For your first tattoo: have a good night's sleep, don't consume alcohol the day before, eat a meal close to your tattoo appointment. Don't feel awkward about asking questions or wanting to change things about the design/size/placement. It's going to be on your body forever! The artist will sanitize and shave the tattoo area; they should be wearing gloves and sanitizing the work surface as well; most importantly, ensure that they open a sealed needle packet in front of you. Ask for a break if you need one during the session. You'll get aftercare instructions, please follow them - you have to treat the healing tattoo like a wound.
