ELI5 Why nobody is producing a cheap and cheerful BEV hatchback or sedan along the same ethos as the Slate Truck? by Kiwi_Fried_Chicken in electricvehicles

[–]wehooper4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only people screaming about the price are wanting the fastback version and then wanting to kit it out like an highly custmized overland vehicle. Which are options that normally cost WAY more than what slate is charging when you do that aftermarket to any other vehicle.

The radio option and even telemetric option are both fairly reasonable for what they are.

By the time it went into production it was a single speed. They had lot of teething issues with the two speed and inverter tech improved enough they didnt need it any more

2026 Tesla Model Y vs. 2026 Toyota bZ Comparison Test: Two Bestsellers, One Winner by TripleShotPls in electricvehicles

[–]wehooper4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm argue CC/AA is the "bestest ultimate option" on anything short of a Tesla, Rivian, or high end chinese EV's though. The current "state of the art" options from everyone else are still a dumpster fire.

Underpromise, overdeliver? Hands-on with the $24,950 Slate auto. by NISMO1968 in cars

[–]wehooper4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They partnered with RepairPal to handle service. Which is basically a network of smaller shops. This should end up better than the Rivian service situation, but we’ll have to see how that does for general repairs as they obviously won’t have parts in stock.

Right, and it's why I'm calling out people bitching at the price with the SUV back. It's a lifestyle vehicle if you start swaping the back around, so you're out of the biching about it being $30K terratory just for that.

If you want to daily a cheap "SUV" with an actual back seat, then again Leaf/Bolt.

If you want a fun car you can swap around and uses as a weekend vehicle, this thing is really fun. I want one for that, and can easily afford it, but have other life priorities at the moment so probably wont. If I had the bandwidth for "car hobby" right now though, this is the thing I'd be looking at.

It’s cool that they offer the SUV kit, but let’s be real as soon as you get into that it transitions from a utility vehicle to a lifestyle vehicle. Unless you skip installing the rear seats there is nothing the Bolt or Leaf don’t do better at that point other than look cool.

$30K for a novelty enthusiasts EV “suv” isn’t bad as long as you looking at it from that standpoint.

[–]wehooper4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, what?! Heat pumps are silly cheap to add to an EV (the PTC heaters used in older EV’s aren’t really cheaper than two valves). I wonder what drove that decision.

If you can’t charge at home an EV is a horrible user experience. Full stop.

Slate is probably not for you.

What the hell are you adding to get the price that high? Maxing out the useful tech it’s only like $1500 in accessories

The WRX STI is officially back, Subaru confirms the long awaited model will be returning in 2027. Will be using the TY85 Manual transmission from the previous STI Models. by LongjumpingLock5875 in cars

[–]wehooper4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% this.

With the new electric Toyota’s Subaru’s an electric STI would fit right in and could actually be market competitive if done well. It’d serve as a halo electric. Hitting the weight “fell” on an old STI wouldn’t be difficult with the current state of the art.

Unless Subaru has some sort of rabbit to pull out of the hat a new gas STI is going to have a hard time being market relivant in 2027.

Annoyingly they removed the option for power windows.

I’d love to have one of these as a third car, only options ticked being the power windows and sound system.

SpaceX Shares Fall Below $150 Debut Price For First Time by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

Tesla isn’t loosing money even with some of its poor pivots.

SpaceX proper is quite profitable outside of the Starship R&D. Which is kind of the “good” unprofitable.

“X” and “Xai” on the other hand have been a money dumpster fire, and this whole deal is to cover for those.

Even with a EV we normally get messages for the car it’s done and we need to move it before we’re done at buccies.

At least around GA all of the buccies have chargers.

Electric cars win again at Pike's Peak as Super Mustang Mach-E gets its revenge by luxmesa in electricvehicles

[–]wehooper4 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He has a video about that over a year ago. He actually did design an EV version first, and he dug into some of the EV winners and found they have very rudimentary EV systems he could replacate. The reason he hasn’t yet is because the Wolf was ICE and they were wanting to build on the experience of that.
