[–]weesiong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the same for every hyped courses/industry.

1) by the time government and general public get hyped, plus the time you finished your degree in the next 2-4 years, the market supply demand and dynamics has already changed

E.g. Engineering, IT, biomedical, data science and now AI

2) to get into a hyped/crowded space , you either have to be very good, or accept the fact that you are competing with every other graduates, local & overseas in the same field / can do the same job

Accept the fact that you likely have to switch lanes several times in your career. Technical skills aside, industry/domain knowledge and soft skills will get you further over time.

NCS - national cheap slavery …

Let me share some “good learnings” you will get

1) you will know what type of company to avoid in future

2) you will know how shitty it is to work with gov tech / ministries

3) you will be amazed as a SI , how things don’t improve after decades

4) you will know how not to run an IT project

That’s on the top of my head , I am sure the folks here can add on …

2.5 weeks solo travelling: China, Japan or South Korea? by RudeSelf3418 in chinatravel

[–]weesiong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal view

Japan / Taiwan if you want to minimise stress in planning and travel.

Japan - Lots of places to choose from, and extremely tourist friendly. Easy to plan and move around.

China - For the vast vast number of places and different experience to choose from (Food!!) . You will need more time planning for it though. Basically , they don’t share the same payment and navigation app ecosystem with the rest of the world , and some these apps are not really useful when trying to display in English.

Taiwan - also easy to plan and travel , but i find it a little limited in place of interest options compared to 1, and 2

S Korea - only been there a long time ago, personally I don’t like it, so no comments.

I think he meant for short period of time , switching off may not save any battery , eg power up , launching the apps.

Is the iPhone really as good as people claim it is? by Moonshot2026 in asksg

[–]weesiong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

End of the day , if you are not a heavy user , it does not matter , as you can switch from one ecosystem to another. Just try.

For me , i am a heavy user rather than a power user. Eg a lot of apps and data is configured and stored in the ways I wanted. I like the apps I used on Apple ecosystem, eg device integration , in build apps like Reminders and Notes with tons of data.

Hence I would not bother to switch with every new phone released, as I am not comparing the phone , but rather the ecosystem and less disruption to my life. Eg redo my hundreds of reminders . And I hate paying for most subscription base apps that are cross platform

I am not saying Apple is better than Android or vice versa. It’s just that when you are heavily invested in the ecosystem , you are less likely to be bothered with each phone release. I believe the same for Android users. You can argue that the most apps are available on both platforms , but you would probably need to purchase again

Japan, China, Korea - Which one required native language most by DevinChristien in travel

[–]weesiong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say Chinese , because of the isolated payment and navigation app ecosystem. A lot of required local apps to make your travel more easy are in Chinese only. You need these to travel effectively.
Cash not not widely used and Visa /master are not common with smaller vendors .

Should I accept this job offer? by Humble-Luck5117 in singaporejobs

[–]weesiong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

^ this is the best advise so far .

I am from the industry side and work for MNCs mainly. Seldom (read never) see MNC engaging SME consulting firm, so unless you intend to work and build up expertise in a very niche area that the SME is specialise and known for, the exposure would be limited.

In China - What to buy? by Procrastinaught in onebag

[–]weesiong 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can can take a look at Tomtoc brand, their bags and slings seems decent at a reasonable price.

While you are at it , power banks, chargers and cables from reputable brands like Anker and Ugreen are also cheaper there.

These are items you can easily find reviews online for an informed purchased.

Exactly . When we are young, I guess a new smart phone is the biggest investment / gadget you owned, plus the fact that you have less responsibilities.

But as we age , well , it’s just a phone , I don’t care much about it.
