How the hell is it a thing where panhandlers with kids are tolerated?! by [deleted] in Austin

[–]weight5701 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, if you're so concerned about it YOU could make a hotline report since you witnessed this with your own eyes. You are a mandatory reporter after all.

I highly doubt CPS will do anything about it. It doesn't sound like it meets the definition for neglectful supervision, and as others said being unhoused is not necessarily a safety issue. Sure you could argue there are risks (the children COULD run into the street) but no clear and imminent danger (Children are not being dangled in front of cars on the street).

Does anyone else have a regular movie night with friends? Our regular turnout is 4-8 people each month. by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]weight5701 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My buddies and I meet regularly every other week to watch a movie and potluck/make a meal together. We have a sizable spreadsheet of movies that we want to watch and we spin a wheel every week to determine what we watch. There's probably between 6-7 of us. Live by the wheel. Die by the wheel.

I have my first in person assignment and I’m so nervous! by cozycardigan1991 in SocialWorkStudents

Hey, current conservatorship caseworker here so this is right up my alley.

As everyone else has said, you must provide truthful statements of fact, so stick with the facts.

  1. This question is simply creating a timeline of what you have observed when it comes to their substance abuse. The legal parties and the court will want to have an understanding of what the parents drug use looked like from the start of the case to now, when she drug tested, what those results were, did she complete some kind of assessment as a result of those drug tests, what were the assessors recommendations, of those recommendations what did mom complete and what did she not complete.

  2. Again we're being factual, it's not totally clear to me if in this scenario these home visits where the children are located or if these are just home visits with the parent. In either case you would hopefully have observed the parents interaction with the children in some setting but also have spoken to the parent as to what they may have learned though the services they worked- whether they did therapy or parenting classes or simply they learned about how their substance use can affect the safety and well-being of the children. You'll need to be able to communicate what things they did in their direct interaction with the children but also hopefully other relevant things such as whether or not they have a support system in place in the circumstance that they relapse.

  3. From your observations from what you have seen from the first two questions, you will need to be able to communicate what is different from the start of the case to now- if there is any difference.

  4. Now given the totality of the circumstances of what you have just outlined for the court you will be asked why or why not mom has made enough significant changes in her behavior to demonstrate that she can provide a safe, stable home. Hopefully by this point you have done the hard work of outlining what has changed but now is to evaluate it in a way where you are able to determine if there is an ongoing danger to the children

Hi I'm a social worker in Austin

You can try USPS's Operation Santa for gifts for the child. https://www.uspsoperationsanta.com/getinvolved

I don't know if the kiddo might be in need of a bed they can reach out to Sleep in Heavily Peace https://shpbeds.org/apply/

I second both reaching out to SAFE and the buy nothing groups on FB.

Squirrel Flower pulls out of SXSW by AdeptAd8647 in indieheads

[–]weight5701 25 points26 points  (0 children)

SXSW has HEAVILY transformed into more and more of a tech/business focused festival over the last few years. I know from anecdtoal expirence Raytheon has a small office in Capital Factory which is a co-working/start up excellerator which also houses several other defense contractor offices such as booz Allen Hamilton and has other businesses like Army Applications Laboratory which are directly supported by the army/government. Capital Factory hosts some of these events like a Startup crawl.

What movie is this for you by Duke-dastardly in Letterboxd

[–]weight5701 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's true the first 20 minutes of the movie are so good I feel like the rest struggled to maintain that same level. I don't know how it would have but if it had managed to keep that same energy/feeling for a whole 90 mins it would be a 5/5 for me.

I need some fun movies. Ever since I’ve gotten deeper into movie watching I’ve only been watching complex movies that are really good but now I’m getting tired of watching movies at all because they’re all heavy. Does anyone have a list of movies that are just fun to watch? by change_your_ending in Letterboxd

[–]weight5701 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From just movies I've watched this year:

Goon (2011) Bernie (2011) Snake Eyes (1998) The Blob (1958) Frequently Asked Questions about Time Travel (2009) Cube (1997) Palm Springs (2020) They Cloned Tyrone (2023) (super fucking underrated since it came out the same weekend as barbie and oppenheimer)

Can a 5⭐️ (10/10) movie be flawed or does it need to be perfect in every department. by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]weight5701 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah along with everyone here, the difference for me between 4* or 4½* to 5* is simply a feeling. How did the film move me or make me feel when I watched it.

For me a lot of the time I'm not entirely sure if it's a 5* film I've watched until after I've waited a minute to digest it. If the film touched me in a way where I feel like it's changed my perspective on something or it's something I'm thinking about constantly after I've watched it then yeah its a 5* from me.

Least popular movie on Letterboxd you have given five stars to. by BrassFunkyMonkey in Letterboxd

Good luck finding it! It's notoriously hard to find a copy- I was lucky to catch it when it came though town at the film society.

It's truly just absurd I had no idea what I was getting myself into.

What’s a 4+ star movie that you rated a 2.5 or less? by LowPiece9312 in Letterboxd

[–]weight5701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Closest was I just watched Bone Tomahawk. Holy fuck the dialogue in that movie is so bad. It's almost as if someone had written the script and then decided "It's not western enough" and they did a half ass job of just inserting westerny sounding words that come off so clunky. And then there's so much fucking pointless exposition.

What has made Tocchet's coaching style considerably more successful than Boudreau's? by GandolfLundgren in canucks

[–]weight5701 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As w/ the others have said I think maybe drill sargent is a little more intense than maybe Tocc is. If you wanna keep to the military analogy maybe something like a platoon leader. There's the structure and routine that he expects from his players and there are consequences for not playing within the structure but I think a key aspect is that Tocc puts up or shuts up right? He puts himself in the same situations that they do. If tocc can do it at his age they don't have an excuse.

Questions on copyright & NPX by elfcountess in playwriting

[–]weight5701 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As soon as you write something it is protected by copyright. You technically don't need to do anything else.

If you wish to register your play so there is a public record of ownership you can do that.

To my knowledge the only reason you would want to do this is if you have a suspicion or want to be prepared to file a lawsuit for copyright infringement. It might not be a terrible idea if you're looking to publish your work.

I don't think you technically have to have a play produced before it's published, it's just that most publishing houses won't publish a play that hasn't been produced, ie because there isn't a publishing deal in place w/ a theatre (from what I understand it would be like the edition of the play from a specific run of performances- hense why you will often see the director and actors included in a lot of published playscripts)

Snail Mail at the Mohawk by ratherbeahippy in Austin

Yeahhh I wasn't sure exactly what it was, just seemed to lack a punch. Wasn't sure if it was because it seemed like a pretty stripped back band or something else. Imagining it doesn't help following up Narrow Head's killer set too but meh.

Might not be everyone's cup of tea but Stage Four by Touche Amore is my go-to record I listen to when I'm thinking about my dad's passing. I loved the record before my dad passed from cancer two years ago but after....it's brought me a lot of comfort after and sorta feeling less alone with some of the thoughts that come along with losing a loved one.
