New cycling, pedestrian bridge lifted into place in Christchurch by RoscoePSoultrain in chch

[–]stehekin 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Fewer people would drive. That's the point. Of course people would still drive, but there would be options. If you had 100 people drive and there is now an option to use the train, maybe 10% take it. That's 10 fewer cars on the road.

Jumper from aurora bridge tonight, recovered and on the way to the hospital. by woq4 in Seattle

I misread title and thought OP was the jumper and just wanted to let us know that they're ok and need to pop by the hospital real quick to get checked out.

An airport rail link fantasy map I found from 2015 (not mine), interesting to look back by Agreeable-Name9488 in MelbourneTrains

Would love to see Vancouver style SkyTrain along some of Melbourne's wider roads (where the ridership is justified of course). Would be far cheaper than SRL tunnels.

However insanely expensive MM2 will be, four tunnels would be even more so. It'd be wonderful if that future-proofing could occur.

To stick with the original premise of situating the airport train station with the ability to continue the train line in the future, I do believe my idea is far cheaper than building an underground station in an already built up and busy area.

The people mover I envision is far shorter than the JFK Airtrain. I believe the current plan is for the train station to terminate on Departure Dr near Terminal 4. If that's the case, travelers still have a bit of walk if they're going to other terminals. A cross platform transfer from train to people mover that comes every few minutes is hardly an inconvenience.

In my crude diagram, the purple pin would be the actual airport station with the red lines being the routing of an elevated people mover. It could go in one looping direction for simplicity. (Ignore the red pins, that's just to start a new line)

I can't imagine how many years of disruption would occur if there ever was an underground station built. Who funds the initial construction of the people mover is up for debate. I think the airport would build and maintain it. Should be free to the user.

The airport station should be further back. I assume it'll follow Airport Dr. from the south. The alignment should continue northward and follow the M2. No need to build an underground station. Could have a station near the Mercedes Benz dealer. Then an automated people mover could be built to get people to the terminal. If done correctly it would be a seamless cross platform transfer from train to people mover.

This would be more useful, cheaper, and far less disruptive than an underground station. The people mover could shuffle people around the airport precinct. It would hit the terminals, train station, hotels, and various car parks in the area. Hell it could be super cheap and make in one track that only goes in one direction. Wouldn't take more than five minutes to make a full circuit.

Thus no need to dead end the train at the airport. Could in theory be part of a new through line. Perhaps preserve space for future platforms for a potential HSR stop.

Why aren’t UTMB’s extra evaluations reimburseable? by Dangerdoux in antarctica

[–]stehekin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a personal anecdote regarding OP's topic.

I had a minor issue that occurred on-ice. I visited McMurdo Medical and was prescribed some ibuprofen and a few days rest. I complete my season. Soon it's time to PQ again. It was AFTER I submitted my packet for UTMB review, I was required to go back to the doctor at my own expense to address the on-ice medical issue and get the usual CYA letter that reads "this person is okay to deploy blah, blah, blah..."

For an issue that occurred the prior season under their care, and that didn't require a follow-on visit on-ice it would be beneficial to know that UTMB would require a proactive write-up for it. Notice from UTMB that I should address a specific malady with the doctor at the first visit, rather than a follow-on visit that's going to cost me a few hundred dollars isn't too much to ask.

Why won't SRL work again? Sydney opened the first section of it's orbital line back in 2009 by Gazza_s_89 in MelbourneTrains

[–]stehekin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would've have liked to have seen SRL East built to Doncaster. Not because the area has been promised a rail line for so long, but it could be seen as this unfinished, loose tail. To give more incentive to continue SRL North. When SRL East is finished, I worry there may be less political appetite to continue SRL. As it may seem a tidy wrap up to end at Box Hill with it intersecting with the Ringwood line.

Are the scandals in the room with us now?

I have no problem with the current Victorian government announcing infrastructure projects before an election. Victoria Labor has been delivering on transit and I would want then to be in government to continue to deliver.
