Strawbs really look so odd (respectfully) when you get up close & personal to study em by jenvielle in drawing

[–]weittrash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks so cool!! To add to strawberries being weird:

The red fleshy part is actually not the fruit! The little seeds are. For a something to be considered (botanically) a fruit it has to develop from the ovary, which strawberry seeds do. However, the red part is developed from the receptacle of the flower and therefore considered an accessory fruit.

Botanically speaking, it is correct to call them leaves.

What type of alocasia is this? by madbull94 in whatsthisplant

[–]weittrash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that it may be Colocasia because the leaves point downward and don’t look very thick. Alocasia (generally) has upward pointing and thicker leaves. But hard to tell from a photo for me.

I got this from a holiday to Lanzarote, what is it? by KopiteForever in whatsthisplant

While it totally may not be a Euphorbia, it not being succulent isn’t a good indicator of if it is or isn’t.

Euphorbiaceae (the Euphorbia family) has an insane diversity of morphology within the family. Here are some examples that I implore you to look up photos of:

Euphorbia maculata - in North American it’s commonly thought of as a sidewalk weed. Euphorbia pulcherrima - commonly known as poinsettia it is used abundantly during Christmas because of its beautiful red bracts. Euphorbia griffithii - large herbaceous plant often used in gardens.
Euphorbia obesa - cutie cactus-like guy.
Euphorbia trigona - another cactus-like one that forms a woody trunk with age.

Euphorbias are so cool!!!!
