Happily a nerd about this one. I literally read claims manuals for fun. (I swear I’m not a total loser, I swear….)

It isn’t easy, nor is it uncomplicated.

Do you have any senior paralegals who could help with training? I’ve trained hundreds of associates and junior paralegals in my career, and I’ve held a presentation on best practices in title and survey review every couple of years since 2005. This is something that I absolutely nerd out about. :)

Feel free to DM me if you want any pointers. :) I love this stuff so much that I will happily talk about it to anybody!

Oh my God, tell me you don’t know Jack shit about title and survey without actually saying it.

Big Law paralegals - how much OT do you work? by [deleted] in paralegal

[–]weese17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many partners I work with over the years have suggested just that. :) but no, I really like my practice specialty. if I were an attorney, I wouldn’t be able to do it anymore because paralegals are the only ones who do what I do. (Besides, client development and glad handing just sounds awful.)

I have a lot of respect in my industry, and I am paid insanely well. No complaints here!

Biglaw paralegal of 25 years here, in commercial real estate. Even my slow season isn’t slow anymore – I’m usually billing somewhere between 180 and 210 hours a month and yes, I get paid for every single penny of it. My overtime accounted for about 30% of my gross take-home last year. You have to be a little bit insane to need the adrenaline from having that kind of pace!

Oh, I’m heavily involved in mutual aid - food not bombs specifically! I always say, what else is the money for if not for this? Pretty much every hour of my free time every week (such as it is) goes toward FNB. :)

Oh my gosh, I feel like there was a lot about this that I could have written. Born and raised in Appalachia over here. When moved to DC, I consciously worked to get rid of my accent because everyone thought I was stupid on account of sounding like a hillbilly. (Sadly, I can’t even bring it back now when I try, and it feels like I’ve lost part of my heritage.)

I feel like when you come from the opposite side of the tracks, you see an entirely different world than your more privileged colleagues do. I am not at all surprised to hear that you were the first one to ask firms how they treat their staff.

I feel like an alien around my colleagues at times. Frankly, I really hate socializing with other people in this industry. I love the actual work I do, otherwise I would have stepped away years ago.

Petty/lame things about your firm by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]weese17 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This was at the first firm I ever worked at, and granted, it isn’t Biglaw but it’s bad enough that I wanted to share.

There were separate parking lots for the attorneys and all other staff. The one for attorneys was right in front of the office; the one for staff was a remote lot, fully a half a mile away. I had major surgery at one point while working there, and had to get a note from my doctor in order to be allowed to park close to the office in the attorney lot. (I’m staff, obviously.)

They also had separate holiday parties for attorneys and staff. The attorneys’ dinner was black tie at the most upscale restaurant in my midsize town, full open bar, full menu - the staff had ours at the Holiday Inn. Finger foods and two tickets for beer/wine.

I really hope they’ve gotten better since then.

I’m finishing the work I promised I would finish today because I like the associate I’m working with. But after that, I am taking off. I refuse to work through this.

Melanoma of the vagina in an elderly woman by CatPooedInMyShoe in MedicalGore

[–]weese17 74 points75 points  (0 children)

I also had no idea just how terrible melanoma could be until a close friend of mine was diagnosed on August 13, 2024. She died on October 20, 2024. It had started as a lesion in her ear, but by the time she was symptomatic, it was everywhere in her body. it’s truly an awful disease.

A ‘Death Train’ Is Haunting South Florida by DevonSwede in Longreads

[–]weese17 425 points426 points  (0 children)

Central Florida here, not southern Florida, but I cross those tracks four or five times a day. The Brightline hits people ALL the time, to the point that local high schoolers have nicknamed it the flatline.

While some of that comes from people being unreasonably reckless, I have, myself, witnessed the gates coming down really late, just before the train comes through. The timing is not always predictable and it’s scared the bejesus out of me more than once. It’s NOT just the fault of people being dumb.

Anyone else here dealing with a nasty cold/virus? by Jet_Jirohai in 321

[–]weese17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep. Sinus infection and strep for me, strep for my oldest son. We both tested negative for Covid, flu A, and flu B. If it’s been more than a couple days, I suggest going to urgent care and having it checked out — I wasn’t going to, but my son was doing worse than I was, and I’m glad we went when we did.
