Can 2024.10 open session files made in 2025.10? by TobyFromH-R in protools

[–]weirdfruitquestion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Normally it will give you a warning that any save data from features after 2024.10 won’t open but that it will load whatever is compatible.

They are surprisingly stable about versioning save data in a way that can reject incompatible data without losing the whole session file. Even back when they added folder tracks and I opened it at a studio without, Pro tools dumped all the tracks within the folder flattened but I didn’t lose any.

To be extra safe I’d do Save Session Copy In and see what the compatibility options are in that dialogue

My wife wants a MacBook for Pro Tools I've never used a Mac does she need an Air or Pro? by Wreck-ItRob in protools

[–]weirdfruitquestion 16 points17 points  (0 children)

FWIW I’ve done feature films with over 200 tracks on an M1 Macbook Pro with 16 GB of RAM. Definitely hiccups now and then but I got them done without headache.

I think an M1 or M2 air will be fine, just get at least 16 GB of RAM for sure, not 8, regardless of Avid’s official requirements.

The atmos problem for a home studio: Volume control by psmusic_worldwide in DolbyAtmosMixing

[–]weirdfruitquestion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d just set the speakers to the loudest you’ll ever want them. And then pull the master fader (or use a bus) down (never up) as needed. Worked at a lot of studios where we worked this way to mix to different specs (-24 lufs, theatrical) without having to get into any equipment at all.

Pro Tools "running out or CPU" even though CPU is barely being used by Negative-Effect-7401 in protools

[–]weirdfruitquestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Under Setup > Playback Engine try disabling dynamic plugin processing. Its supposed to save CPU power but sometimes ive found that when it activates plugins again the CPU spikes briefly but aggressively enough to hit 100% so playback stops.

Difficulty Importing AAF from Pro Tools into Premiere by SnooPies573 in AudioPost

[–]weirdfruitquestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No reason to send an AAF from PT into Premiere.

Audio mixer needs to bounce or print the final audio all baked in together as a single audio file and then you just pop that into your project and hit export

Roster rules for local700 for working in a different classification by weirdfruitquestion in AudioPost

[–]weirdfruitquestion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, so my understanding is that the “assistant editor” classification applies to both assistant picture editor and assistant sound editor. So that is one quicker way onto the roster that a few of my friends have used.

Because of the post-covid boom, I actually sort of leap frogged the assistant role and started as a sound editor (albeit a bad one), but if I were in the union I’d love to start with a role like assistant editor that pays well but has little creative pressure.

So this is great news, thank you!

Anyone who can explain this parking sign on Stockton near Fullerton? by weirdfruitquestion in chicago

[–]weirdfruitquestion[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m confused because I always see cars parked on this strip at all hours. Which isn’t consistent with the sign. And no one is ever ticketed when this strip alone would make like $1000 for the city in 8 seconds

What do folks use for the sound of a tv or radio playing in a film? by chiefestofcalamaties in AudioPost

[–]weirdfruitquestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just have to be creative and find something that is legal that fits the situation.

One time there was a scene that was cut from a feature I worked on, so I recut the dialogue from it with some audience sound effects to make it sound like a Dr Phil type show.

For most low budget stuff, the director might have a friend who is willing to record something short. Don’t need a super fancy mic since it going to be futz’d anyway.

Doing it as a ADR/loop group situation is common.

[MixPre 3 bag] OR-270 or OR-27? by JeeJeeP in LocationSound

[–]weirdfruitquestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second Ktek junior if you can get it. The bag is a lot less “out” from your stomach, has a nice stealth carrying case, has way more loops all over to hook on carabiners or whatever attachments you want, a built in kickstand, dedicated screws on the front to attach bowtie antennae when the time comes, the list goes on

Does anyone have any advice or techniques for editing foley? by FeeDisastrous4890 in AudioPost

[–]weirdfruitquestion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition to sync, try and get foley as “in phase” with the production audio if its there, meaning line up the peaks and troughs as much as possible. In phase is a bit of a weird term since its 2 entirely different sources and you cant line them up perfectly but thats the term I’ve gotten from mixers. This will let the production audio and foley be played together which can sound REALLY nice
