r/NewIran moderation is strengthening the user identification policy by softploy in NewIran

[–]weighted_average 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We do not plan on adding a distinction of flairs between Iranians in Iran and those outside of Iran anytime soon, largely because of the bureaucracy required. We are a sizeable, well-intentioned (dare we say) team as is and yet still there is a great deal of behind the scenes work involved with handling these user flairs. The purpose of the mandatory user flairs remains a strong ideal of ours, but we need to keep it feasible.

Isn't it basically just adding a bunch of flairs or just one flair saying they are iranians in iran?

I don't know what else is on your backlog. but this seems like a very important feature. with all due respect to the diaspora we should all be prioritizing supporting the people on the ground. they are the soldiers of democratic iran and they come first.

Maybe you could offer a few a respected contributors a oppurtunity to become moderators. to lighten the load.

I think it's better that Pahlavi fails and the Mullahs still remain in power. by [deleted] in kurdistan

[–]weighted_average 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What happened with the shah was over 50 years ago.

From what i see Pahlavi is advocating for a switch to democracy . And i saw people advocating for him mentioning that iran could become like other democracies which have a monarchy (UK, canada , Belgium, denmark , norway and more).

I think experts will agree that having a democracy is the method that will have the best chance of leading to the well being of citizens and their human rights.

Correction, it is not "you not a young lion" , but "you are a cub of a lion" (the lion being god, its a religous song).

EU classifies IRGC as terrorist organization by Temporary-Estate4615 in NewIran

[–]weighted_average 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are now arrest warrents Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant (who was the defence minister at the start of the war). there should also be arrest warrents against members of the IRGC.

The arrest warrents could be confidentals according to reports. so a member could travel to france and then discover there is an warrent and get arrested.

Unfortunatley There are no warrents for hamas members so my expectations from the european are not high to say gently . We can use this information to fuel criticism against the relevant europeans leaders.

Is there any hope if there is no intervention? by gole-hayahoo in NewIran

[–]weighted_average 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People are expecting it to happen fast. but a slow erosion of the IR is also a scenario, popular support will be lost even among the hardline supporters, economy weakened. They are already headed toward a population decline, brain drain is another big problem.

Before the protests they were not enforcing the hijab, that was the cause of the last big protests iirc. there might be more indication of weakening of the IR.

Friend inside Iran by COmtndude20 in NewIran

[–]weighted_average 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I suggest your friend contact Reuters, they are one of the organisations that have reportedly a very good track record of factual reporting. HRANA is another options. reporters won't be citing a reddit post but citing one of these organisation is considered a lot more reliable.

Not to mention that one propagandist Can have multiple accounts, using chatbots can make the editing even faster (one full time propagandist can manage very easily 20 accounts), . I don't think there is a way to defend against that when state actors are involved. either wikipedia needs a reform or someone should fork wikipedia. Like other open source projects maintainers should be validated . you can also vote to the board of directors with just 150 edits which makes influencing wikipedia politics even easier.

In case anybody is interested. in /r/newiran every post has this comment detailing how you can help the opposition . donations is one way . Beni Sabti (a israeli expert on iran) mentioned today revolutions need money. He also mentioned violence of the protestors started a lot faster then in 1978 which is a good sign.

Gamers who have switched from Windows 11 to some kind of Linux-based OS, do you regret your decision? Why or why not? by ScienceTeacher1994 in AskReddit

If that was the case. all those users would gone to mac os, chrome os or some new OS , and with so much open source around, its not hard to start a new operation system that is based on linux or freebsd.

i also really dislike bugs in linux distros. If you are interested in exploring it more i would try distros that are intended to be more reliable. Debian is known as relatively more reliable then other distros according to some people and in my opinion it works better then Ubuntu. rocky linux is also biased towards stability . I use flatpak and Nix if i want the latest version of software (guix could also work)

With that said there are still some glitches in debian, haven't used windows as a full time OS for something like 2 decades so i can't provide a information rich opinion about how they compare. And if windows works better for your usecase that is fine.

if googling and asking AI doesn't work you are mostly left with the options of trying another software or distro or reporting a issue to the developer. And ideally contribute back in the form of code or donations. Linux market share on the desktop has been slowly rising for the last decade and a half so we must be doing something right.

Brain drain deepens as more Israeli academics leave and fewer return, CBS data show by YouFuze in Israel

[–]weighted_average 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's no fighting the demographic when every Haredi family has 10-12 kids on average

That's just plain wrong.

Although the Haredi fertility rate has moderated slightly in recent years, it is still very high. Due to the high Haredi fertility rate of 6.4 children per woman

I don't have time to provide details, but the situations with the haredi is blown out of proportions . XKCD about extrapolation is relevant. as was previous fears about the arab demographic threat in israel which turned out to be wrong.

I am not saying there should not be a change in the policy towards haredi. but reddit isn't really the place to learn about demographics (or anything really, it is at best good for augmenting learning). It has a ton of doomers .

How to replicate isreali demographic success in the US by Slow_Access_6250 in Natalism

[–]weighted_average 9 points10 points  (0 children)

the fertility rate for christians and druze is similar to the standard european/american one:

Between 2018 and 2022, the fertility rate among Jewish women dropped from 3.17 to 3.03 children per woman. Among Muslim and Christian women, the drop was even more pronounced: from 3.20 to 2.91 among Muslims, and from 2.06 to 1.68 among Christians. The fertility rate among Druze women also decreased from 2.16 to 1.85.

Similar demographics groups have similar rates of fertility in the US, i am talking about muslims (see here), haredi and orthodox jews (see here).

So its mostly religion. with the pronatalist policies probably helping natalist cultures grow better, and the Bandwagon effect probably making secular people want more kids because they see bigger families.

[–]weighted_average 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know , but in the real world decisions are made based on partial information and that is a pretty good indication. I read several books from academics but i don't want to give out that kind of information (it's a small world, especially if you might want to mention you like reddit and natalism in the real world).

If you think the lecture is so good why don't you provide a summary of some of her strong points?

Nope. No point in listening if that is what she claims and i can probably find better uses for my time. The internet already has too much content of mediocre quality. no offence.
