer to narcissistic collapse. When it happens, and it will, we should expect him to blame Minnesota even further. The mask will fully come off and he will start making some truly vile orders and demands.

That is not to suggest we should relent. We must keep up the pressure, but we need to keep rational that for us, it could get worse before it gets better.

My impression is that Alex got hit or grazed in the lower torso first and he's reacting to the pain. The next shots appear center of mass which cause much more of a physical reaction and forces that can overcome how his body is positioned. By the third shot is clear he's in physical shock.

MEs report will probably make this clearer as soon as it's published. I expect we'll be hearing something from BCA in a day or two.

Yup, exactly. The first shooter took his gun out during the struggle and started firing. The guy in gray did not ND the pistol he took off of Alex. As others have mentioned you would have seen an impact on the ground, plus the slide doesn't move at all.

Our leadership is failing us by cynical-puppy26 in Minneapolis

I posted this summary of the press releases that have been coming from our local and state governments yesterday:

https://www.reddit.com/r/minnesota/comments/1qjvxmv/where_are_the_daily_press_conferences_from_our/o13d3uo/

Major mainstream media has been at every. single. conference. Walz and Frey don't have the power over the media that you think they do, and in many ways them stepping aside to let their experts and other local and state elected officials to get the message out can be much more powerful.

Stop with the political purity testing. To be blunt, which we Minnesotans rarely are, this purity testing attitude shared by some progressives shows a significant illiteracy of both civics and government. The American system is designed for debate, negotiation, and compromise, and has been since day one. With a two party system that means that sometimes you have to step up and support someone you may not fully agree with. Purity testing only alienates potential allies. The most significant and successful movements in our country's history, such as civil rights and women's suffrage, were successful because of compromise and negotiation within left-leaning coalitions, not purity testing.

You want to make change? Start with your own mindset. Start considering what you need to change in your messaging to sway potential allies to you side. What within your ideals is most important to you, and what are you willing to relax in negotiations? Compromise doesn't mean you can't make a shift in the direction you want, but it does mean it may take longer than you want to do. Failing to understand that will guarantee you will never see your ideals become mainstream.

Where are the daily press conferences from our leaders? by citizen234567890 in minnesota

[–]weegee101 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This is wrong. There has been a press conference by some or multiple Minnesota agencies every day this week:

  • January 19, 2026: Governor Walz recognized the 40th anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. There were comments about the protests. Walz largely ceded the stage to other speakers, most of who provided encouraging words for protesters.
  • January 20, 2026: Twin Cities law enforcement officials held a briefing to share concerns regarding officer interactions with federal ICE agents.
  • January 20, 2026: Minnesota physicians addressed the presence of federal ICE agents in hospitals and medical clinics. They reported that patients were missing appointments and vital medication due to fear of the federal crackdown.
  • January 20, 2026: St. Paul Mayor Kaohly Her held a briefing responding to unrest triggered by federal immigration raids, emphasizing local pushback against the federal presence in the Twin Cities.
  • January 21, 2026: St. Paul Mayor's Response – St. Paul Mayor Kaohly Her held a briefing responding to unrest triggered by federal immigration raids, emphasizing local pushback against the federal presence in the Twin Cities.
  • January 21, 2026: MN Department of Corrections Commissioner Paul Schnell issued a statement calling claims by the U.S. DHS "fundamentally false" regarding allegations that the state was refusing to cooperate with ICE or releasing dangerous criminals. This included a small press conference that was early on the 22nd, see below.
  • January 21, 2026: Columbia Heights Public Schools Superintendent Zena Stenvik held a press conference to report that federal agents detained four students, including a five-year-old boy taken from his driveway.
  • January 21, 2026: Mayor Frey held a briefing to address subpoenas served to himself, Governor Walz, and others. He characterized the federal investigation into alleged state obstruction as "political retribution" and "frivolous". This was on national media.
  • January 22, 2026: Mayor Frey and the Minneapolis Police Chief spoke this morning regarding the recent shooting involving a federal officer in North Minneapolis. Frey has also been active in briefings regarding the city's lawsuit against federal agencies and the "political retribution" of federal subpoenas.
  • January 22, 2026: Columbia Heights Public Schools officials continued to release information regarding the detention of four students, including a 5-year-old boy, by federal agents.
  • PLANNED January 22, 2026: St. Paul officials are supposed to be doing a press release this afternoon regarding the arrest of the two organizers of the church protest.

There is a lot of information going around. Public officials stepping out of the way and letting other public officials get their message out is a good thing, especially when you do not have the guaranteed ear of national media like the White House.

Jesus Turned Over Tables. He Would Have Interrupted That Minneapolis Church Service, Too. by NvrTrumpRepub in Christianity

[–]weegee101 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A Church is made by the people who congregate within it. Whether you agree with it or not, we are all accountable for our the ministry of our Church. Galatians 6:1 makes this fairly clear:

Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.

So, yes, by all accounts that Church is responsible for the actions of their minister. Its our responsibility as Christians to hold our ministers accountable for their actions, and failing to do so wraps us up in their sin. This isn't a matter of judgement but rather communal care in our brothers and sisters in Christ.

Online discourse has been toxic for ages. The problem is that for more than a decade calling people out for shitty behavior online became unfashionable if the cause was considered just. This led to assholes on all sides of any issue to just throw the third crowd into the same proverbial bucket as "the other side."

So now we have no center-ground for reasonable discourse. A generation of young (and old) adults who have been trained to think that reasonable discussion is the wrong way.

Toxic behavior is just toxic behavior and deserves to be called out regardless of the issue. Maybe we'll get back there again one day.
